telluride colorado: Politically Correct Silliness - Where the Hell Is Bill Murray When You Need Hiim? - 06/29/10 02:14 PM
I don't even know what to say about this except that it serves as a great example that silliness in the pursuit of political correctness knows no bounds - or in this case, knows no boundaries.
So I'm spending my customary summer sojourn at my place in Telluride CO and this morning I'm greeted with a bigger than life photo of a rodent on the front page of today's Telluride Daily Planet. It's a prairie dog.

Nothing special there.
Oh yes there is. This is one of the prairie dogs who reside in a 23 acre Prairie Dog Preserve set … (10 comments)

telluride colorado: Telluride's Lunar Cup Ski Races are on for tomorrow. Come on up! - 06/25/10 08:12 AM
Looking for something a little out of the ordinary to do tomorrow? Why don't you come on up to Telluride Colorado for the ski races? Yep, that's right. There's plenty of good snow this year and so the Lunar Cup ski races will be held as usual (well, almost as usual) up in the Savage basin above the Tomboy.
The Lunar Cup races have been an annual event almost every year for maybe 25 years or so now, maybe longer, maybe less. Years ago we just used to ski up there because it was the only place left in the area … (1 comments)

telluride colorado: A Fed Bear is a Dead Bear. Ouray bear bites the hand that feeds him. - 08/11/09 09:23 AM
Last month during my summer visit to Telluride Colorado, we were again visited by bears. Bears have been roaming the streets and alleys of town for several years now in search of grub. I spotted one crossing the street about 1/2 block from my house this year and we later watched him mosey down the alley behind my house and then amble laconically back up - no more than 20 feet away from my daughter and I. It was a thrill even though I couldn't get my daughter to get close enough for a flash photo of the beasty. They are … (4 comments)

telluride colorado: The Hardrock 100 - Timberline Endurance Challenge - 07/13/08 05:35 PM
6-13 hardrock 100 They came from 24 states and 6 foreign countries this year. 124 men and 16 women lined up in Silverton Colorado on July 11, 2008 for the 15th running of the Hardrock 100, one of the most challenging endurance races in the country. Let me tell you, I've hiked and Jeeped these mountains my whole life - there's simply no way, not enough incentive to ever get me to line up with these hardcore fanatics - but there's a waiting list of people hoping they'll get selected in the lottery to run this mother. Here's the fun lying … (7 comments)

telluride colorado: World's First AC Power - The Gold King Mine - 07/10/08 06:06 PM
6-10 LL Nunn A few days back in my post about Trout Lake, I mentioned a historical factoid that Trout Lake water was used to generate the first AC power station in the country. Today I drove up to the Gold King Basin, the site of the mine that inspired the story.
So now, as Paul Harvey might say, here's the rest of the story.
In 1881 a washed up Leadville restaurateur named Lucien Lucius Nunn made his way to Telluride, Colorado to see what he could roust up in this newly booming mining town. During the next decade, LL Nunn … (4 comments)

telluride colorado: A Small Town America 4th of July - Telluride Colorado - 07/06/08 01:35 PM
7-6 Telluride 4th There's nothing quite so quintessentially American as a small town 4th of July celebration - especially when the small town knows how to do it up big. Telluride Colorado has been celebrating the 4th in a BIG way since way before my half century of memory comes into play. In fact the Telluride Fire Department, who puts the shindig on, celebrated it's 130th birthday this year so they've got a plenty of experience doing this sort of thing. The 4th here always starts with a bang - a big bang called the Powder Monkey Breakfast. The firemen - … (6 comments)

telluride colorado: Leon Russell - Rico Colorado 7-3-08 - 07/05/08 04:31 PM

telluride colorado: The Smugglers Union Mine - Summer TraveLog 3 - 06/29/08 06:31 PM
6-29 Tomboy Basin Welcome back to my Travel Log for 29 June. If you've been following along or just stopped here by accident, I'm on vacation this month and I'm keeping this wandering journal for my own amusement and to keep friends up-to-date. Our country has so many diverse and beautiful geographies and while I may be somewhat biased, I was lucky to grow up in one of the most beautiful - the Colorado Rockies. Yesterday we took a great trip over to our cabin on Trout Lake.  (http://activerain.com/blogsview/571021/Trout-Lake-Colorado-Summer) and before that we drove from Southern Ca to Southern Co and … (4 comments)

telluride colorado: Trout Lake Colorado - Summer Vacation Series #2 - 06/28/08 05:33 PM
6-28 trout lake Y'all know I'm on vacation this month and instead of writing about a lot of real estate stuff (which I'm tryin' real hard to forget), I'm going to do a series of travel logs and show you some nice areas of the Colorado Rockies. I'm originally from a small mining town about 9,000 feet high in the Southwest Corner of Colorado called Telluride. If you saw Tom Cruise's recent interview on Oprah, he filmed it at his place here. Tom owns a place, Oprah used to and the town is littered with movie stars, music legends and business … (20 comments)

telluride colorado: Just A Box Of Rain - Not For DeadHeads Only - 04/08/08 10:07 AM
I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and we got to reminiscing, as Old Dudes sometimes do, and we soon settled on a topic of mutual interest - The Grateful Dead. Now my friend is about as button-down looking as you get, a suit-and-tie kind of Realtor, brush-cut hair, well respected in his community, active in his Association, very successful but with a crazy gleam in his eyes - if you look closely.
Well, he gets to telling me about the first Dead show he went to in '68 and the copious amount of pharmaceuticals that were present … (12 comments)
