family: Today, My Baby Becomes a Man - 11/16/12 06:55 PM
Today is your 18th birthday, son.  Good Lord.  Where did the time go?  I swear, just a blink ago, I was bringing you home from the hospital.  Now, you're old enough to receive a letter from (gulp) the Selective Services for your "registration".  I remember every bit of those 18 years and then some.
I remember the first time you said "hello" with those soft butterfly kicks inside my belly.  I remember our long talks on my drive home from work where, really, I did the only talking before you were born.  As soon as we found out that you were … (6 comments)

family: Saying Grace in a Restaurant - 08/17/09 05:22 AM
A mother took her children to a restaurant.  Her six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As they bowed their heads, he said, 'God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!'Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, the mother heard a woman remark, 'That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!'Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked his … (28 comments)

family: There's Always Room for Beer! - 08/17/09 05:19 AM
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the two beers.A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.  When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.  He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.  He shook the jar lightly.  The pebbles … (10 comments)

family: Pee-Wee Turns 86! - 06/14/09 03:44 PM
This is my husband's beautiful grandmother, Stella Clouse.  She turned 86 yesterday.  Everyone calls her Pee-Wee because she stands about 4'8" tall (or pretty close to it).  We were fortunate enough to have her in our home for the last week to spend some time with us visiting.  It was awesome.  She is the only grandmother I have left alive and the only grandmother I have really known for almost the last 20 years, since my husband and I first started dating.  I was never close to any of my parents' parents (my grandmothers and grandfathers on all sides of my … (27 comments)

family: When a Hero Comes Along - 05/11/09 11:45 AM
I know this is a day late, but I don't happen to think mothers should only be heralded once a year.  Besides, I took yesterday off to allow my boys the chance to celebrate the gloriousness that is me.  But, I would be remiss if I did not stop and pay homage to the one woman in the world who outshines my own gloriousness: my mom.  Everything I have learned in life and everything I have become, I owe to my mother.  At 20, she married my father.  Over the next nine years, she managed to produce five children and two … (16 comments)

family: WORDLESS WEDNESDAY: A Look Forward - 04/29/09 09:44 AM

BECAUSE I CAN NEVER ACTUALLY BE "WORDLESS": My son's Winnie-the-Pooh is just looking at what lies ahead.  Pooh's been with us since my son was four years old.  He goes just about everywhere we do.  When my son lost his Boppy, Pooh is the one that took his place.  If you tell him I shared this photo with you, I will deny it!

family: Are You a Man or a Mouse? - 04/03/09 12:57 AM
When I was pregnant, my husband and I rented one side of a duplex owned by my husband's Uncle Fred.  Living out in an undeveloped area of Lake Elsinore, CA meant that the days were quiet, but the nights were full of life.  One evening, when I was about six months pregnant, Uncle Fred came over to visit.  It wasn't a very far way to travel, since he and his wife lived in the other half of the duplex.  Suddenly, a small, scurrying movement caught the corner of my husband's eye.  Both Uncle Fred and I, of course, turned and gasped.  … (12 comments)

family: Yum-Yum! Gimme Some! - 03/13/09 09:00 AM

This is a photo of my youngest nephew, Andrew Chavez.  He is 19 months old and quite the character, I am told.  This is a photo of my father-in-law feeding him.  Andrew looks ALOT like his mom's side of the family, which is funny because the Chavez gene has been dominate in all other grandchildren.  But, in this picture, the Chavez really comes out.  He is all about the chow!  Too cute!
