suffolk: Having A Bad Day In Suffolk, Va - 03/31/11 04:00 PM
I was out showing a farm house in Suffolk, Va and just knew as soon as I pulled up that it was going to be a bad day.  I pulled out my Panasonic DMC FZ 100 just to confirm what was on the chimney.  Not sure I wanted to go inside but duty called.

suffolk: Keep Warm With A Pellet Stove In Suffolk - 02/23/10 01:20 PM
I was out showing homes in Suffolk recently and saw a pellet stove.  So I did some research on pellet and corn stoves.  These type stoves are convenient and energy efficient.  Although the materials are similiar they require different combustion air/fuel ratios and ash removal rates.  Most stoves that burn corn can burn pellets but not the other way so make sure you buy a dual fuel stove.
The firepot design in the stoves makes them efficient and clean-burning.  Combustion air is drawn into the firepot and all around the pellets and/or corn.  With the high ratio of surface area to weight of … (1 comments)

suffolk: Cure for Stinky Water In Suffolk - 01/22/10 01:28 AM
Do you have stinky water in Suffolk?  Do you have well water?  What causes the smell and how can the typical homeowner in Suffolk fix it?  Often water pipes are contaminated during construction with soil and the soil is deposited in the bottom of the tank. The soil contains Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB).  The SRB react to the metal rods in the water heater creating hydrogen sufide which is harmless but smelly.  Here are three cures that might help you out.
1.  Replace your current magnesium metal rod in the water heater with an aluminum one.  The rod is used to improve the … (1 comments)

suffolk: Suffolk Rejects School Site - 01/16/10 01:22 PM
Suffolk has rejected a school site for a new elementary school.  The spot was in Holland just off of US 58 near O"Kelly Drive.  The school is supposed to open in 2012 and will replace Robertson and Southwestern elementary schools.  The School Board has another site in mind but hasn't said where it is yet.

suffolk: Rent Prices Rose Slightly In Suffolk - 01/06/10 10:56 AM
Rents prices rose slightly in Suffolk and Hampton Roads last year.  Good news for landlords and not so good for renters.  They were up almost 1.5% from April to Oct and the vacancy rate is down to 6.9%.  That probably will go up after new figures are in for the next quarter.  More houses were bought and taken out of the rental market.  That should drive vacancy rates down and rents up.  More investors are being foreclosed on at the same time.
Planned new construction for apartments dropped dramatically as well from nearly 3,800 to 1,500.  That is a really big fall off … (1 comments)

suffolk: BING The New Way To Search The Internet In Suffolk - 12/24/09 02:54 AM
BING the new way to search the internet in Suffolk.  I just opened the browser on my smartphone and it came up with a new name called BING.  I usually use YAHOO so didn't know what that was all about.  It is a new search engine from Microsoft.  It is just crazy useful depending on the phone you have.  On the Blackberry Curve it turns on the phones microphone so that you can talk to it.  YOU DON"T HAVE TO TYPE, JUST TALK (watch out for big brother).

suffolk: Tidewater Community College in Suffolk - 11/19/09 12:07 AM
Tidewater Community College in Suffolk is sitting on some primo land.  It seems they own that big open area of land you see when you first come out of the Moniter Merrimac tunnel from Hampton.  I am talking not only to the right of the bridge but to the left as well.  There is about 389 acres.  When this is sold to developers it will be a huge financial boon to the college.  Interstate access and waterfront property.  Where else in the area is there anything like this left?  There is a small superfund cleanup site on the land but that … (0 comments)

suffolk: Shotgun Training for Suffolk Citizens - 11/03/09 11:52 PM
There is a new shotgun training center for Suffolk citizens.  Where can you go to learn how to use your new shotgun and make sure it is working great?  You can carry yourself on down to Moyock to the U.S. Training Center.  They teach handgun, shotgun and carbine.  This used to be the Blackwater center but a new name change for Blackwater (Xe) has resulted in a new name and mission for the training center.  They now are training civilians.

suffolk: Suffolk Wins National Award - 11/24/08 11:08 AM
Last August Suffolk held a National Night Out celebration that brought out over 5,000 citizens.  Suffolk's festivities included a duck race, a party and a pep rally at Peanut Park.  The police and firefighters staffed public safety booths.  The national award comes the nonprofit National Association of Town Watch and selected Suffolk from a field of 294 cities.  City leaders should be proud of themselves.

suffolk: CenterPointe To Be Big - 11/04/08 05:03 AM
If it ever gets off the ground, CenterPointe, at the corner of US 58 and Holland will be huge. Over 900 acres, 5 million square feet of warehouse space and 2,700 jobs.  This is a big project and citizens are mostly concerned about US 58.  It is pretty much over used now and that many cars as well as the trucks to feed the warehouse is not something the citizens want.  The developer, the city of Suffolk and the state are not talking about doing anything with the road.

suffolk: Suffolk Settles Lawsuit - 09/14/08 04:26 AM
The ex-Suffolk assessor for Suffolk recently settled a lawsuit with Suffolk  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.  City officials would not comment.  The assessor was fired for recently changing the way homes had been assessed along waterfront property.  There were other issues to be sure but his was the most public display by the assessor.

suffolk: Hog Truck Overturns - 09/14/08 04:18 AM
A hog truck on the way to Smithfield recently overturned in Suffolk at the Intersection Godwin Blvd and Kingsdale Rd.  Several hogs were killed and several more escaped.  The road was closed for six hours.  The Chuckatuck Volunterr Fire Department kept the remaining hogs cool my spraying them with water while they were being transferered to another truck.

suffolk: Great Dismal Swamp Lake Is Open - 09/08/08 07:41 AM
Lake Drummond in Suffolk is open to the public for the first time in a while.  It had been closed because it was being used as a water source for the fire that started June 9, 2008.  At the height of the fire in the Great Dismal Swamp there were oaver 400 firefighters fighting the fire.  For a short time, the fire was the largest wild fire in the US.  Today there are less then 50 firefighters.  The fire will smolder until there is a big soaking rainfall.   Hopefully that will be soon.

suffolk: Missing Text Books Cost Big Money - 07/25/08 12:21 PM
Suffolk school officials are trying to crack down on students who don't turn in text books.  So far the missing text books are worth over $180k and the cost may go higher as more inventory is counted as missing.  Officials are looking at using collection agencies, barring student parking and other measures.  Some books cost as little as $15 and some as much as $120.  Thats a lot of missing books.

suffolk: Skinny Houses in Suffolk? - 06/28/08 10:44 AM
Skinny houses in Suffolk?  How about a 15 foot wide house that is 55 feet deep.  That is what happens when you build homes in older areas and have to abide by code that says you need a ten foot buffer around the property.  I guess you have to build homes somewhere and add to the real estate tax base but these homes are just ugly.  Chesapeake has basically stopped the practice and Suffolk is looking into it.
