sold: Dog Seizer - 04/19/08 12:30 PM
At least 102 dogs, cats and assorted livestock were recently saved from an illegal kennel.  The owners say they have the proper licenses but the ploice siezed the animals until it can all be sorted out.  The animals lacked a license or vaccinations and were in poor condition.  The kennels were in poor condition also.  Animal control has been to the house before with no problems but apparently things are different now.   We will see how this plays out.

sold: Soap Scum Got You Down? - 02/27/08 12:21 PM
How do I clean the soap scum in the shower?  I have used bleach, nylon pot scrubber, baking soda, dishwasher Magic, X-14 and White Rain Shampoo or any white shampoo will do.  They all work in their own way.  The best way I have found is to do away with soap and use a liquid type soap to wash with.  For some reason that does not leave a film or scum on the shower.

sold: Lakeland High School Band Has A Higher Calling - 02/20/08 04:07 AM
Alvin Wilson II is the director of the band and wants to see it go higher and further.  To that end, the practices are harder and he advocates the band members prepare more strenuously, like running as much as two miles a day.  The new attitude has paid off with nine trophies last fall.  All were first place.  The performances are more of a variety show now then just a single style performance.  Wilson is also touring middle schools' to try and drum up new band members.  There are 75 now and he wants to increase that number to 150.

sold: Public Health Building to Go Downtown - 02/13/08 10:52 AM
In a turn of events, city council is considering moving the proposed Public Health Building from Kings Fork Rd/Pruden Blvd to "The Fairgrounds" in downtown Suffolk.  The building would go on a piece of land that needs compacting because of prior building.  It will add to the expense but will mean the building would be closer to the people who need it.  Lets' hope the council moves forward on this proposal.

sold: Don't You Just Hate It When!!! - 02/07/08 01:57 PM
I just listed a nice home Suffolk, Va.  The house two down from mine was listed the day before.  I went in at $314,900 and the other was at $324,900.  Mine is smaller and not quite as nice but the other one is priced extremely competitively.  The day after I list mine, the other drops his price by $11,000 making mine look overpriced!!!.  Of course my seller can drop his price but he can't ever match the others price.  The difference is my seller bought in 2005 for $275,000 and the other seller bought new in 2002 for $189,000.  I JUST … (3 comments)

sold: Hillpoint Farms - 02/07/08 08:22 AM
If you are into golf, then this is the place to be.
Home buyers looking for custom-built, spacious, upscale homes in a rural setting should be sure to check out Hillpoint Farms in Suffolk.
The community is located adjacent to Nansemond River Golf Club, and has been wonderfully built out by the developer.  The site also is close to the Nansemond River, which can be seen from some of the home's upper floors.
Hillpoint Farms will consist of the neighborhoods of Hillpoint Greens, Lake's Edge, Hillpoint Meadows, Fairways Crossing, The Vistas, and Hillpoint Woods Apartments.  These homes  lining Hillpoint Boulevard make up … (0 comments)

sold: Building Gone But Church Lives On - 02/06/08 11:12 AM
The Zion Baptist Church building was destroyed in a fire recently.  The building had stood since 1894 but other buildings had served the church since 1865.  Blacks had split off from the mother church for many reasons and was the first church owned in Portsmouth by blacks.  The church meets in an auditorium at the Sheriff's Academy at Randolph and Green streets.  The Rev. Thomas T. Shields thinks god doesn't want him to build a church building but to build ministries.

sold: Suffolk's Next City Manager - 02/06/08 08:40 AM
No job application?  Wow that's pretty good but considering that Selena Cuffee-Glen has been with the city since 2005, maybe none was needed.  She won Vice Mayor Curtis Milteer over on a trip to New York.  City officials were trying to get the nations top three bond rating agencies to improve the cities outlook financially.  Cuffee-Glenn played an important role and two of the three agencies responded by withdrawing their "negative outlook".  Most everybody thought of her when Jim Johnson, the current city manager, announced his retirement.  There was talk of looking outside but sometimes it pays to promote from within.

sold: Waterfront Development To Be Guided - 01/30/08 11:53 AM
The Planning Commission is is trying to make sure the waterfront is a community gathering place and not for inappropriate development.  You could get an upscale haircut but not a tan.  You may buy sweets from a bakery, art from a gallery but not get your shoes repaired.  Those adult magazines, forget it.  The city council needs to look at the changes and approve them.

sold: Local Man Wants To Move - 01/30/08 11:40 AM
Justin Nelson and his wife want to move but so far he can't.  It seems he received his property from his father by way of a family transfer.  Suffolk is the only local city that allows local transfers and one of the stipulations is that you can't sell the property for ten years.  Mr. Nelson received a job transfer to Roanoke and is asking the city council to approve the sale of his home in Suffolk.  It should be interesting to see how it comes out.

sold: Village Schools Survive - 01/23/08 11:46 AM
Two schools scheduled to merge have been spared. Suffolk has been grappling for a long time whether to merge Southwestern Elementary and Robertson Elementary but have finally decided to let the two schools stand. The class sizes are small, both are fully accredited and the parents don't want the village feel of the schools to go away. There would have been a great savings every year by having one school but the parents have won out. Southwestern will get a $21. 9 millon renovation and Robertson will get a facelift and expansion expected to cost $10.8 million.

sold: Boat Tax Floating Away - 01/23/08 10:40 AM
The dreaded boat tax may be going away.  It has not raised any money and may actually be costing the city money to collect.  Many boats have left for cities with lower taxes causing marinas and resturants around the city gasping for customers.  If its broke, fix it.

sold: Portsmouth Coalitin Celebrates - 11/27/07 11:00 AM
Local churches and non-profits were spurred to action 25 years ago when in the Reagan ere they saw big budget cuts for the poor.  13 churches and 4 nonprofit agencies joined forces and today the budget is almost $1 million dollars.  The origination is called "Portsmouth Area Resource's Coalition and is holding its 25th annual meeting this Friday. They tried to make sure they did not duplicate services and decided that the poor needed long term housing more then short term aid.  They now have 8 shelters for the homeless and help an estimated 3,200 people a year.  … (0 comments)

sold: Suffolk Goes One Way - 11/24/07 01:38 AM
Starting this week Public Works will begin work to transform part of Pinner Street into a one-way street.  Going northbound from Bank St to Finney Ave will be one way.  This is expected to ease residents concerns about speeding and congestion in the area.  The city will look at the problem in 90 days to see if any additional work needs to be don. … (0 comments)

sold: Suffolk Faces Detour - 11/23/07 01:31 AM
Interstate I664 and the North U.S. 17 exit ramp will be closed for a week.  Why you ask?  Because the train tracks are being moved just a bit.  In fact it is happening in several cities.  The tracks are being moved to the median so that that there aren't as many at grade crossings.  Why now?  Because the new terminal in Portsmouth means more rail traffic.  The detour is expected to last three months.

sold: Portsmouth @ Willet Hall - 10/31/07 01:23 AM
Willet Hall has stood the test of time since 1955 (a good year since I was born that year).  Now that many world class talents have passed through the halls, it may me history.  The 1,924 venue was recently used as Hunt-Mapp Middle School.  The city is looking into spending roughly $6 million dollars to turn it into a free standing venue.  The 1300 seat Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach recently opened at a cost of $47 million dollars.  With a big stage and $41 million dollars in savings it seems like a no brainer to me.  … (0 comments)

sold: Portsmouth Naval Hospital - 10/28/07 06:37 AM
Rear Adm. Matthew Nathan has assumed command of the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.  Nathan has a nack for service as at one of his last commands the facility earned the highest patient satisfaction ratings of any medium sized hospital in the system.  Nathan can't complain of conditions at the hospital because his boss was the previous commander of the hospital.  Although the hospital doesn't treat a lot of the war wounded it is quite busy delivering over 42050 babies last year and having 15,000 patients admitted.  We wish him luck.

sold: Old Skull - 08/16/07 09:51 AM
A human skull found recently by cemetery workers was likely from a person who died a long time ago.  The medcal examiners said ti appears to be old.  The skull was in a plastic grocery bag at the Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens and Chapel Mausoleum when it was found.  Why or where it came from may never be known.  … (1 comments)
