virginia beach real estate: Belharbor To Get Extra Year - 01/30/08 11:46 AM
The sagging housing market has snagged another victim.  Belharbour Station at SoNo need an extra year to complete the first part of the project.  They may even need longer if the market doesn't improve soon.  The city is looking at putting $36 million dollars of infrastructure into the project.  The improvements include parks, streets and water mains.  The money will be paid with bonds and backed by the tax money generated from the Belharbour development.  Let us hope the market starts to take off and get this project off the ground.

virginia beach real estate: $2.9 Million Bridge to Towne Center - 01/30/08 11:29 AM
Who would have thought that a simple foot bridge over one street could cost $2.9 million.  For that cost, the city will be able to boast a brand new foot bridge from Pembroke Mall to Towne Center.  Keep in mind this will be a bridge with a grand visual impression.  It will also help pedestrians negotiate the ten lanes of traffic and for that it would probably be worth the cost.  One person has died already trying to get across to Towne Center.

virginia beach real estate: Powerful But Small - 01/28/08 06:07 AM
If you haven't already, buy one of these critters and never be in the dark again.  It is a flashlight that runs on a 3 volt battery.  You usually put them in cameras.  These put out about 150 lumen which for the size is just crazy.  It is smaller then the the AA flashlights but puts them to shame.  There are several of them out there with different features.  Just Google CREE CR123A and you will get a bunch.  Look them over as there are ones with switches, ones that turn and so on.  Yes they are pricey but you will … (3 comments)

virginia beach real estate: Oceana Safe? - 01/23/08 10:33 AM
The city council took steps to BRAC proof Oceana (Base Realignment and Closure Commission).  Will they work?  No one knows for sure but the city hopes the steps are enough to keep the city's largest employer around for a while longer.  The ordinances are designed to go further then what BRAC had recommended back in 2005.  Basically the city is taking the 65-70 decibel zone and dividing it into 3 sections.  The density of homes allowed gets lighter as it goes towards Chesapeake.  Some landowners feel the city is being unfair to them because they can't build with the same density as the what others can in the same … (0 comments)

virginia beach real estate: Police Chief Position Popular - 01/23/08 07:44 AM
The police chief job has at least 45 candidates.  That's quite a bit but city manager, William Harrell, thinks that competition will make for a better outcome.  There have been meetings with local groups such as the Fraternal Order of Police, the NAACP, The Public Safety Alliance as well city prosecutors and judges.  With all this input and all these candidates we all hope that Chesapeake will come up nothing but the best for important public safety position.

virginia beach real estate: Pigs Can Fly - 01/23/08 07:35 AM
Gov. Kaine bet Kansas Gov. Sebelius that his Hokies could beat the Jayhawks in the Orange Bowl.  Unfortunately, the Hokies got a little sidetracked and the Jayhawks won.  Now Gov. Kaine is flying a Virginia Ham to the governor from Kansas.  He is sending a 16lb Virginia Finest product.  I think the governor from Kansas is twice a winner.  Once for the game and once for having the finest ham in the country to eat.

State fire officials are citing campaigns promoting smoke detectors in homes to a decrease in fatalities caused by fires in homes.  In 2005 there were 90 deaths in Virginia.  For 2007 the total is 66.  The number of structural fires is expected to be about 30,000 which is about the same as in 2006.  The decrease in deaths is dramatic.

virginia beach real estate: Church Skate Park - 01/20/08 07:13 AM
Greenbrier Church has a skate park for the youngsters complete with rails, ramps, half pipes what-ever pipes.  The one thing they forgot was to get was an approval from the city to build one.  Go figure you would need something like that for private property.  Hopefully the city won't see it as competition for theirs which is only about a mile away.  The cost to build the small park on church property was about $20,000.  The city will vote on the matter in February.

virginia beach real estate: Virginia Beach Real Estate Developer Reduces Footprint - 12/04/07 02:57 AM
Indigo Dunes just won't go away.  It's a shame city council wouldn't buy this wonderful property but it is what it is.  The developer has reduced the wetlands damage from 3.91 acres to 2.35 which is nothing to sneeze at.  There are still a lot of hurdles to overcome but L.M. Sandler & Sons maybe on the right track.

virginia beach real estate: Virginia Beach Donates Tissue - 11/28/07 10:43 AM
Imagine 1.7 million tissue grafts since 1982.  That's how many grafts LifeNet has provided and with new headquarters off of Concert Dr there should be plenty more.  I was amazed at the amount of work and time it takes to get tissue to the correct people.  A heart valve can take 60 days waiting before it can be cleared for processing.  Then it has to be processed, rechecked and delivered-at a temperature of -385 degrees Fahrenheit.  My hats off to this dedicated group of people.    … (0 comments)

virginia beach real estate: Virginia Beach Kiss - 11/27/07 10:52 AM
Columbus St at Towne Center has a new statue.  Not that anybody knew about it.  No ceremony, it was just installed.   The statue, called "The Kiss" started life as a private moment between Debby and Breck Wood in Currituck Count, N.C. when a picture of them in the tender embrace was taken.  Debbie Wood commissioned the statue as a suprise for her husband who was dying of cancer.  Breck Wood passed on last fall and the statue was now just an after thought.  Debbie Wood decided it would be nice to have the statue donated to the city.  Several places were … (0 comments)

virginia beach real estate: Chesapeakes' Ken Easley - 11/27/07 08:11 AM
What does a NFL star do when he retires?  Hopefully move back home and do some good work.  North Cascade Boulevard Park where Ken Easley learned to play some ball has gone downhill over the last 25 years.  It was an all black park and once integration started to mostly work the importance of the park went away.  Blacks had better places to play and no longer had to go long distances to get to the park.  The city now wants to upgrade the park and Ken Easley has promised to put some money towards reviving the leagues that once played there.    … (0 comments)

virginia beach real estate: Tools: SD Card Transformer - 11/27/07 12:46 AM
Here is the neatest device I have seen in a while.  It is a SD card that transforms right before your eyes.  What does it transform into?  Why a device that will fit into any old USB port.  Thats right.  Take your SD card out of your camera, push and pull the card a bit and presto change o you can plug it right into your USB port.  No adapters, no cables.  They are hard to find and cost a bit more but are completely worth it.

virginia beach real estate: Pungo Ferry Rd - 11/26/07 01:59 AM
Oh my goodness.  They want to build a 60 foot tall storage shed for 648 boats right where the old Capt. George's used to be and everyone thinks its a great idea.  This site used to be the place to go for food and swimming but since the resturant closed two years ago not much goes on.  Southeast Marine wants to buy the site and give it a face-lift.  They want to try and attract the snowbirds as they pass through.  I guess we'll wait and see what happens.  … (0 comments)

virginia beach real estate: Chesapeake Sends Ethanol Plant Packing - 11/24/07 01:15 AM
Chesapeake city council said no to the ethanol plant   Residents from Portsmouth and Chespeake spoke in droves at a recemt council meeting about the proposed plant and not many were for it.  The owner of the property was disappointed but will move on.  There are plenty of other commercial enterprises he can put up without asking for the council's approval.  Hopefully none will be as smelly as the ethanol plant.

virginia beach real estate: Last Rose - 11/23/07 01:02 AM
This is the last rose of the season.  How sad but it is the beginning of a new season.  I shall see what type of flowers I can find in the cold season around here.  Please share your "last of the season" pictures.  I did do a bit of photo shopping to make the background darker.
