Collectively called the "Pender Island Guide," these new pages give everyone considering a permanent move to Pender, as well as those just coming for a weekend visit, a one-stop-shop for Pender information.
You'll find general information such as climate and history, road maps, natural area maps, community information and links to accomodations, restaurants, weather info and community activities here on Pender -  the gem of the Southern Gulf Islands!
I have also linked my photos and virtual tour to the Pender Guide -- and of course this … (0 comments)

events: What Did You Do for Earth Hour '08? - 03/29/08 04:14 PM

Over here at our place, we had the fire burning in the wood stove.  We lit a few candles for some extra lighting, and then we got out the dice and scorecard for a few rounds of Yahtzee!
Add a beer for me and a glass of wine for my wife, and the hour passed almost too quickly...
Because we lose power more often than you city dwellers (trees blown over during windstorms can cause havoc with power lines)...we have a regular routine that we quickly pick up when the room goes dark.  The candles, wind-up lantern & radio, and headlamps are all … (3 comments)

Another one of my random photos from my Pender Island/African Photos page.  Here we have the Pender Island Highlanders performing for the Canada Day celebration.  In the background you will also see our island RCMP officer dressed in full regalia for the occasion.
It is so great to live in a small community like the one here on Pender.  Celebrations like Canada Day take on a whole different meaning when you gather with a group of friends to take some time off and enjoy each others' company -- rather than running off to the mall to get some shopping in on a … (0 comments)

events: New Year's Eve on Pender Island, BC a Resounding Success! - 01/02/08 04:32 AM
Happy New Year to all of you!
We had a great time bringing in 2008 here on Pender Island.  This year's Magic Lake Lantern Festival has been described as one of the best in its 9 year history.  This is thanks to the hard work of so many performers and volunteers.  I wish I had some pictures to post, but I was assigned to crowd control duties this year, and didn't get a chance to get my camera out.  Not to say that crowd control is a tough assignment here on Pender!  We're hardly an unruly bunch...
To see pictures of Lantern Festivals … (0 comments)

events: Pender Island, BC - Audobon Christmas Bird Count - Sat, December 15 - 12/12/07 06:13 AM
History
In 1900, American ornithologist Frank Chapman asked birders across North America to head out on Christmas Day to count the birds in their home towns and submit the results as the first "Christmas Bird Census." His suggestion has evolved into one of the largest organized birding events in the world, and a holiday tradition during the Christmas season for over 50,000 birders each year.
The Christmas Bird Count (CBC), as it is now called, is conducted in over 2000 localities across Canada, the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. These bird observations, collected during one-day field counts within defined circular … (1 comments)

events: Events on Pender Island, BC Thursday Nov. 22 to Sunday Nov. 25 - 11/22/07 05:42 AM
In my humble opinion, Pender Island, BC has got to be one of the most beautiful places on earth to live...the climate is moderate, the scenery is amazing (especially when the sun is out (like today!)) and the presence of the birds, deer, whales and other wildlife amongst all of these trees and water is truly calming to the spirt.
More photos in my photo album.
In addition, we also have a vibrant island culture, amazing community spirit and a busy social schedule to keep residents as busy as they want to be all year long.  This weekend is another example:

Come see Howard and the rest of the Dockside Realty team at Historic Hope Bay this Saturday.  Dockside is participating in this year's Rural Route Tour, a scavenger hunt style event that takes in much of the Hope Bay and Port Washington areas on North Pender Island.
As you visit each stop along the tour, you must identify the "out of place" item in each shop.  Then get your passport stamped before proceeding on to the next stop.  It's easy, fun, and a great way to see more of what Pender has to offer in the way of shopping, services and … (0 comments)
