The legendary island of Avalon figures prominently in the tales of King Arthur. It was where the sword “Excalibur” was forged and where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann. The island was associated with mystical practices. It was called “The Fortunate Island” and its name comes from the Welsh word for apple because the mystical island produced apples and grapes, among other things without cultivation.
