leadership development: A NEW JOB NEEDS NEW SKILLS - 03/08/20 08:01 PM
If you are building your real estate brokerage I hope that you are not picking leaders and then setting them up for failure.
Unfortunately, this seems to happen most often by default. The most common mistake is taking an individual performer and promoting that person to supervisor without any training at all. The newly promoted supervisor still sees the jobs of the people he or she is supervising through his or her own individual performer lens. What is needed is an understanding of motivation, leadership and interpersonal skills in addition to knowledge of the job.
But it does not stop there. All leadership … (22 comments)

leadership development: ARE YOU ACCOUNTABLE FOR RESULTS? - 07/22/18 07:32 PM
If you want to have high performance you must have high accountability.  You must be accountable for the failures as well as the successes. How do you create a culture of accountability and create a high performing team? The best way to accomplish this is by motivating staff and team members to be proud to be accountable. Dwight Eisenhower said, “Leadership is getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it.”   Many times, we fear discussing results and performance because we feel we will not change behavior and we might create alienation. However, by … (21 comments)

leadership development: DO YOU HOLD YOUR TEAM ACCOUNTABLE? - 06/21/15 02:08 PM
If you are a broker, branch manager, or any type of team leader you are accountable.  To begin with you have compliance issues as well as commitments to customers and upholding the brand.  But when you have a team of independent people you will not be successful giving directives.  No, you have to motivate them.
Dwight Eisenhower said, “Leadership is getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it.”    Many times we fear having a discussion about results and performance because we feel we will not change behavior and we might create alienation. However, … (27 comments)

leadership development: WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE PETER PRINCIPLE - 06/08/14 09:43 PM
Sometimes we take actions without thinking and this results in unintended consequences.  The Peter Principle is really about unintended consequences in promotion of people in any organization.
In 1969, Lawrence Peter wrote the book The Peter Principle.  He said that whenever you have any type of organizational structure your people tend to get promoted into job they can't handle, or as he says it, they are promoted to the level of their incompetence. He noted that although this is not planned it is the unintended consequence.
Isn't is true that in any sales organization people are recognized by being promoted?  … (34 comments)

leadership development: SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE LEADERS - 11/02/13 10:32 PM
Successful people have successful habits and unsuccessful people have unsuccessful habits.  The same is true with leadership.  What are the habits of an effective leader and why are they important?   Proper business leadership is crucial to the success of any business of any size. No company can be more successful than the effectiveness of its leaders. If the head of a company lacks positive leadership qualities, he or she will be unsuccessful at motivating and leading the staff. This will not allow the entire business to impress and lure new business to their company. That said what are those traits and … (0 comments)

leadership development: LEADERSHIP IS TELLING PEOPLE WHAT TO DO BUT NOT HOW TO DO IT - 05/25/13 02:07 PM

"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."  -- Gen. George S. Patton

"Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way."
                -- Gen. George S. Patton
On this Memorial Day weekend we pay tribute to our fallen brave men and women in the armed forces.  It is also fitting to honor the great leadership lessons of our past military leaders.   It is not surprising to me that many great civilian leaders that I have known have received their leadership lessons in the US … (8 comments)

leadership development: GETTING TOP PERFORMANCE FROM YOUR TEAM - 04/06/13 10:32 PM

Most organizations do annual performance appraisals.  This process alone is one of the most universally disliked systems. Why? Appraisal systems do not focus or focus enough on two very important areas—Employee Development and Results.   Getting top performance from your team is more about motivation and inspiration than it is about attaching blame.
In order to have a high performing team you need to look in the mirror and ask, “Am I a person who inspires and encourages others?”    Why not take this challenge:  ask your co-workers – specifically your direct reports and your boss (if you don’t have co-workers – … (0 comments)

leadership development: IT IS THE PEOPLE WHO ACHIEVE RESULTS - 03/17/13 04:43 AM
What results do you need to achieve success?  Do you need more sales or more profits?  Do you need to update your marketing or create marketing?  Do you need to update or create a better infrastructure in order to get to the next level?  Regardless of how you answer these questions one fact is abundantly clear.  It is the people who achieve results.  That is true for any size organization and it is also true if you are a sole practitioner.   Let’s start with you and your personal leadership.
Ask yourself these questions:
·       Am I the best I can be?

leadership development: ARE YOU A BORN LEADER? - 08/31/12 10:19 AM
Have you ever heard someone describe a leader that they admire as a “born leader”?   But really, what is a born leader?  Are leaders born?   If I were to ask you to tell me what qualities you think of when you think of a great leader each of you would probably answer with totally different qualities and attributes.
Let’s take two military leaders from World War II.  George Patton and Dwight Eisenhower were both considered to be great leaders.  Their attributes and their personalities, however, were very different.  Patton was in the face of his troops.  On the other hand Eisenhower … (3 comments)

leadership development: Be A Juggernaut of Goal Achievement - 01/15/12 04:00 PM
Setting goals is one of the most important keys to achieving success. Studies have shown that the most successful people are the ones who have specific, written goals.

Setting a goal is not like a New Year's resolution. That is just a wish. Just wishing and hoping for something isn't going to make it happen. Setting a goal is having a target to shoot for and a plan to get there.

When planning your goals, choose which categories you would like for your goals. Establish the time frame. They could be lifetime goals, 10 year, 5 year, 1 year, 6 month, 3 month, … (5 comments)

leadership development: Is Employee Disengagement Hurting Your Business? - 12/01/11 03:57 PM
Based on the current business environment it really has become an employer's market.

Employees are much less likely to change roles or companies based on fewer job opportunities and fear of the unknown. Many employees have made the decision that there is more security staying in their current role even if their company made some cutbacks. Employers currently have the upper hand but that won't last for long. As the business environment continues to achieve positive traction and new opportunities present themselves, disengaged employees will begin looking elsewhere. How many employees in your company have mentally quit and are … (1 comments)

leadership development: HOW TO KEEP YOUR EMPLOYEES AND KEEP THEM ENGAGED - 09/25/11 01:29 PM
If you run a business, manage a team of people, or are charged with human resources in your organization you know how important it is to retain your best people.  So why do so many employee leave, or worse, why do they stay and become a drag on the organization?

Here is a sobering fact.  Employees do not leave companies, they leave supervisors.  Many supervisors believe that if only the pay and fringe benefits were better their best employees would stay.  I would not deny the compensation is important.  However, people who are truly engaged with their company and their team have … (6 comments)
