fairfax county: Live, Work, Play: Reston, VA Gets It's Own License Plate! - 07/17/09 09:30 AM
People who live in Reston, Virginia, love Reston! It is not unusual to meet families who have owned 2, 3 or 4 homes here. I am one of those people--and I can do it one better!  I grew up here, too.
For those of us who want to display our Reston allegiance, the Reston Citizens Association has designed a car license plate  that will be produced by the Department of Motor Vehicles (I read somewhere that Virginia has the largest percentage of vanity plates in the country...here is one more).
You can see a copy of the plate design, created by … (0 comments)

fairfax county: Reston Residents: Proposed Fairfax County Recreation Center - 07/15/09 10:11 AM
There is a proposal to build a Fairfax County Recreation Center at Brown's Chapel, off of Baron Cameron Avenue in Reston, Virginia.
The new site, as proposed, would include indoor tennis and an indoor swimming pool, as well as a work-out facility and meeting rooms.  The recreation center would be part of the Fairfax County Parks, but the land would be Reston land.
The land at Brown's Chapel currently is the home of Reston Day Camps, has baseball fields, walking paths, running trails, a basketball court, a chapel that used both for services and community meetings and a tot lot. It … (2 comments)

fairfax county: Summer Jobs are HARD to Come By! - 05/27/09 12:29 AM
I am the mother of a college student, a high school student and a middle school student.  I have told them (at least my two oldest) that they have to have a full-time summer jobs (Interestingly enough, their definition of full time and mine, differ greatly.  I have been discussing with them, ad nauseum, how in my mind full time is equal to 40 hours a week. In their mind, full-time means someone has agreed to pay them for their work on a weekly basis.  We are still trying to come to terms with this discrepancy ).
I have been somewhat … (1 comments)

fairfax county: Reston, VA-- A Community that is Just Right! - 05/18/09 03:17 AM
If you have read many of my posts, you know that I grew up, and now live, in Reston, Virginia.  Back when my parents moved here, it was already known for being a planned community.  Truth be told, I think most families were drawn here by the affordability, small town feel and public transportation.
Fast forward to today.  The draw for Reston remains the same.  Perhaps the use of public transportation does not lure as many folks, but there are still a lot of people who work predictable hours for the government and are able to take advantage of the bus/metro … (0 comments)

fairfax county: What I Like About Living in Reston, Virginia - 02/17/09 12:32 AM
Call me a small town girl, but I live in the same town (place) where I grew up. I always swore that I would not do that, but here I am and I could not be happier.I was 7 years old when we moved to Reston, Virginia.  As a second grader, I was oblivious to the community and what a special place the planned community of Reston was.  Growing up, I participated in all that Reston had to offer--swim team, soccer, Art Festivals, Community Theater, Concerts and more.  I did not know that this was any different than any other suburb. My … (0 comments)

fairfax county: Understanding Local Roads: 495, The Beltway - 01/27/09 02:38 AM
All you have to do is mention 495, The Beltway and there are drivers who will immediately tell you how much they hate it. There are people who will go out of their way to avoid driving this road. Understanding how it works and following some simple advice can make driving this road a much better experience.
I have recently been through teaching my 2 teenage daughters to drive. You cannot send a teenager--or even someone new to the area--out on to Washington metropolitan roads without being sure that they, 1) understand the concept of The Beltway and, 2) have driven … (1 comments)

fairfax county: Dulles Area Association of Realtors (DAAR) Recognized for Generosity - 01/26/09 07:44 AM
This weekend I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the D.C. Examiner and saw that in their 1/25/09 column called, "Brightest Lights of the Week," the Dulles Area Association of Realtors (DAAR) was recognized for their continued generosity  in giving money to local shelter-based charities. This tradition, which has been in place for 16 years, was continued despite the drastic slowdown in the local real estate market.  The money was raised at the DAAR annual auction. Congratulations DAAR Members and Staff for your continued support of the members of our community who most need a little extra help right now!

fairfax county: Congratulations Herndon High School in Fairfax County! - 01/24/09 08:59 AM
Last Spring my daughter, at the time a high school Sophomore, came to us and asked to transfer from her private Catholic high school to the local public high school, Herndon High School in Fairfax County.
We struggled with this decisions, NOT because of Herndon High School, but because we liked the school that she would be leaving.  After much deliberation we gave our blessing for the transfer.
It has been a wonderful experience for her both socially and academically.  She has found the teachers to be tough but fair, involved guidance counselors and a positive and nurturing environment. She is … (0 comments)

fairfax county: Understanding Local Roads: The Dulles Toll Road/Access Road/Greenway - 01/22/09 03:58 AM
There are a lot of wonderful things about living on the Virginia side of the D.C. Metro area; navigating and understanding the road system is not always one of them. I thought I would begin a short series explaining some of the more complicated roads. Where possible, I will also provide a brief history of how we got to this point of confusion!Last night I was on the way to my son's basketball practice when I drove by a sign for the Dulles Toll Road. Underneath that sign was another sign for the Dulles Access Road. The distinction to me is … (1 comments)

fairfax county: What Are Your Favorite House Features? - 01/03/09 05:42 AM
This morning in the Washington Post Real Estate section, there was an article by Katherine Salant entitled, Staying Power, We revisit two inventive '90s subdivisions. Have their design Innovations held up?  (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2009/01/02/ST2009010201510.html)
Besides my interest in all local real estate stories, I was particularly interested in this one, since both of the neighborhoods are in my local business market.
It got me thinking about the many, many houses I have see over the years and what some of the best--and worst--features have been.
One of the best I have seen is one of the reasons I bought my own house; the … (0 comments)

fairfax county: Do You Need Gardening Help in Northern Virginia? - 10/01/08 04:28 AM
Fairfax County has an organization called Fairfax County Master Gardeners which has been serving the community since 1976.

Most people have some responsibility for a plant in their life. You might care for an acre large, fully landscaped yard, or you might just care for the violet that used to belong to your grandmother. At some time or another, you may find yourself stumped over how to best care for your 'garden.'
This organization, which is sponsored by Virgina Cooperative Extension and supported by Merrifield Garden Center and the Fairfax County Park Authority can help you with your questions.  … (0 comments)

fairfax county: At What Age Can You Leave Your Child Home Alone in Fairfax County? - 09/30/08 04:49 AM
I have 3 children, the youngest of whom is in middle school. We have been through this debate several times already.  A lot of determining when a child can be left home alone depends on the child and their maturity level.  In Fairfax County, Virginia, there are guidelines that have been developed by social work professionals with input from the community. These are not laws, but what the country considers, 'minimal acceptable standards for the supervision of children.'

I got a small card with these standards when my oldest was  approximately 10. We posted it in the mudroom where … (1 comments)
