upset: Maybe It's Not Important

I recently spoke with an upset friend. She wasn't upset with me or anything to do with real estate. It was a troubling situation, and she needed to vent.
It immediately reminded me of another day. It was a day when a dear lady in her eighties, mother-in-law of a dear friend, buried her husband. This was a sad day, and she had reason to be upset.
A comment was made to my friend, which was unkind, and she complained to her mother-in-law. This sweet, newly widowed lady put her hand on my friend's arm and said: "Don't let unimportant things become important."

It has been a wonderfully busy and more than a bit challenging day. Tomorrow is going to be another jam packed day with two closings. So I decided not to write a post today.
That is so against my nature that I quickly looked at my photos in my iPhone, chose the one above and made it into a graphic. I wrote a bunch of words with more photos and POOF it was gone!
That happens to to all of us at some time.
I wrote another and POOF it was gone again!!

Only Get Upset When It Can Help
When a situation is out of our control, getting upset is a total waste and...
I don't do upset.
Here's an example:
A closing has to be delayed. The buyer and seller have arranged time off from work. It's the end of the month. Everyone is inconvenienced... from the lender to the title company to the agents to the clients and to all the others who are working on a transaction. That includes movers, family members, baby sitters, employers and bosses who schedules are disrupted.

While lending my ear to a very hurt and unhappy agent about a situation regarding a "toxic" colleague, I was reminded of a time when I was wrongly accused. That was an awful feeling and before I learned I Don't Do Upset! My integrity was challenged and I was in tears. A fellow agent figured something major happened with my family. When you couple the sale with an illness, an out of town move, uprooting children, a death, a job loss, a divorce, a foreclosure, an age related move or any other life altering situation...well no wonder there is increased anxiety. upset: There Are No Emergencies in Real Estate.

As a former Registered Nurse, I really do understand what an emergency is. In the beginning of my real estate career, I received a '911' on my pager. Immediately I returned the call. It was an agent wanting to show one of my listings. When? The following Thursday.
"Why would anyone use a '911' for an appointment?" Her response.. "I wanted to make sure you got the message." That was the last time I used my pager. I stated then and still today...
There are no emergencies in real estate!
However, we have seen hysteria over so many situations, including but not limited to....termites, elevated radon levels, a failed septic system, … (35 comments)

But hey, ActiveRain is the media!
It was in the middle of one of my busiest times – three new listings which meant three blogs, three MLS entries, three website updates, copies, photos…oh heck, you all know what goes into a new listing...plus, one settlement and contracts being negotiated for two buyer clients.

Yesterday one of my favorite sellers called me, very upset. She wasn't upset with me, or that her fantastic house hasn't sold after several months. It was something that had happened in her life, and because we have become friends, and because she feels she can talk to me - she unloaded.
It immediately reminded me of another day. It was a day when a dear 80-something lady, the mother-in-law of a dear friend of mine, buried her husband. This was a terribly sad day, and she certainly had reason to be upset.
