edmonton: Do You Know The Alberta Advantage? - 10/11/07 12:47 AM
A marketing term, "branding" if you will, of a province by the genius that is Ralph Klein. The Alberta Advantage was used to promote, well, Alberta's advantages to the world. From giving Alberta shaped cheques (can't find proof of this but I heard it on a podcast -urban legend?? folklore??) to charities to opening Alberta offices in countries around the world; Klein started a highly successful marketing campaign for a province like it was the hottest new product around. And do you know what? It is."Entrepreneurial-ism" and business are what Klein promoted; one look at Alberta's blockbuster economy shows that he … (2 comments)

If you have all your saving or retirement nest egg in the market, then I am really sorry and am not making light of this situation.Today on MSN "A record high for crude oil and continued concerns about the health of financial stocks crushed a morning rally, extending the losses the stock market has seen since mid-July to about 6%""Crude oil had its first close above $78 a barrel in New York today and there was talk … (0 comments)

This optimistic outlook is a result of continued strength in employment growth and projected oil sands development." edmonton: Disgruntled - 06/11/07 12:34 AM
This comment came from a disgruntled Edmontonian. I planned to email him directly but Dustin's email address was a dud. "Dustin's email: Your "real estate investments" are going to put me on the street. Unfortunately, real estate has now become something that only investors can afford. I am a professional engineer making good money and housing in Alberta is simply unaffordable. I have absolutely no idea how it is affordable for a grocer or the rest of the working class to afford a home. Why not focus your business on helping people find affordable housing regardless of socioeconomic status? Your greed … (2 comments)

edmonton: Gouging Renters - My Eye - 04/24/07 10:44 AM
"Every renter in Alberta is in danger of being gouged because of the Conservatives' refusal to protect them from huge rent increases," Martin told a news conference. "This government has chosen to listen to the interests of the big landlords and real estate investment trusts like Boardwalk rather than those of ordinary Albertans,..." NDP MLA Ray Martin Edmonton Sun Opinion Kerry DiotteI'm just not feeling it. Of course the newspapers are on and on about the evil "Big Landlords" who are raising rents $500 a month, twice a year. edmonton: Lower Down Payments - 04/24/07 01:34 AM
Sorry I am a little late on this one. The federal government passed a bill to lower the mortgage downpayment requirement to 20%."The new legislation within Bill C-37 affects all mortgages or loans on residential property and requires that borrowers carry mortgage default insurance when the loan-to-value exceeds 80 per cent. The previous 75 per cent maximum loan-to-value had been in place for 40 years."Source RBCThis will really help people in overpriced markets. edmonton: A Quickie About Mortgage Fraud by Danielle - 04/09/07 12:30 PM
When I was a crazy teenager I used to tell my cousin all the stuff I would get up to. She would hold up a fork close to her eye and peer at me to see, "How you would look behind bars". I can pretty much guarantee that no one looks good behind bars so take heed.Mortgage fraud is rampant. Don`t lie on your mortgage application. The banks don`t care who told you it was okay to write what. Just tell the truth. It is a crime and if you get caught there will be a lot of grief especially if … (0 comments)

edmonton: To Enforce Or Not To Enforce? That IS The Question - 04/08/07 11:52 AM
Unlike B.C and Ontario there are no government enforced rent increased guidelines in Alberta. Landlords are free to raise their rents as much as they like every six months. These rent hikes are important to make the property investment work, of course most landlords work with integrity and raise rents in reasonable increments.
"....a young family facing a total rent increase of $375. They faced a hike in December and one that's coming in June. They'll wind up paying $1,175 for their north-end condo, a full 50% of their take-home pay." Kerry Diotte
However, after a 52% increase in real estate prices last … (1 comments)
