buying a house: Buyers, Trust me--One day you will just know! - 11/14/10 10:56 PM
We all have something for which we are on a perpetual, personal quest  For me it is the perfect pair of  shoes. My closet is filled with plenty of 'almosts' and 'pretty close' pairs. I could try to explain to you what makes a shoe 'perfect,' but my words won't be able to duplicate that moment when I slip my foot in and I know that I must buy THAT pair. The same goes for my son's baseball cap requirements...believe me, he has tried to explain and while I mostly 'get it,' I can't select one for him--he must do it himself. The … (7 comments)

buying a house: Hard work is the new BUZZ! - 11/09/10 03:51 AM
For those of you who do not live with a  14 year old boy, you may not know that Call of Duty: Black Ops went on sale at midnight. My son, thankfully, did not push to be one of those in line (so I did not have to say 'no'), but he told me last night that he is sure that at least one of his friends (and likely more) were in line!Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  will be released on November 19, 2010. My son HAS asked to go to the midnight show. Like any good parent, I responded … (0 comments)

buying a house: Fall is a GREAT time to buy a house! - 11/03/10 06:07 AM
Everyone has heard that Spring is a great time to buy a house.  The inventory is high, the flowers are blooming, the landscapers are out and the frenzy builds.
All the reasons why people love to buy in the Spring are the reasons that make the Fall an even better time to buy!
Why you ask?  Take each of those reasons and flip them around.  In the Fall, the inventory is low, the bushes look overgrown and no one has bothered to keep up with the garden. Best of all, there are far fewer buyers out there. It can be a … (6 comments)

buying a house: First Time Home Buyers--Who Will Be Living There? - 10/04/10 11:59 PM
In the Washington D.C. Metro area, and specifically Northern Virginia, the search for a first home can be a particular challenge. Single family homes are often out of reach for all but the most successful first time buyer (and even then, only those who are disciplined savers), which leaves the First Time Buyers with a choice of purchasing a townhouse or condominium. With the townhouse and condo options, First Time Home Buyers have to very clearly define their needs. Often this means figuring out who will be living in the property. Will you be living alone, with a significant other, or do you want the … (0 comments)

buying a house: What do Mattress Shopping and Real Estate have in Common? - 08/23/10 09:13 AM
Yesterday, my husband, son and I headed out to buy a new mattress for my son.  I went into this as an informed consumer:**I had a budget**I had done research about what I wanted and why**I had done some pricing and knew about what I should expect to pay for what I wantedFor some inexplicable reason, we have 3 mattress chain stores within a couple of miles of my house (do people buy that many mattresses? They must!). We decided that we should go to all 3 to make sure we ended up with the best product at the best price. We … (10 comments)

buying a house: What To Expect after Ratifying a Virginia Contract - 08/12/10 05:08 AM
I expect that most Virginia Realtors explain the process of buying a home to their clients before they begin to look at property. The excitement of 'househunting' often keeps many buyers from really focusing on the steps that come after the contract is signed. I thought it might be worth a quick review of what happens after you have a ratified contract. Keep in mind that, while most contracts follow a prescribed process, each contract is unique and can have different contingencies. So both parties have signed the contract and all negotiations--to this point--have been resolved. What happens next?
