northern virginia: What to Spend Your Northern Virginia House Prep Money on When There is A Limit - 12/06/10 09:59 AM
You are a Northern Virginia homeowner preparing to list your house for sale. What do you spend your money on and how do you prioritize the projects?
We have all learned the value of being thrifty over the past several years. So it rubs many the wrong way to have their Realtor® tell them they need to make improvements to sell their house.  After all, you want to maximize your return...not shell out more money.
Any Realtor®  who has been around the market will tell you that this is definitely a case of, you have to spend money to make money.
Buyers are a fickle group. They want … (2 comments)

Reston, Virgnia is a planned community located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., or as the locals call it, Northern Virgnia.
If you are planning a move  in 2011, you owe it to yourself to consider this spacious single family home. Located in the Estates of North Hills (often referred to as Round Pebble, even though it is made up of 3 streets), this colonial with a contemporary flare is located on over a 1/2 acre lot. It is private, backing to trees with a large, flat yard. You will be able to imagine yourself sipping coffee on the deck. It is … (0 comments)

northern virginia: Holidays, Weekends and other real estate time - 11/28/10 06:21 AM
The buying public falls into two categories: those who assume that a Realtor® will be available 24-7 and those who are so overly considerate that they wait to call us--even when they should. The truth is, most Realtors® work somewhere in between.
During a holiday weekend, your local Realtor® will, just like the rest of the world, spend time with friends and family. The truth is, however, we signed on to be available at the time that you have some free time--often weekends and holidays. Most of us are willing to tell our clients when we are unavailable and re-schedule for a … (5 comments)

northern virginia: Short Sale Listing Agent In Orange County, California | When To Talk To A Realtor® About A Short Sale | Short Sale Listing Agents - 11/21/10 11:49 PM
Despite all of the press about short sales, there continues to be confusion about who should consider a short sale and who will not be eligible. This post by Karen Fiddler is a well thought out essay on why (and who) to consider a short sale and how to determine the best real estate agent to help you through the process.
Her point that we are all community members and that our objective is not the 'quick cash' but rather the referral and good will that doing the 'right thing' will bring to our business is important.
Thanks for a great … (0 comments)

northern virginia: Festival of Lights at the Washington D.C. Temple Visitors' Center, 2010 - 11/12/10 12:19 AM
Yesterday I read a post by Todd Clark, Decided to take a tour of the Salt Lake Temple and wow, amazing! (A photo tour) and it reminded me that I had promised my family to do some research about the Festival of Lights show at the Washington D.C.Temple. The temple, which is visible from the Capital Beltway in Kennsington, MD, is known throughout the region for its majestic presence set above a curve in the, otherwise tedious I-495. Thinking that other families might want to go see this special event, I am providing the details below:

northern virginia: A Variety of Housing Styles and Price Points in Reston,VA - 10/10/10 05:13 AM
Reston, Virginia, a suburb of the Washington D.C. metro area, is a planned community.  The original plan for Reston included a variety of housing types to accommodate both different lifestyles and economic diversity.
Over the years, Reston has grown, and in some cases, diverged from the original plan. What remains constant, however, is that there are a variety of home styles at a different price points within the community.
The 10/0/10 Real Estate section of  The Washington Post had two different stories about homes in Reston; one features a condominium complex and the other a home that has undergone extensive remodeling.
In the 'Where We … (0 comments)

Moving to the D.C. area? Have you considered Reston, Virginia. northern virginia: The Stinky Stink Bug Problem - 09/28/10 01:32 AM
Many people have noticed a significant increase in the number of Stink Bugs in and around Virginia. These bugs, related to the sneaky bed-bugs, are native to Asia and are extremely proficent and getting into your house through very small openings. Even Pest Control companies are having a tough time getting rid of them. Some of the 'holistic' treatments I have heard discussed include: **Vacuum them and immediately discard of the bag **Order some Praying Mantes, who will eat them **Spray the outside of your house with a solution of DAWN Dishwashing Detergent (only this brand) and water. I can't guarantee … (17 comments)

northern virginia: We've Seen the Bottom and It Looks Like We Are Leaving - 09/18/10 04:14 AM
All real estate markets are local. I know there are plenty of places that are still trying to dig out from underneath the burden of foreclosures and shortsales, but in the Reston area of Northern Virginia, and many other parts of NoVa, we seem to have come through the worst of it.Prices appear to have stabilized in Northern Virginia with the Spring Market. The NVAR Monthly Report for June 2010 shows that from June 2009 to June 2010, prices were up 11%. This, of course, was likely to be impacted by the Home Buyer Tax Credit and increased demand. Inventory is … (4 comments)

northern virginia: Dr. Herbst: A Great Pediatric Dentist in Sterling, Virginia - 08/16/10 11:01 AM
All three of my children have grown up seeing Dr. Heidi Herbst, DDS, FAAPD. We started out in her little office down the street from the current location, back when the kids played in a little room that probably used to be a closet. These days the facilities are much improved, but the service and caring of the staff remains the same.My oldest (now almost 21) was three when I first took her to my dentist. He is a  pretty great guy, but my daughter was having none of it. She screamed the whole time and I finally carried her out … (1 comments)

northern virginia: Will Home Prices Stabilize or Continue Down? - 07/27/10 04:44 AM
The New York Times picked up an AP story today that contends that over the next year we will continue to see a drop in home prices of between 2%and 8%. The story says that this will be seen even in the markets that have come through the recession without too much of a negative adjustment.
Working in a market that has seen home prices go down, but has not been hit nearly as badly as many areas in the country, I wonder how much of this being driven by the press and how much is being driven by a lack … (3 comments)

Tonight's concert features  Love Seed Mama Jump, a six-piece rock band from Dewey Beach, Delaware. Their music is described as guitar-driven pop rock -- a blend of modern beats and melodic hooks delivered with powerful, impassioned vocals.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket and get there early for best seats. It is a great place to bring the kids, but you cannot bring any alcohol into the venue, although it is for sale inside. We tried to bring … (0 comments)
