team leadership in westchester ny: WHAT TYPE OF LEADERSHIP DO YOU PROVIDE? - 08/15/21 08:20 PM
If there is great success the credit is given to the leader. Likewise, if there is a problem, or worse, a disaster the leader is blamed. Harry Truman had a sign on his desk that said, “The Buck Stops Here.” Leaders set the tone, and direction, and mode the behaviors. They lead by example. Positive results are the result of positive leaders. Show me an organization that functions very well, and I can show you a positive engaged leader. I recently asked a group of employees what was wrong with their company. They replied, “We need positive leadership. We need leadership … (27 comments)

team leadership in westchester ny: GREAT REAL ESTATE TEAMS DON'T HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT - 12/01/19 08:50 PM

Your real estate organization is only as good as your people. Great people and great teams do not happen by accident. Creating a successful team requires right actions by the leadership.   There are two very important actions that must be taken by team leaders. First, you must start with the right people and these people must share your values. But then leadership has the challenge of retaining those high performers by keeping them engaged and producing results. Engaged teams will lead to loyal customers and loyal customers will lead to a sustainable real estate business. In our business climate it is … (40 comments)

team leadership in westchester ny: HOW WELL DO YOU MANAGE? - 01/20/19 07:11 PM

If you are a broker owner or if you are head of a team you have a management responsibility.  You also must be a leader. As manager you are guiding and controlling and as leader you are visioning, modeling, and motivating.
In the previous times the role of a manager was not that complex. The manager oversaw what people did. People performed or were fired. This traditional boss is no longer effective and no longer welcome. Management today is more complex.
As manager you are responsible for the performance of your team and your business. The buck stops with you. However, that … (33 comments)

team leadership in westchester ny: DO THE PEOPLE ON YOUR REAL ESTATE TEAM COLLABORATE? - 10/30/16 01:06 PM

More is not necessarily more when is comes to a real estate office.  Just this last week I encountered a broker that believes this but his office's reputation does not bear that out.  What will turn things around?  Becoming an authentic leader and encouraging a collaborative team will turn thing around.
According to a Harvard professor, William George effective leaders are authentic leaders. Authentic leaders are self-aware, practice their values and principles, seek criticism and “stay grounded.” Above all, they empower others to become leaders themselves.
Strong leaders have courage to challenge the status quo and point out failures in the organization. They … (48 comments)

team leadership in westchester ny: YOU CHOOSE YOUR OWN PATH - CHOOSE WISELY - 11/15/15 08:45 AM
You are free to choose whatever path you wish to take. You can choose a safe and easy path which will yield average success and that may be fine. Or you can choose to enter the unknown which will yield risk but also more reward. Although this path is filled with risks and uncertainty you also have the greatest opportunity to break out and insure your success along this path. Along this less traveled path you will grow and become stronger. What will it take for you to choose the less traveled path?
I was recently coaching a Westchester County NY business … (24 comments)

team leadership in westchester ny: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE WORK TEAM FAILS? - 10/11/15 11:51 AM
What do you think of this statement? If all of the students fail the exam might the fault be with the teaching?
Like students in a classroom your team may be under performing because you and your team are on different pages.  I have found that the reason a team is not achieving can usually be traced back to the leadership.
Now before you get upset with that statement I have some good news.  You can change this.  You can become a focused leader who empowers engaged team members who in turn create loyal customers leading to growth and success.
Let’s … (23 comments)

team leadership in westchester ny: IT TAKES INDIVIDUALS TO MAKE A TEAM - 03/15/15 10:50 AM
A team is only as good as its weakest link.  As leader of a team you need to make sure that there are no weak links.  The Westchester County Businesses that I coach do not work on strengthening those weak links.  No, they work on leveraging each individual's strengths.  They insist on having the right team member in the right job.  If a person is wrong for one job that person could be perfect for another job.  Many different strengths make a team.  The combination of these  different strengths creates a high performing team.
Everyone has talents and non-talents. A person’s non talent … (38 comments)

team leadership in westchester ny: EMPOWER YOUR TEAM TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS - 02/08/15 11:01 AM
Let me ask a question.  Is there any other reason to create a team other than to grow your business?  If you want to grow your business by growing your team you must empower your team to act independently.  That sounds so simple and it is.  In fact, those brokers and owners who have been giving their team the tools to act independently are growing much more rapidly than those who are creating roadblocks by holding too much control or not training and developing their team.  Clearly, empowerment of the team creates better outcomes.
Unfortunately, some owners and managers find it … (27 comments)

team leadership in westchester ny: WHY DOSEN'T EVERYONE ON YOUR TEAM TAKE OWNERSHIP - 08/17/14 09:32 PM
Recently I was talking with the leader of a brokerage in Northern Westchester County NY.  He has brought on many sales agents but not all seem to be working out.  He claims that they don't take ownership of their area and that they lack initiative. “Unless I point it out to them they don't take the first step. They don't do it themselves.” I asked the owner to give me an example.   “Well,” he said, “I have given them detailed directions of exactly what they must do but they don't follow my directions.” “Wait a minute,” I said, “Didn’t you just … (21 comments)
