black rock: Best Shoreline Towns in Connecticut for Commute to Manhattan or NYC - 12/24/18 10:05 AM
Best Towns for Train Commute to NYC from Connecticut The shoreline towns in Connecticut closest to the New York border offer the shortest commuting times to New York City, whether by car or train. Most commuters prefer to use the train rather than drive into the city, but I have done both over the years. I've commuted from New Canaan, Norwalk, Westport, Fairfield, and the Black Rock section of Bridgeport. When I was completing my Ph.D. at Columbia University, I drove my car, but when I began working in mid-town, commuting by train was easier and more productive (thanks to laptop computers). If you … (0 comments)

black rock: Escape from Manhattan to Black Rock - Waterfront Community One Hour Away - 05/05/12 03:32 AM
Over the past two decades, Black Rock has been attracting artists, academics, young professionals, and Manhattan city dwellers who yearn to live in a waterfront community on Long Island Sound, but don’t want a suburban environment. This Fairfield County community has been the focus of two articles by the New York Times over the past few years, “Living in Black Rock, Connecticut: A Community with Spirit and an Edge” (August 8, 2004) and “If You’re Thinking of Living In St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea, Connecticut: At Peninsula’s End, a Waterside Enclave” (June 9, 2002).  It is a community of creative people with passionate and … (9 comments)

black rock: Ash Creek Tidal Estuary - Undiscovered Treasure in Black Rock CT - 01/28/12 03:04 AM
Most estuaries have been developed, especially in urban areas across the United States as waterfront property is valuable. There are very few remaining tidal estuaries in urban areas, so Ash Creek's importance needs to be understood in order that we preserve and protect it for ourselves and future generations.
Did you know that over 250 different species of migratory shorebirds have been sighted in Fairfield, Connecticut according to Milan Bull, Senior Scientist at Connecticut Audubon? The Ash Creek tidal estuary borders Fairfield and Bridgeport. It is an important stopover area for migratory shorebirds, some of whom travel from as far away as … (0 comments)

The State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (State EOC) issued a report at noon today which states that Bridgeport is a mandatory evacuation area.  I don't know what this means.  I can't find any information on the City website to see what areas are being evacuated or on the City's Facebook page or Twitter.  The next State EOC report is at 4 PM. Click on the link above to go to the State EOC site.

black rock: Hurricane Irene Alert for Black Rock - Threat of Storm Surge at High Tide - 08/26/11 02:38 PM
The town of Fairfield is requiring residents in the Fairfield Beach area to evacuate their homes tomorrow (Saturday) by 4 PM. No mandatory evacuations are planned for Black Rock at this time, however, please remember that we did have last minute evacuations during Hurricane Gloria. I was one of the people who evacuated and it wasn't easy as there were live power lines down and trees in the road as I tried to leave. If you are planning to leave, it would be best to do it during the day tomorrow rather than waiting until the storm arrives.
While much damage … (7 comments)

black rock: Hurricane Irene Headed for Fairfield County Connecticut - 08/25/11 04:08 PM
Irene is headed up the East Coast and in many models dead centered on Bridgeport, so take this one seriously.  Dust off your battery-powered radio and consider investing in a NOAA weather radio (battery operated).  If the storm is bad we WILL lose power in Black Rock.  This image is from and is one of the best sites to track the projected path of the hurricane.  Governor Malloy has urged Connecticut residents to take three simple preparedness steps: get a kit, make a plan, and stay informed,” said Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Commissioner Reuben F. Bradford.”We cannot become … (5 comments)

black rock: Pro HDR iPhone App - 08/17/11 02:20 PM
I purchased the Pro HDR iPhone app for my iPhone 4 (cost $1.99) as it was mentioned by other agents on other sites as being one of their favorite apps.  The iPhone 4 already has a built in HDR app, so I thought I would provide a comparison of a normal photo, an HDR photo using the built-in HDR app, and a Pro HDR photo.  I took a photo tonight while I was on my evening walk and the sun was just starting to go down.  I tried to keep the phone in the same position, but I did have to move … (16 comments)
