700,000 Points I ran right past that number, I'm close to 703,000 now. How did that happen? I remember not too long ago I noticed that I had about 697,000 points and I thought: "Oh, I need to write a post when I hit 700k"! But I didn't! Do you know why? Because I don't spend much time looking at my points. I used to....when it was so exciting to see that number grow each day, but now? I'm just a blogger...it's just a habit. I volunteered to handle the write-up of our Master Mind Essay this month. Our fearless leader is lounging in Hawaii this week. Aloha! The January 31 Day Challenge seemed like a good idea at the time. :) Ok....still a good idea, but it can be exhausting. Today, for instance.....a blog post? You have got to be kidding me. I was up late last night, up early today and out all day. A blog post EVERY day? uh.... But here I am.....trying to work my way up to the required word count. Are you bored? I understand....me too! I'm not sure if you've noticed....cough, cough...but there was an election last night. With big results! This morning, I struggled to find the results on the California Propositions. Oh sure, I heard right away that we didn't legalize pot.....like, wow dude. But I had a hard time finding the results on the less controversial Propositions and it occurred to me that if I was having a tough time....others were too. It happens to all of us...new and "used" Active Rainers. I don't know why I just called us "used" but it sounded funny, did it grab your attention? I hear from so many new/not so new Active Rainers who tell me how nervous they are about posting a blog article. Why? I mean....I get it, it's scary to put your ideas out into the blog-o-sphere....but everyone has started at sometime. And Active Rain is such a friendly environment that you are going to get encouragement, not ridicule. I went to Active Rain Camp yesterday! It was great! What I liked most was the way they put a ton of useful information into a "bullet point" format. What I mean by that is that they didn't overwhelm us, they really condensed it down to a "DO THIS" list. I came away with some definite plans for my week. But that's not what this post is about. I've been reading blogs recently on several platforms, including Active Rain when the commenters are using condescension as a tool to make their points. Some of these are Member's Only blog posts, but many are not. The other sites like Trulia and Zillow are all public forums and ones which many consumers are using to do some research. So I wonder the strategy behind working condescension and contempt into the tone of the answers and comments. I grew up with the guidance of civility and constructive criticism. I love to write...always have. There is nothing more interesting than a blank page. When I start typing, I find that my ideas take on a life of their own. One of my favorite classes in high school was about writing. Not just the grammar, but the creativity...although I still have a hard time ending a sentence with a preposition. I bought my first Thesaurus, first Dictionary and Elements of Style and placed them on my desk at home. Every assignment had a goal or objective. It was a pursuasive or informational, fiction or not.
