norfolk: Another Casuality Of Short Sale/Foreclosures - 11/24/08 10:39 AM
I was reading in our local paper, the Virginian Pilot, that the utility companies are having an unexpected drop in electricity consumption.  Utilities like Dominion Power are forecasting a 1 to 2 percent increase in power consumption and are setting up to meet that demand.  Remember, the infrastructure can take years to put into place and it has to be forecast ahead of time.  If they are wrong then the companies and ultimately the consumer pays dearly.
For the first time, power companies are seeing up to a 3 percent drop in consumption to homes.  The analysts are at a loss … (0 comments)

norfolk: New Babies Every Where - 11/12/08 10:54 AM
The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk recently had a spate of births.  There was a bongo, an armadillo, two box turtles, four copperhead snakes and a bog turtle.  What it means is that the breeding and conservation program at the zoo is working.  I am looking forward to seeing the little critters.

norfolk: Renovation at Wards Corner Hits Snag - 11/08/08 07:08 AM
Norfolk is working on plans to provide $1 million in grants and loans to help fix up homes in three Wards corner neighborhoods.  The city has pledged the money to Denby Park, Monticello Village and Oakdale Farms but so far has not figured out how to administer the money or when it will be available.  There are over 2100 households in the area but only money enough for about 21 homeowners and 5 landlords.  It should help with real estate assesments when they are done.  The money if and when it comes surely won't be around for long.

norfolk: You're such a smart "buoy - 11/04/08 04:44 AM
NOAA has deployed a big bad "smart buoy" on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk recently.  It is designed to measure all sorts of weather conditions, environmental conditions and water quality.  This is the first buoy in the area but there will be several more deployed.  If you are into that sort of data, go to www.buoybay.org and have a peek.

norfolk: Norfolk Faces Budget Deficit - 11/04/08 04:26 AM
Even without employee raises or new programs the budget for Norfolk is facing a $22 million deficit.  Expenses are rising and revenues are flat according to the City Manager.  Resale home prices have fallen but new home prices have risen.  Couple this with a little bit of rise on the commercial real estate, less state aid and you have the gap.  Hopefully the city will work some magic and not have to raise the real estate taxes.

norfolk: Virginia Symphony Orchestra In The Red - 10/13/08 05:54 AM
Due to slow ticket sales and a dip in dontations, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra begins the season already $1.5 million in debt.  Last year, the Symphony started with no debt, thanks in large part to Norfolk Southern Corp. and this year they are trying hard to raise money but as they are finding out, times are tough.

norfolk: Light Rail Costs In Flux - 10/10/08 12:10 PM
A huge project like the light rail system in Norfolk called the TIDE needs to be transparent.  Apparently Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) doesn't think so.  Council members want numbers and projections and are not getting them.  The city nees to stay on top of this issue as many millions of dollars are at stake.  HRT says it is hard to come up with exact numbers as things are in flux like the station design and parking at the Military Highway sight.  Council needs a handle on the funding and they need it real soon.

norfolk: More condos for Wards Corner - 10/05/08 04:05 AM
Arthur Collins is going to build a 385 unit condominium complex near Wards Corner in Norfolk.  The $60 million project is on Newport Ave and will replace the Riverside Terrace Apartments.  The new development has views of the Elizabeth River and will be called WaterMark.  The condos will be built in phases over a period of years.  This seems to be a pretty bold move in this real estate market and let's hope it works for him.

norfolk: Go Figure - 10/02/08 08:28 AM
A man was arrested for openly carrying a gun to a festival at Waterside last year turned out to be bogus.  Apparently it is ok to walk around Harborfest in Norfolk or anywhere else you want with a six shooter strapped to your side.  The police arrested the man and where none to nice to him as he says.  He sued the department in federal court for the Second and Fourth amendment rights for constitutional violations.  The judge threw all that out.  Here is where the "go figure" comes.  The police asked for the mans social security number.  That is a … (2 comments)

norfolk: It takes legislation to sale land in Norfolk - 09/24/08 07:23 AM
Did you know that at times it takes an act of Congress to sell land.  Apparently NOAA owns a piece of land in downtown Norfolk on Front St that it bought from Norfolk back in the early 1970's.  Norfolk needs the piece of the land for its light rail system and the rest will be towards redevelopment.  Right now there is an empty warehouse on the lot.

norfolk: CM Developement Liable - 09/14/08 04:06 AM
CM Developments' president will be liable for $9.1 miillion in debt.  This was because of an agreement filed in bankruptcy court recently.  Once the bankruptcy case is closed, creditors will be allowed to file claims against Cary McEntee in civil court and place liens against his wages and any remaining property.
The company at one time owned 250 properties in and around the Norfolk area but sold them in a pyrimid like scheme.  Eventually it came crashing down on the company like a house of cards.  Many investors were out a lot of money and the city is left trying to clean … (0 comments)

norfolk: New School Zones For Norfolk - 09/08/08 06:20 AM
Norfolk schools will be getting new attendance zones by 2010 if school officials go through with plans recently announced.  The move could end crosstown busing that was imposed on the city decades ago by the courts.  Because the zones for the five hight schools haven't been redrawn in such a long time some schools are over utlized and some are underutilized.  Rezoning the schools would more evenly distribute the students and should make for shorter bus trips as a bonus.

norfolk: Homeland Security Cameras Are Broke - 08/09/08 09:10 AM
I probably would not have mentioned this but the paper broke the big secret.  A big electrical storm recently hit the Norfolk International Airport.  The security cameras for Homeland Security were damaged and no longer work.  They won't be fixed until next year.  The airports security system still operates and covers a broader area so Homeland Security will use that for a while.   You would think they could use the system all the time but who knows.

norfolk: Norfolk To Feature Two Local Artists - 08/05/08 12:28 PM
The city of Norfolk is looking for design proposals for two Town Point Park outdoor sculpture projects.  One project is an artwork that will act as a fence between Waterside Dr and the park near Nauticus.  The city will give $20,000 to the chosen artist.  The other design is for a water feature, such as a fountain, at the entrance to the park.  The city will pay $60,000 for this design.  Apparently water is worth more here, the same as in real estate.  The city will build and pay for the winning designs.  Visit www.norfolk.gov/purchasing/artwork_rfp.asp for details and an application.

norfolk: Rabid Foxes Everywhere - 07/12/08 12:48 PM
A fox was recently tested for rabies and it was positive.  This is the third fox in just the last month for the city of Norfolk.  The last one was found in the 8500 block of O'Conner Cres.  Several people including an officer have been attacked by the foxes.  If you see one attacking your dogs or running towards you, take off in the other direction as the fox is not looking for attention.

norfolk: Norfolk Has New Assessor - 07/04/08 06:12 AM
Deborah Bunn is THE assessor for Norfolk.  She worked in the assessor's office 22 years as a clerk stenographer.  Now she is running the place.  My how times have changed.  She has a staff of 26, 73,000 properties to assess and a problem.  It seems that while the tax rate for the average homeowner rose 40 percent in the last three years, business rates only went up 4 percent.  One of her jobs is bring balance back to the tax base without getting fired like her good friend, Maria Kattman, did in Suffolk.  So far she has the backing of the … (0 comments)

norfolk: Schools Being Evaluated - 06/28/08 10:50 AM
A citizens panel is helping the Norfolk school board evaluate 55 of its buildings.  They are going to give their opinion on a $597 million plan to renovate the buildings.  The panel was surprised at what they found in some buildings.  Leaky roofs, peeling paint from water seepage and one school that had 40% more students than what it was built for.  Hopefully the committee will have some good input to the board.

norfolk: Road Closures Online - 06/21/08 01:54 PM
If you live or work in downtown Norfolk this information maybe invaluable to you.  Norfolk is expecting a tough two years because of major construction projects valued at over $700 million.  You can go to
www.downtownnorfolk.org and see the road closures online.  The site will show the closures, the reason for the closures and how long they will last.  These delays will affect the 30,000 people who work downtown.  Let's hope the interactive map program will help some of them get around.

norfolk: Transit Reports Spike In Ridership - 06/13/08 12:34 PM
One of the good things happening because of the spike in gas prices is that more people are riding the buses.  In Norfolk, Va that is a good thing because our transit system is rather weak. The ridership is up 32% from a year ago.  Hampton Roads Transit Authority  plans on doing some expanding in late June.  Hopefully the increase will keep going and the system will be more responsive and get better.  One route going from a hub in Virginia Beach to Norfolk Naval Base was up 56%.  For the military folks planning on moving here, the bus system to the base … (1 comments)

norfolk: Light Rail Forging Ahead - 05/24/08 11:56 AM
Another contract was awarded recently for light rail track in Norfolk.  This was for the section going from Harbor Park to the Eastern Virginia Medical Center.  The bid was for $42.4 million which was $15 million more than what is should have been.  Hopefully this isn't a harbinger of things to come as Norfolk as to make up the cost overuns.
