HINT:  Two things.

ANSWER:  First, any open junction box should be covered to prevent inadvertent contact and electrical shock should someone accidentally stick something into the open box. And second, this situation is especially dangerous because the open conductors are hanging directly above the copper metal plumbing pipes.  So let's just go ahead and power up the entire plumbing … (0 comments)

HINT:  What's that white stuff on the wood?

ANSWER:  Microbial growth.  Many people quickly call this mold, but without a lab analysis, we don't know for sure.  A sample should be taken and sent for lab analysis.  See the closeup of the material below.

Clearly something happened here to create this growth.  For mold growth to occur, … (0 comments)

HINT: Water flows downhill, and this picture was taken from a roof top.

ANSWER:  Composite roof shingles should always be installed so that the shingles overlap from the top down.  In this photo, the shingles from one side of the valley were simply carried over on top of the other side, in the forefront.  That puts the downslope shingles above the upslope … (4 comments)

tennessee: Google Juice, What's That? - 03/25/10 10:03 PM
Recently I read a blog on ActiveRain where a participant used the term "Google Juice".  Well I have been recently making an effort to improve my website Search Engine Optimization (SEO) by reading some SEO books and articles on the internet, but none of these sources used the term Google Juice.
But as I read on I realized this Rainer was right.  What he referred to as "Google Juice" is just the stuff SEO is all about.  That is trying to get search engines in general and Google in particular to pay attention to your website.  When that happens your website … (4 comments)

Two of the most visible and impressive components of Ancient Roman structural engineering and architecture include the arch and the column.  This article is about the arches designed and used frequently in ancient Roman engineering.

A trip to Rome will quickly reveal that the ancient Romans were very advanced in engineering and architecture.  The use of arches as a structural device was rampant in buildings and bridges.  No place is this more prevalent than in the Colosseum itself, shown above.  Arches were used to strengthen walls, provide passageways, and provide ventilation.  … (0 comments)

tennessee: Foreclosed Homes - Lenders, Get Out of Your Cubicle! - 03/19/10 01:06 PM
So my Client for a Home Inspection called me today to cancel the Inspection.  Reason, the utilities were not turned ON.
We all knew this was a foreclosed and bank-owned home, so we also knew the home had probably been winterized.  That means it has the water shut off at the street and the gas is probably pinned OFF at the meter.  At least the electricity was ON.
We ask the Client when they first booked the Inspection to make sure all utilities are ON, so they can get their money's worth in the Inspection.  It is hard to check the … (4 comments)

tennessee: Nashville Building Inspection - Foundation Failure - What is Wrong With This Picture? 3/2/10 - 03/02/10 12:29 PM
HINT:  Why is this new apartment building laying on its side in Shanghai?

Answer:  Someone violated the Cone of Compression.  It seems someone decided to dig out a hole next to the building to build an underground parking garage.  That is where the Cone of Compression is.  The space below and adjacent to the foundation at a 45 degree angle cannot be tampered with or the Cone loses its structural integrity.

They put the dirt on the other side of the building for short term storage.  The weight of that dirt put lateral pressure on the foundation which was … (7 comments)
