atlanta home inspection: Is Your Refrigerator Running? Well go catch it... - 02/18/14 02:31 AM
I was thinking of this silly old joke and it sparked a blog entry! Go figure. You just never know when inspiration will hit, do you?
We pass by our refrigerator numerous times daily as we enter and exit rooms throughout the home and also as we enter and leave our home. We open our refrigerator many times a day, also. However, we don't often stop to consider whether or not we are running our refirgerator at a maximum efficiency level.
Did you know that at 31.6 cu. ft. french door refrigerator … (3 comments)

atlanta home inspection: Why the For Sale sign is Still in your Front Yard - 11/19/12 02:09 AM
Why the FOR SALE sign is Still in Your Front Yard There are many reasons a home may remain on the market for a substantial amount of time. The Atlanta home inspections team is familiar with differenct conditions that may prevent a home from selling. If you are concerned about the composition, sturcture, systems, and overall make-up of the home, consider having the home inspected so that upgrades can be enacted.  Also, the economy of course, has a great deal to do with how quickly homes are selling in specific areas.
We have provided a list of other reasons below.

atlanta home inspection: Conserving energy with a vacuum cleaner? - 09/06/12 02:37 AM
When I vacuum my house it requires extra energy – especially after a long day of inspecting homes in the Atlanta area! However, over the years I have figured out a way to actually conserve energy while using the vacuum. (And, no, I don’t mean that I make my wife tackle the chore- although sometimes she does and I appreciate that!)
An issue that is commonly found during the home inspection process is the accumulation of dryer lint. A good way to rid lint from the interior of the clothes dryer is to detach the vacuum hose, and give the dryer … (5 comments)

atlanta home inspection: Unruly Shrubbery Woes Unearthed by The Atlanta Home Inspector - 09/20/11 05:17 AM
During Atlanta Home Inspections a common find for us, is overgrown or untended shrubbery. In these instances, the unruliness of the shrub can cause a host of issues.
When shrubbery grows too close to your home's siding, moisture collects and can cause deterioration. Algae, mildew and mold growth can also occur. Of course, there is also the possibility that you are providing a smorgasboard for wood destroying organisms, such as termites.
It is also a good idea, to keep shrubbery from growing into your gutters or downspout systems. The overgrown limbs can impede the process of proper drainage.
It is true … (3 comments)

atlanta home inspection: A Lovely Lady Catches the Eye of The Atlanta Home Inspector - 09/02/11 05:10 AM

We spotted this lovely lady dangling not so very far away from her
web during a  Canton home inspection.  The red dots indicate that she is
indeed a Black Widow. Also, due to the grape shape that her belly has,
we would say she is full of eggs.
Don’t let her beauty fool you- she is venomous!  Even though she is shy , she prefers the night life. Don’t take her by surprise, you might get bitten.
Some symptoms of Black Widow Bite include, but are not limited to: excessive sweating, swollen eyelids, abdominal pains, and sore muscles. … (5 comments)

atlanta home inspection: When is a Vent Boot Not a Vent Boot? Let's Ask the Atlanta Home Inspector. - 08/08/11 06:58 AM
Atlanta home inspector.      There is nothing quite as soothing as raindrops on a tin roof. Perfect weather, perfect ambiance, all that’s needed is a good book. Unless, of course the tin roof leaks. Then, all you need are several buckets.

At this recent inspection, the Atlanta home inspector found an exposed vent boot. Gaping as it is, you could safely rename it a funnel.

Unfortunately, the damage can go unnoticed for years. The water that travels down the exposed plumbing vent follows the vent pipe inside of the … (3 comments)

atlanta home inspection: Warning: Could Cause Injury or Death. A disclaimer by the Atlanta Home Inspector. - 07/22/11 04:11 AM
Safety tags are affixed to products for a reason. Even though they seem common sense.  For instance, we were inspecting a home recently, that had an issue with the garage door sensor. We noted the issue and in our report language we explain the danger to children and animals, and reveal the fact that injury or death can occur. The agent called asking why we would say such a terrible thing. The agent warned us that this type of language is alarming.  All I know is that YES. It is alarming, and should be alarming. That is why we disclose it. … (7 comments)

atlanta home inspection: Is Your Deck a Safety Hazard? - 07/20/11 05:28 AM

The air smells like barbequed goodness as you, with beverage of your choice and assorted side dishes on plate, ready to sit down on the last patio chair. The one that just seems to be sad and lonely without you. As you make your way across the crowded deck, the anticipation of good food and good times comes to a crashing halt as you crash to the deck floor. Someone should have hammered in those nails and sanded those splinters!

However, you are lucky, because  the deck could have fallen from the home!

atlanta home inspection: The Atlanta Home Inspector is Impressed With Flashing - 06/30/11 06:22 AM
http://www.ihihomeinspections.com
It isn't everyday that you hear a compliment like, "Nice flashing", and your mind doesn't travel somewhere it shouldn't... you know what I'm saying. However, in this instance the compliment is totally  innocent and positively directed at an innovative roofer. This rare find deserves accolades because it helps water shed and protects the integrity of the chimney.

atlanta home inspection: Duct Tape Shingles! Now the Atlanta Home Inspector Has Seen it All... - 06/28/11 03:49 AM
Ok, so I guess most of us have heard that old adage that "duct tape fixes everything". However, most of us don't take that legend as truth. Surprisingly, somebody must have lived by these words!  I guess they did take special care to match the tape to the already present shingles. I do have to scratch my head and wonder what made this a  "good idea".
This patchwork would never have been detected from the ground. Surprisingly, there was more than one "shingle" on the roof that was found.

atlanta home inspection: Above the Gutter With Atlanta Home Inspector - 06/20/11 04:37 AM
Above the GutterYour home doesn't stop at the gutter. So why should your home
inspection!
Peering over the top of his ladder into the leaf strewn, pine needle filled
Aluminum gutter, the inspector will note that a good cleanning is due.
Then he will hop off the ladder, tip his hat to signify the end of this
inspection, and stroll to his truck, whistling all the way to the bank. This
inspector didn't so much as mention the wrinkles, punctures or blisters-
unless he was talking about his hands from carrying that ladder around
that he barely uses. What else did … (4 comments)

atlanta home inspection: How Hot is the Atlanta Home Inspector? - 06/17/11 07:10 AM
I bet the title made you curious, didn't it? Come on, admit it!   In all seriousness, though, the heat has been hot and hotter in the North Metro Atlanta area.  Even though the degrees are rising, we still climb onto 99% of all roofs to conduct our inspections, even if that means enduring temperatures over 150 degrees. If you don't believe us, we have the proof right here!   And this second picture... well that's an egg. (In case you were wondering if was hot enough to fry one or not)

Ok, the egg really didn't fry on the roof and no … (1 comments)

atlanta home inspection: Green Sweat doesn't just drip from the Incredible Hulk . The Atlanta Home Inspector explains. - 06/09/11 05:06 AM
Most all of us are familiar with the Incredible Hulk. We know when he says, "Hulk Smash", the closeup on his face reveals drips of hulky green sweat. However, most all of us are not aware of other occurances of dripping green sweat.  So, you might ask,  What is this and why is it important? This might just appear to be an incredibly colorful pipe, but there is a reason for the green tinted discoloration. Above this furnace, there is an airconditioning pipe without insulation. What happens, is that the copper piping will sweat when uninsulated. When copper sweats, the liquid produced is … (2 comments)

atlanta home inspection: Why we crawl around underneath your home by the Atlanta Home Inspector - 06/06/11 06:54 AM
It doesn't matter how well kept your home may be, there can still be issues underneath. Simply because most people do not enter this underground area, issues can go undetected. So it is a good idea to get someone who will crawl around underneath your home when performing an inspection.
One of the major aspects of the inspection includes the "span" system. If the beams and joists, which are the primary components that cross back and forth under your home and hold your floors and walls in place, are not spanning the proper distance or are not following specific scale or … (0 comments)

atlanta home inspection: Atlanta Home Inspector says thank you to Colonel Brown - 06/03/11 05:14 AM
http://www.ihihomeinspections.com, David Lelak.
My goal today was to upload video commentary and testimonials for further use. Suffice it to say, that I have succeeded in doing so. While I was perusing the testimonial videos, I found one from Colonel Brown that had not been processed and I really have no explanation why it was still sitting there untouched. I am sharing his video today, because  I am thankful, proud and missing my son, Daniel, who is now away at military training.  I know I missed Memorial Day for this post, but the honor to our men and women in uniform should be the same … (0 comments)
