real estate: What's Your Passion? - 05/22/11 05:09 AM
I am a firm believer in living what you love, loving what you do, and not settling for anything less than excellence.
The trick, of course, is actually achieving those goals.
Think about what you really, truly love. Typically, you do that activity well. It makes you feel exhilerated and fulfilled. But there may be that little voice in your head that says "Oh, I couldn't really do this for my life's work. It wouldn't pay me anything. It's not practical. I have  a family to think of now. I couldn't walk away from everything and start over again."
Have you … (7 comments)

real estate: Have You Written Your Week's Goals Yet? - 01/30/11 03:00 PM
It's Sunday evening...again.
This past week, I passed the Indiana Broker's exam, ordered new signs, met with a Buyer's agent, bought some office supplies, helped with homework, did laundry, interviewed a roofer/handyman, went to the grocery store, revised the budget, and did a lot of cooking and cleaning.
So why do I feel like I haven't done anything?
I'm a list maker, as is my partner. We work best when we have a tick list of things to do, to investigate, to take care of. There is nothing more satisfying to us than to check an item off the list.

real estate: 10 Top Indiana Winter Motivational Activities - 01/22/11 05:36 AM
This is becoming an annual blog topic for me. As the weather turns frigid (3 degrees) and as the landscape becomes a dirty white and the skies remain gray, it is hard to turn on the motivation. So to help me out of a not-very-tropical depression this time every year, I focus on what CAN be done, as opposed to what isn't happening right now.
10. Clean up the office
I know it sounds cliche, but you would be amazed at how this helps. Even if you keep a very neat and tidy workspace to begin with, just going through … (2 comments)

real estate: Happy New Year! - 01/15/11 06:52 PM
I was commenting just the other day how my father said that there was never a day that he dd not want to be at the clothing store he owned. At the time I was much younger but even then realized how lucky he was to be able to work at what he loved.
I am reminded of this Bible quote:
When God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work -- this is a gift of God.

real estate: IU Basketball: Why The Zeller Family Would Be Perfect Real Estate Clients - 11/12/10 04:08 AM
If you follow Indiana, Big 10, or college basketball at all then you are aware of the hype surrounding the decision of 17 year old Washington (IN) high school basketball star as to where to attend college, which also means where to bring his Top 20 bball skills. Cody has been a much favored pick of most any college program. Eventually he narrowed his decision to three great universities: Indiana, Butler, and North Carolina.
Yesterday, after his father thanked each of the schools and their coaches for their time as well as pointing out the respective strengths of the basketball  programs and … (0 comments)

real estate: Forbes.com List of Best Cities In Which To :Buy A Home: Indianapolis Is #2. Who's #1? - 07/13/10 04:13 AM
Forbes.com has recently named the 10 most affordable cities in which to buy a home.  Affordability was based in part upon the percentage of the population who could afford the median priced home in that area.
Forbes.com went even further than that raw number, however. They also looked at the costs of home ownership in the form of percentage of monthly income going towards property taxes and insurance.
And finally they projected whether the future home prices were expected to rise or fall.
Of the cities with a population of 500,000 or more, Indianapolis ranked #2.
95% of the population … (2 comments)

real estate: Economic Impact of Cultural Tourism In Central Indiana: Why The Arts Matter - 06/19/10 08:35 PM
I have posted prior blogs regarding the love my partner and I share for the Arts. It is a well recognized phenomenon that exposure to the Arts, which includes visual, performing, and literary arts, is a direct causative agent for many positive things such as increased cognitive function and increased emotional well-being.
But were you aware of the economic impact that Arts and Culture bring to a community?
According to a 2008 study by the Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana) Center for Business and Economic             Research, the number of persons in the State of Indiana employed in the Arts or … (4 comments)

real estate: Mandatory Sprinkler Systems? - 04/29/10 12:04 PM
There is a movement afoot in Indiana that would require all new construction of 1 or 2 unit residential buildings to have a fire sprinkler system installed. Depending on whether you talk to proponents or opponents, the cost of adding a sprinkler system would be anywhere from $1.61/s.f. to $6.88/s.f.

The Indiana Builders Association is solidly against this proposed legislation. The following information comes from their web site www.buildindiana.org.
Mandatory Fire SprinklersHome Builders Oppose Mandatory Fire Sprinklers...The home building industry is dedicated to the safety of the communities in which they build. Whenever changes are proposed to the building … (4 comments)

real estate: Mississippi Mayhem - 04/26/10 01:44 PM
My heart goes out to the families who have been affected by the tornado devastation in Mississippi. I grew up and still live in the midwest where tornadoes are always a threat this time of year. Does anyone know of any Realtor sponsored relief funds for these homeowners? I'm sure the Red Cross is heavily involved, as well as the state National Guard. But since we are a real estate site, and there certainly is a lot of torn up real estate right now, I would love to be aware of any Realtor sponsored aid to which we could donate

real estate: 3 Tips For Creating A Blog That Will Be Read - 04/20/10 01:51 PM
Actually, I've already given you tip #1
1. Use a number in your headline
By using numbers such as "3 Tips" or "5 Reasons" you imply that your blog will be easy to read and understand. You are conveying that you are using bullet points that will not require an in depth analysis by the reader. In this age of USA Today news, many people only want the basics.
2. Keep the headline short
This is especially true if you are sending a blog newsletter via email.
Conventional wisdom says that all subject lines should be five to eight words and no more … (28 comments)

real estate: From My Grandfather's Ledger, Part II - 04/20/10 12:05 PM
In one of my previous blog posts I told about cleaning out closets, which was one of my New Year's resolutions. In doing so, I came across a ledger that my grandfather kept.
I never knew my grandfather as he died more than 10 years before I was born. Gottlieb Klenk was born in Germany and came to America with his parents as a young boy. His was truly an American success story. The family settled in Defiance, Ohio and Gottlieb became a sheet metal worker, an entrepreneur, an inventor, a real estate investor, and a father of two boys.
His … (5 comments)

real estate: The Death of Common Sense - 04/15/10 10:41 AM
This remarkable essay was sent to me via e-mail but was unfortunately misattributed. Apparently this one makes the e-mail rounds every few months but is attributed  to everyone from Ben Franklin to George Carlin. Each time there is a slightly different version, some of which can be viewed on www.snopes.com.
Since I have long been a reader and admirer of the true author, I wanted to give Lori Borgman the credit she is due. With her permission for use on this site, I would like to introduce you to this essayist with the true common sense and Hoosier Midwest values intact. … (4 comments)

real estate: Wander Indiana - 04/15/10 09:13 AM
Several years back the great state of Indiana used "Wander Indiana" as a marketing phrase and placed it on our license plates. This was not the most popular move as many people did not care for the tag line. I was fairly neutral on it. I didn't love it; I didn't hate it.
Yesterday my partner and I were in fact wandering Indiana and it was glorious. We were in Jackson and Brown Counties which must be God's territory. The Redbuds were blooming as were every other type of flowering trees native to the hills of Southern Indiana. The sky was … (2 comments)
