living in east contra costa county: Royal Rangers Father Son Campout! - 10/04/09 07:46 AM

Friday night and Saturday I took three of my boys to the Royal Rangers Father Son Campout.  The annual Father Son Campout is not too intensive and is really designed to get the dads together and to get the younger boys on a campout.
We took the boys over to Lake Del Valle in Livermore.  My 13 year old came to help me heard my younger boys.  I allowed my 11 year old to opt out for baseball (He plays Fall ball), but the real fun was for my 6 year old and 5 year old.  Those two have been … (3 comments)

Edna Hills at the Jr High Wrestling Championships on 9-23-09
Well this is the final Wrestling Tournament of the year.  Edna Hills did very well and took home a number of medals.  Many of the kids will never wrestle again, but some will come back next year, some will sign up for the club wrestling season, and some will go out for the High School Team.
This post is going to be a brag on my son Nelson.  He is pictured here with his friend on the team Scotty showing off the muscles.  Nelson won the Silver Medal.  He wrestled three … (1 comments)

Edna Hill Jr High Wrestling Match 9-21-09
I had missed the tournament on September 16, 2009; so no video of that match.  There were some very good matches; even some that we lost.  Here are three good ones:
First of all Ryan, one of our teams better wrestlers looses one here.  The kid he was Wrestling has been to a number of national tournaments and is very good.

The Next one is Bryer and Bryer is one of our top Wrestlers.

This last one is my son lossing to Sullivan.  He almost gets him and … (2 comments)

living in east contra costa county: Edna Hill Jr High Wrestling Match 9-15-09 - 09/26/09 04:19 AM
Edna Hill Jr High Wrestlers have had a great season.  Wrestling is a very difficult sport.  I see a lot of kids come out who are natural athletes and expect to be instant successes, and are not.  Many of them leave and go back to the other sports that have come so easy to them.
The biggest skill for wrestling is sticking with it and applying yourself.  Coach Chappel would say that when two wrestlers are well matched the heart they put into it will make the difference.  I like this things as they are the life lessons I try to … (1 comments)

East Contra Costa County Royal Rangers - The Trail of the Silver Saber

My four oldest boys are Members of Outpost 5 of the Royal Rangers in the Sioux Section.  Our new year got rolling at the end of July.  Royal Rangers is a lot like Scouting, but through the church.  We provide an outdoor experience and training with Spiritual Development.
This weekend my two oldest boys went to a Leadership Training Weekend.  It is part of a series of six camps to earn the Silver Saber which is one of the awards they can get.  The Silver Saber is … (0 comments)

living in east contra costa county: Putting the Crew to work – Lessons from Tom Sawyer - 08/23/09 05:18 AM
I have been getting pretty frustrated with my kids. They had not been helping keeping up with the house and had been fighting a lot. The other day I turned off the TV when I left and said no TV until such and such is complete. I came home and the TV was on. That did it I blew. I put the TV in the garage, collected all the Game Boys and assorted garbage and unplugged computers from the internet (except mine and my wife’s).
They really were not getting a clue. For about a week I have been collecting DVD’s … (2 comments)

living in east contra costa county: Harvest Park Bowl - 08/11/09 07:28 AM
Harvest Park Bowl is the place to Bowl in Brentwood California. If you have not been bowling in sometime you ought to stop by the Harvest Park Bowl and throw a few balls. Harvest Park Bowl is located at 5000 Balfour Road, just near the corner of Brentwood Blvd (old Highway 4); Behind the Cheaper Gas and car wash. Or call them at 516-1221.
Bowling is great family fun and Harvest Park Bowl has a great set up for families. They host birthday parties, and we have had my kid’s parties at Harvest Park Bowl. If the kids are small and … (1 comments)

living in east contra costa county: Living in Oakley - Diner's, Drive Ins and Dives - Golden Dragon Buffet - 08/07/09 03:10 PM
Golden Dragon Buffet is a fine Buffet Restaurant located in Brentwood California. When people think of buffet dinning they often think of mass quantities of mediocre food. Well at the Golden Dragon Buffet you should think of mass quantities of really good food.

The Golden Dragon Buffet features Asian and American cuisine. Most of the American food is so so. Stick the Asian dinning, you will not be disappointed. My personal favorite is the bacon wrapped crab, but there are many fine choices to make off the buffet tables, including generous portions of sea food. The fried scallops are only … (1 comments)

living in east contra costa county: Antioch Indoor Sports Center - 08/01/09 04:13 PM
Antioch Indoor Sports Center
The Antioch Indoor Sports Center is one of the coolest things to come along in Antioch in a while. The Antioch Indoor Sports Center is next to Aladino’s Pizza on Sunset and is run by the same people Aladino’s used to just have batting cages then the got the land next door and went wild.
The Antioch Indoor Sports Center features a large skating rink geared towards roller Hockey, but the have free skating, indoor soccer, and I understand the can set it up for Arena Football. Oh, and if I didn’t mention it, the Antioch Indoor … (2 comments)

living in east contra costa county: Private Enterprise and Market Responsiveness - Or Profits of Doom! - 06/18/09 03:56 AM
What is going on in the lending market place is an example of why the Government needs to keep hands off.  I do not want to go back over the past - we can and have hashed that one around too long, except to say the government was part of the problem from day one.
What I want to talk about is Today and the problems in the lending market and business in general.  In most industries when there is an innovation or some new market develops everyone hops on it.  People and products come out of the wood work to … (0 comments)

living in east contra costa county: The East Contra Costa Market is Taking Off! - 06/12/09 07:23 AM
Every Month I prepare a Market Report on the Cities in East Contra Costa County. If you are considering Living in Contra Costa County East County is an affordable and quality option.
I have been cautioning for months now that the market is ready to turn. Now it has. Prices on a SF basis are up by 1-2% in a one month period. My reports focus on the Communities of Brentwood CA, Antioch CA, Pittsburg CA, Oakley CA, and Discovery Bay CA.
Part of this increase is due to the decline in the Bank Owned Home market. But more Bank Owned … (0 comments)

living in east contra costa county: How do you figure! What is that home worth? - 06/07/09 04:33 PM
Figuring the value of a home and what price to list it at can be one of the biggest challenges we face as agents. If you read my post you know that price per SF is a number I like. It is not perfect, but it is a good starting point.
Just to give you an idea of some of the considerations and agent may use, I had a client in East Contra Costa County call me about a home evaluation. In this market there are rapid price changes and it is wise to try to find very recent comps. I … (0 comments)

living in east contra costa county: Want the Right Call? It’s Gonna Cost Ya – But not Much! - 05/26/09 09:50 AM
My two oldest of five boys are from a first marriage. One of the awkward compromises of the situation is the oldest boy goes to school in with us and plays Little League in East County Little League in East Contra Costa County. Son number two plays in the Continental Little League in the Walnut Creek/Concord area.
I see about the same number of games for both boys (as many as I can). Each league has it’s own style and approach. One big difference is that in the ECLL they pay umpires, in the CLL they have parents taking turns umpiring.

living in east contra costa county: Living in Brentwood – Dinner’s, Drive Ins, and Dives – The Silver Skillet - 05/23/09 01:46 PM
I have lived in East Contra Costa County for over 10 years and have been Living in Brentwood for over 3 and just found a new great family friendly restaurant: The Silver Skillet on Brentwood Blvd.
Last night my wife and I were heading out and the place we were going to was closed so we pulled in at this little spot we had never seen before. It only seats about 39 and is very down home, no chain here. The menu is eclectic mix of American and Mexican, but I would not describe it as a Mexican restaurant. They do … (0 comments)

living in east contra costa county: The Mighty Weston Goes to Bat! Or How I Spend My Time! - 05/22/09 09:04 AM
One of the things we like about living in east Contra Costa County is the many family oriented activities. Although we live in Brentwood my boys play Little League in East County Little League. Most cities have at least one organized youth baseball league. Brentwood is primarily a Pony League town.
We choose the ECLL, centered in Oakley, as I played Little League as a child and I liked the flexible age groupings that allows kids placement to be based on a mixture of age and skill. I have 5 boys and my oldest plays in the Majors, the next one … (0 comments)
