This year, Huntsville Mobile Notary celebrated its third anniversary. As a business owner, this was no small accomplishment. According to the Small Business Association, most small businesses fail within the first five years for a variety of reasons. I would attribute my "success" to three things: determination, God's blessings, and diversification. And not necessarily in that order. I want to write about diversifying my business. At least once I month I receive a phone call or an email from a notary new to the area or new to the loan signing business, inquiring about how to get started and how to be successful. It happens so often that I usually forward a copy of an old email that repeats the same information over and over again. It saves me time and the information in the email is valid. Well....after more than two years in the business I think it is time for me to trash that email and ask myself if my advice has changed over the (7 comments)

I was at my last notary appointment for the day and was looking forward to the weekend. This would be a quick appointment - one form; one signor; a piece of cake. But when the customer presented me with his Driver's License I froze. The name on the License matched the name on the form that needed my notary stamp, but the photo did not look anything like the man seated in front of me. Was he an imposter? Was this my first case of I.D. theft? I looked up at the man and then back down at the license in (2 comments)

When was the last time you checked a Notary's credentials? Last year? Never? If not, you should and it's easier than you think. In Alabama a person can access the Secretary's of State website (http://arc-sos.state.al.us/CGI/sosnot01.mbr/input) and find out if a notary public who is about to notarize adoption papers, medical release forms (or any other important legal document), is authorized to do so. The Secretary of State Inquiry System is a database that contains the name, address and commission information for all Alabama Notaries. You will find a notary's start and end date for his commission, as well as the names of the counties (2 comments)
