On April 30th, 2007 Governor Charlie Crist of Florida announced that he had signed the Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax holiday. The Bill will allow tax breaks to Florida residents purchasing certain items needed to help protect them, their families and property during a Hurricane event. Government Sponsored Entities Legislation This past Tuesday May 2nd 2007, the House passed H.R. 1427, the bill to reform Government Sponsored Entities (GSEs), by a vote of 313-104. The amendment to eliminate the bill's provision allowing regional adjustments to the conforming loan limits in high-cost housing markets did not pass. The amendment was very important and although the passage of the H.R. 1427 is a victory for Realtors the failure of the amendment to make into the bill was not a good thing. This legislation will also await action now in the Senate.

Industrial Loan Company Legislation: H.R. 698 passed in the House. This was very im portant legislation that goes hand in hand with HR 111 and for Realtors this is a positive step forward in keeping banking and commerce apart as required by law. H.R. 698, the bill to close the loophole that currently allows commercial firms to own certain types of banks, overwhelmingly passed the House on Monday with a vote of 371-16. We need to make our voices heard. You need to speak with your State Senators and insist that they sign Senate Bill 413. Contact your congressmen to sign onto HR111 in the House. Congress established a national policy against mixing banking and commerce. Allowing banks to enetr the real estate brokerage industry is inconsistent with this policy and would likely lead to concentration of market power, conflicts of interests, and unfair competitive advantages for banks. The Federal Reserve Board and the Treasury Department have proposed regulations authorizing banks to engage in the real estate brokerage businesses. These are good things, growth management is responsible and a commendable approach to planning a successful blue print for a communities future.
