houses: Wide Angle - 02/02/08 02:15 AM
Would you all consider the top picture to be acceptable for the MLS?  I am trying to the show entire rooms but don't have the equipment I need.  The stiching software bends the walls a bit but the pictures are small.  I only do listings once in a while and don't have money for a professional.  This is a series of 6 pictures stitched together.  The bottom picture is what I would get at 28mm.

houses: Energy Leaks - 02/02/08 01:10 AM
I have insulated, installed new windows and doors and still my home leaks energy.  I was in my bedroom the other day standing by an outdoor corner and my feet were cold.  I moved over two feet and they warmed up.  Somehow I have an air leak in that corner.  Its the same place they found termites so I wonder if they have something to do with it.  I am considering having an energy audit done on my home.  I know it will find places that need work.  My fireplace is shut up because its like an open window.  I am … (0 comments)

houses: No Smoking Gains Support - 02/01/08 11:04 AM
Gov. Kaine has called for a statewide ban on smoking in restaurants and bars.  Kaine was recently at the Hot Una Bar & Grill when he made the announcement.  The Hot Tuna is already a smoke-free restaurant.  There is sure to be lively debate on this subject seeing on how Virginia kind of grew up on tobacco.  Several cities including Virginia Beach have asked the legislature to let them ban smoking in restaurant and bars.  Stay tuned.

houses: Fairmont Park - 02/01/08 10:39 AM
Fairmont Park was established around 1904 and the lots started at $92.00.  As a place for homes it didn't really take off for twenty years.  Then it was found by World War 1 vets and off it went.  The streets were named for famed battles such as Verdun, Marne, Bapaume, the bloddy Somme and the infamos Vimy Ridge.  The leaders are also acknowledge with streets such as Pershing and Kitchener.  Next time you take a trip through Norfolk, take a trip through Fairmont Park and remember the fallen heros.

houses: Waterfront Development To Be Guided - 01/30/08 11:53 AM
The Planning Commission is is trying to make sure the waterfront is a community gathering place and not for inappropriate development.  You could get an upscale haircut but not a tan.  You may buy sweets from a bakery, art from a gallery but not get your shoes repaired.  Those adult magazines, forget it.  The city council needs to look at the changes and approve them.

houses: Local Man Wants To Move - 01/30/08 11:40 AM
Justin Nelson and his wife want to move but so far he can't.  It seems he received his property from his father by way of a family transfer.  Suffolk is the only local city that allows local transfers and one of the stipulations is that you can't sell the property for ten years.  Mr. Nelson received a job transfer to Roanoke and is asking the city council to approve the sale of his home in Suffolk.  It should be interesting to see how it comes out.

houses: $2.9 Million Bridge to Towne Center - 01/30/08 11:29 AM
Who would have thought that a simple foot bridge over one street could cost $2.9 million.  For that cost, the city will be able to boast a brand new foot bridge from Pembroke Mall to Towne Center.  Keep in mind this will be a bridge with a grand visual impression.  It will also help pedestrians negotiate the ten lanes of traffic and for that it would probably be worth the cost.  One person has died already trying to get across to Towne Center.

houses: Eyes Don't Lie - 01/30/08 11:19 AM
I just heard recently that the Norfolk City Jail will scan the iris of inmates eyes when they are incarcerated.  The new equipment will cost about $30,000 and should be ready in March.  The equipment takes a black and white picture of the iris.  When the inmate is being released, the pictures are matched up.  I always thought that is what finger prints are for but apparently the computers or no computers don't talk to each other.  Well, whatever it takes to keep the correct inmate in jail, I'm for.

houses: Village Schools Survive - 01/23/08 11:46 AM
Two schools scheduled to merge have been spared. Suffolk has been grappling for a long time whether to merge Southwestern Elementary and Robertson Elementary but have finally decided to let the two schools stand. The class sizes are small, both are fully accredited and the parents don't want the village feel of the schools to go away. There would have been a great savings every year by having one school but the parents have won out. Southwestern will get a $21. 9 millon renovation and Robertson will get a facelift and expansion expected to cost $10.8 million.

houses: New Skate Park Proposed - 01/23/08 10:53 AM
The state last year restricted cities from condemning blighted properties just because they are blighted.  With that in mind, the city is looking into condeming some properties in the Wards Corner area of the city.  In its place would be a skate park.  That would be for a public recreational facility and is allowed under the new state rules.  The city is looking hard at several sites but there are problems with most of them.  The Wards Corner option would solve several problems at one time.

houses: Boat Tax Floating Away - 01/23/08 10:40 AM
The dreaded boat tax may be going away.  It has not raised any money and may actually be costing the city money to collect.  Many boats have left for cities with lower taxes causing marinas and resturants around the city gasping for customers.  If its broke, fix it.

houses: Oceana Safe? - 01/23/08 10:33 AM
The city council took steps to BRAC proof Oceana (Base Realignment and Closure Commission).  Will they work?  No one knows for sure but the city hopes the steps are enough to keep the city's largest employer around for a while longer.  The ordinances are designed to go further then what BRAC had recommended back in 2005.  Basically the city is taking the 65-70 decibel zone and dividing it into 3 sections.  The density of homes allowed gets lighter as it goes towards Chesapeake.  Some landowners feel the city is being unfair to them because they can't build with the same density as the what others can in the same … (0 comments)

houses: Pigs Can Fly - 01/23/08 07:35 AM
Gov. Kaine bet Kansas Gov. Sebelius that his Hokies could beat the Jayhawks in the Orange Bowl.  Unfortunately, the Hokies got a little sidetracked and the Jayhawks won.  Now Gov. Kaine is flying a Virginia Ham to the governor from Kansas.  He is sending a 16lb Virginia Finest product.  I think the governor from Kansas is twice a winner.  Once for the game and once for having the finest ham in the country to eat.

Tommy Smigiel of Norview High fame is in the running for Teacher Of The Year.  If he wins he would be the first teacher from Hampton Roads to receive the award.  The contest is sponsored by the Council of Chief State  School Officers and the ING foundation.  Smigiel is in only his eighth year of teaching and is teaching at his alma mater.  Let us pray for his continued success in his drive for teacher of the year.

houses: Wisconsin Still A Winner - 01/20/08 07:30 AM
The Wisconsin may be mothballed but she still brings her big guns to the party.  She is berthed next to Nauticus which is Norfolks' idea of a Naval Museum.  The last figure for visitors to the battleship was 1.8 million and should top 2 million by April.  Please come out and keep these two wonderful places afloat.

houses: Norfolk History To Be Saved? - 12/09/07 06:06 AM
Not if council members have their way.  Three historic buildings in downtown Norfolk will be razed for a new hotel and convention center.  Preservationists are mounting a petition drive to force the city to delay the demolition.  This is a last resort effort.  The signs are up and demolition of this real estate is imminent.  The council does not want to stop the destruction of the three buildings.  On a side note, Norfolk's downtown area was named in May as one of the Most Endangered Historic Sites in Virginia by the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities/Preservation .  Now we now way. … (1 comments)

houses: Virginia Beach Real Estate Developer Reduces Footprint - 12/04/07 02:57 AM
Indigo Dunes just won't go away.  It's a shame city council wouldn't buy this wonderful property but it is what it is.  The developer has reduced the wetlands damage from 3.91 acres to 2.35 which is nothing to sneeze at.  There are still a lot of hurdles to overcome but L.M. Sandler & Sons maybe on the right track.

houses: Virginia Beach Donates Tissue - 11/28/07 10:43 AM
Imagine 1.7 million tissue grafts since 1982.  That's how many grafts LifeNet has provided and with new headquarters off of Concert Dr there should be plenty more.  I was amazed at the amount of work and time it takes to get tissue to the correct people.  A heart valve can take 60 days waiting before it can be cleared for processing.  Then it has to be processed, rechecked and delivered-at a temperature of -385 degrees Fahrenheit.  My hats off to this dedicated group of people.    … (0 comments)
