new homes: Eagles Back Together - 03/27/08 12:21 PM
The eagles are finally back together at Norfolk Botanical Garden.  For a while an interloper had bewitched the couple and at least one egg was lost.  Now it looks the the couple that has been together for a few years are back at and have at least one egg in the nest.  Here is something even cooler, click on this EAGLE and be taken to the eagle cam where you can watch the babies grow up.  Of course you have to watch the time of day you are there.  I just went there and it was of course dark.  Silly me.

new homes: Nice Place or Not So Nice - 03/26/08 12:40 PM
I was passing a few condo places in Virginia Beach the other day and said man those entrances really look nice.  Just a few feet over was some stuff that looked not quite so nice.  Why do these places spend so much money keeping the entrances nice and then muck them up?  I am going to start a series of posts that show some of these condo places.   Please feel free to add pictures of the nice and not so nice in the same place.  Try to limit the "not so nice to maybe 50" away but closer would help.

new homes: EyeClops Night Vision - 03/25/08 12:55 PM

I have figured out how to extend our working hours into the night and here it is.  Night Vision Goggles for the masses.  Once the technology that allowed our fighting men and women to take it to the enemy in the dead of night has become the latest weapon of the modern real estate agent.  Now we no longer can tell our buyers that it is too late at night to show houses because we can now see at night.
They are actually called EyeClops Night Vision and you can buy them in the fall for around $80 bucks a piece.  How cool is … (1 comments)

new homes: More Hospital Beds For Virginia Beach - 03/23/08 02:06 AM
Virginia Beach will have a new hospital in the Princess Anne Anne outpatient center.  The hospital is scheduled to open in 2011 and will have 120 beds.  The beds will be transferred from the Sentara Bayside hospital and that facility will be outpatient only.  I don't think the Bayside people will be too happy about that.  The Princess Anne Outpatient Center already has a free standing emergency room and sees more than 150 patients a day.

new homes: Once In A Blue Moon Part Three - 03/23/08 01:15 AM
This picture of the moon over the Atlantic Ocean was taken next to my office by the Oceans Condominium which is next to Oceans II Condominiums in Virginia Beach.  I thinks this would be a great shot to include in the MLS pictures in addition to the water views to show what other kinds of views you get from your condo.  Normally you would see pictures of the jets from Oceana Naval Air Base but it was quiet when the pictures was taken.

new homes: Birds Of Prey - 03/22/08 08:20 AM
I saw these birds circling my home the other day.  Behind me is the Honey Bee golf course.  I didn't know if they were hunting the golfers or the fish in the canal but there were a bunch.  I couldn't identify them as they were two far away.
The second picture shows the power of zoom on my Panasonic DMZ 18.  That is 27 x normal.

new homes: Reverse 911 - 03/22/08 05:05 AM
Virginia Beach recently used its reverse 911 to call nearly 17,000 calls after a fatal shooting at a apartment complex recently.  Police say they used the system to warn people to stay in their homes .  The system was used three times that day, two calls were made to tell people to stay indoors and one call was made to say all was clear.  The system was put in place in 2003 and is called VBalert.

new homes: Eviction = Shooting - 03/22/08 04:59 AM
As a reminder of how dangerous things can be, two maintenance workers at Virginia Beach Apartment complex were shot dead and three more were wounded.  The details are still murky but it was supposed to be a pre-move inspection prior to the tenant being evicted.  The tenant opened the door naked and workers asked him to get dressed and they would be back in an hour.  When they came back, the man opened the door with two different weapons and opened fire.  He shot two workers dead and left three wounded before he went inside and shot himself dead.

new homes: Church Skate Park Part Two - 03/20/08 10:06 AM
A while back I wrote about the Greenbrier Church on Volvo Pkwy and their unauthorized skate park.  It seems they sunk $20,000 into a skate park but didn't think they needed a permit.  They did and they got one.  The Chesapeake City Park is close by but the churches will be much smaller and shouldn't take business away from the church.

new homes: Strawberries Are Here Already - 03/20/08 09:59 AM
As if Virginia Beach isn't a nice enough place to live the strawberries have reared their beautiful red heads.  If you go now you can have local strawberries for Easter.  What a treat.  The strawberries are raised in rows under a cover and are ripening early.  You can call the Henleys at 757-426-6869 to make sure they have some on hand.  While you are at it, check at John Wilson at New Earth Farm off London Bridge Rd.  He is selling some 30 varieties of organic vegetables seeds as well as organic compost.  The place is open Sat from 1-4.

new homes: New Tool For The Internet - 03/19/08 04:07 AM
I found this website downforeveryoneorjustme  and thought I would pass it on.  If you are having problems with a slow Internet or site (like Rain on weekends) you can go there and see if it is the site or your Internet.  Not sure how it works but you put in the site you are concerned about and it will tell you if the site is slow or if it is your computer.

new homes: Fifty Cent For Net - 03/19/08 03:59 AM
HRT is proposing charging .50 cents for riding the Norfolk NET.  Up to this point the ride had been free.  Norfolk officials were caught off guard and want to see the NET stay free.  They need to study the proposal and see if there is any way to keep it that way.  The NET is designed for commuters who park in the outlying lots to get to work easily and also to get around the rest of downtown without a car.

new homes: $30,000 For A Smidge - 03/19/08 03:39 AM
Virginia Beach will spend $30,00 for a 1/2" extension to the the poll at Princess Anne recreation center.  The change is being made due to a controversy dating back to 2003.  Ten national records were set at a meet and 28 swimmers qualified as All American's.  This caused some eyebrows to be raised and the pool was measured.  It came up a 1/2" short of 25 meters.  The pool was not built to be used for official meets but was pressed into service.  Having the pool up to standards will help relieve some pressure from the Bayside facility.

new homes: Sunk Boats Hard To Get Rid Of - 03/18/08 12:19 PM
Why is it so hard to be rid of sunk or half sunk boats.  I am guessing cost is a big part of it.  If the cities take care of the boat they bear the cost so they go through a lot to see if the owners can be tracked down.  I guess they don't have VIN numbers like cars but they should.  The boats are everywhere and often times a hindrance to good motoring and an environmental hazard.  The Virginia Marine Resources Commission needs money from the legislators to provide grant money to Norfolk for removal of the sunken boats.  … (0 comments)

new homes: How To Name A Road - 03/18/08 12:11 PM
Chesapeake was born in 1963 and because it was mostly county, the roads didn't have a lot of names or they were duplicated.  One of Porter Williamson's jobs was to help with the mess.  There routes, no names and duplicate names.  The city tried to get the residents to come up with names and for the most part they did.  Well on Rte 56 lived but two residents and they couldn't come up with a name and had nothing but bitterness between the two. Porter Williamson, tongue in cheek, suggested Peaceful and the rest is history.

new homes: Once In A Blue Moon - 03/18/08 11:55 AM
I caught this coming from my office the other day.  It was about 5 pm.  The moon is over the Atlantic iOcean n Virginia Beach.  This area has a lot of jets flying over but none today.  What a striking difference in the sky from my sunrise or sunset picture.

new homes: V 705 or V 570 Replacement - 03/16/08 01:33 AM
Panasonic has come out with the FX 35.  It has a 25 mm lens that has virtually no lens distortion and does away with some of the other problems associated with the Kodaks.  Here is a picture of a picture that shows no distortion.  The left picture is a Canon SD 870 with a 28mm lens and the right is the Panasonic with a 25 mm lens.  Notice how bowed the Canon picture frame is compared to the Panasonic.  If you want a wide angle lens and missed out on the Kodak, here is your chance.
Here is a press release.

new homes: Local Market Spared A Bit? - 03/15/08 02:46 AM
According to an ODU study, the local real estate market here was spared some of the harshness in other parts of the country.  In new homes, Virginia Beach took a big hit in building permits, down 48.1% from 2006.  Overall for the region it was 31%.  The situation is expected to correct itself some towards the middle of the year as demand catches up.  With so few permits last year there aren't homes for buyers to purchase this year.  We should see the end of discounts or at least a slowing down of them.  Most of the new homes purchased last year … (6 comments)
