Remember the story of my friend, and the impossible first-floor bathroom. Yet another challenge for this home was the staircase, which was too narrow for a handrail on both sides. So here is the solution.
Notice the double row of small door knobs going up the stairs. They take up very little room, are inexpensive, and work. Clever idea. I went up the stairs to test, and it was easy to grab hold of a knob as needed while going up or descending the stairs. There are many creative ways to help one stay in a home and make it safe! aging in place: Share That House

Have you thought about sharing a home? Have you thought about a home for multi-generations? Why? There might be many reasons such as the rapid rate of retiring baby boomers, boomerang kids, world or business travelers who don't want to leave their home vacant, college children, or seniors who want to stay and age in place in the home they love. Grandparents move in to look after their grandchildren; an older relative may move in to be cared for to eliminate the expense of retirement communities or nursing homes or a young adult child moves home after college or a divorce.

Counseling is a big part when working with Seniors. You often have family members making decisions. Grown children thinking it is best for Mom or Dad to be in condo or adult community. Sometimes they are right but sometimes it is not the right answer. I have seen couples sell their homes at the urging of others...only to reverse the situation and try to come back home. It is a huge challenge moving once must less twice. And way too exhausting for people much younger.

aging in place: What is a Forever House?

What is a Forever House? On last weeks radio show All About Real Estate, the question was asked. "What is a Forever House?"
To me a forever house is one that, if you choose, could be lived in for many years and age in place. For example the family could be raised in the house, the grandparents would have room if they visited, the children could come back from college or with their own families. It is a house that would accommodate multi-generations and everyone still feel comfortable. One such home is 3521 Autumn Drive in Pikesville (16 comments)
