hawaii: President Obama's winter vacation on the Windward Side of Oahu, Hawaii - 12/30/13 11:51 AM
President Obama vacations every year with his family in a vacation rental on the Windward Side of Oahu on Kailua Beach which is located next to the Kaneohe Marine Corps base. Today, in case you are interested, he was playing golf on the Klipper Club on the base.
Needless to say, this is a beautiful area across the steep Koolau Mountain Range that bisects the island of Oahu. The Windward Side is also the "rainy" side which has resulted in steep vertical ridges that produce beautiful waterfalls much of the year.

How do you get there from Honolulu, you ask?  I have some … (10 comments)

hawaii: Last weekend of Pumpkin Festival in Kapolei, Oahu Hawaii - 10/24/13 02:10 AM
This is the last weekend of the annual Pumpkin Festival. It's a fun time for the whole family.
My little grandsons absolutely love to go to the Aloun Farms in Kapolei, Oahu, Hawaii for the annual Pumpkin Festival.
The events include free tractor pulled hay rides which is their absolute favorite.
Mom and dad also make them pick corn and sunflowers to take home, something different to do for these city kids.
And, the big deal, is to each pick out their own pumpkin which they then take home and carve - with a little help from mom and dad, of course.

hawaii: Video View from the Aloha Tower towards downtown Honolulu, Hawaii - 09/03/13 04:48 PM
Have you recently gone up to the top of the Aloha Tower while you were in Honolulu? It's really a terrific view over Honolulu Harbor, the downtown skyline, over Kakaako, Sand Island, and out to the Pacific Ocean. Often you might catch an oceanliner docked at the Aloha Tower for a day, but not today. It was all quiet around the waterfront on this absolutely beautiful afternoon.
And, yes, the skyline has changed dramatically with a lot of new apartment and commercial highrises with fabulous views out over the ocean. So today, I thought I would turn the tables, and look back at … (11 comments)

hawaii: Ala Moana Beach Park, a wonderful swimming beach in Honolulu, Hawaii - 07/28/13 04:46 PM
Sometimes the waves do kick up a bit here in Hawaii, even on the Waikiki side, so where to go on a hot summer's day?
Those who live in Honolulu tend to stay out of Waikiki when it comes to going to the beach. Mostly, because parking is tough and it's quite a hike to the beach.
Not so at Ala Moana Beach Park.
There is lots of FREE parking, and it's just across the street from the Ala Moana Shopping Center in case you want to load up on picnic items at the last … (5 comments)

hawaii: Condominiums for sale at Diamond Head, Honolulu, Hawaii - 07/27/13 04:49 PM
Have you ever dreamed of living at Diamond Head on the ocean?
There are some very attractive condominium prices in the Diamond Head neighborhood of Honolulu. For example, I checked the MLS just now, and there are 59 listings on the market from as low as $79,900. Six listings were between $100,000 and $200,000 with 4 of them at 2947 Kalakaua Avenue, an oceanfront building.
However, these are all leasehold and it is important to find out when the lease runs out and how much it would be to purchase it in fee simple. This could become a real problem down the … (9 comments)
