miami shores: Miami Real Estate in the open - 11/10/07 04:04 AM
Miami Real Estate is changing everyday and those of us blogging are at the forefront and are viewed as “trendy”.
Robert Scoble and Shel Israel shared a breakthrough quote (in their book "Naked Conversations") by The New York Times editorial (August 5, 2005) which really puts blogging into perspective:
“It’s natural enough to think of the growth of the blogosphere as a merely technical phenomenon. But it’s also a profoundly human phenomenon, a way of expanding and, in some sense, reifying the ephemeral daily conversation that humans engage in. Every day the blogosphere captures a little more of the strange … (31 comments)

miami shores: Miami Country Day School Walk for Cancer - Miami Shores, FL - 10/27/07 01:47 PM
The goal for this year's Miami Country Day School Walk for Cancer  was $50,000.  As of the preliminary tally, Miami Country Day School had raised over
Can we say wow!  I was helping The Heidi Hewes Woman's Cancer Association with the counting of the money and we all had goose bumps!
Those kids worked so hard and everyone should be so proud!  You could hear the kids cheering in the loud-speaker "Do it for Harry!"  The walk this year is dedicated to Harry Greenberg, a senior at MCDS who has recently lost his leg to cancer.
To think that all that money … (24 comments)

miami shores: Miami Country Day's Walk for Cancer Assembly - 10/10/07 12:09 PM
I had the pleasure of attending Miami Country Day School's Walk for Cancer Assembly.  We were invited to attend because the proceeds from this walk are given to The Miami Shores Heidi Hewes Chaper of the Woman's Cancer Association of U.M. (To which I am co-president together with Tammy Austin).

Last year Country Day raised over $45,000 and this year their goal is $50,000.  All funds raised go directly to cancer research.
The whole school attended the assembly.  The Spartan Cheerleaders kicked off the assembly and were followed by numerous speakers including Walk Chairs and 2 cancer survivors.  They even had a … (20 comments)

miami shores: Lime Paints - what do you paint historic homes with? - 08/27/07 03:40 PM
There are several key factors or elements seen in  Mediterranean Revival Architecture.  I have told you about the style and what makes it special, I have also gone into detail about Historic Cuban Tile.  Now I will describe the type of paint that is most appropriate for these homes - LIME-BASED PAINTS.
I don't know about you, but when I think Mediterranean, I think of Venice (OK, it's the Adriatic sea.....let's not get technical here.....but I'm doing this to make a point about COLOR).
In the Mediterranean (and surrounding areas), it was customary to paint stucco facades with lime based paints.  Lime, … (56 comments)

I cannot believe we have less than one month left of school!  Planning for summer camps for the kids can be very stressful because you don't even know where to begin.
Since we do have 3 kids of different ages, we have done lots of research on summer camps in or close to Miami Shores for our own children and wanted to share this information to make it easier for local families to find activities for their kids.  Please keep in mind that we are not sponsoring any of these camps and do advise that you do your own additional research. miami shores: Miami Shores sends a piece of home overseas to US troops - 05/06/07 05:49 AM
Some of you may have read my post on Girl Scout Cookies for our Military which I wrote back in March. I wanted to come back and post the awesome pictures I received yesterday.
I don't want to reiterate what I said in that post but it was about sending Girl Scout Cookies to our soldiers stationed in Iraq.   Go back and check out the photos on that post, the expression of pride in those kids' faces is priceless.
Major Buzzard and Company finally received their loot of cookies.  Here's 2 pictures they shared with us.
I have to tell you that this touched … (17 comments)

miami shores: Miami - safe or unsafe - 04/26/07 02:25 PM
Some of you have commented about "Miami's safety" and it is a subject I would have never come up with on my own.  I remember living in Tallahasse, Florida my first year of college and people asking me with a look of shock and surprise "You are from Miami?  Wow, that must be scary!", or "The furthest South I have been in Florida has been Orlando, I would never go to Miami".
We even had a customer call us from our website, looking for waterfront property with Marina for his 60' yacht ask us if the buildings we were recommending were in … (49 comments)

miami shores: Historic Preservation in Miami Shores - Mediterranean Revival architecture - 04/19/07 09:00 AM
A few years ago, while a board member of the Miami Shores Historic Preservation Board, I created, with the help of other board members, an educational brochure for our community.  The brochure included the image shown as well as a brief history of Miami Shores and its development back in the 1920's.
The style popular in South Florida in the 1920's is now called "Mediterranean Revival" which was influenced by the architecture of the countries bordering the Mediterranean coast, namely Spain, France, Italy and North Africa.  Historic architecture in Miami Shores is comprised of mostly Mediterranean Revival homes and we thought it … (34 comments)

miami shores: Why isn't my house selling? - 04/18/07 02:50 PM

Here in Miami Shores I get asked this question a lot?  Why aren't houses selling? Well....Today Rick came up with this great article in MSN Money called 6 Reasons Houses Don't Sell by (yes, it was chuckles please). Make sure you read the article, our own Lenn Harley was quoted!
The 6 Reasons Houses Don't Sell, according to are:
1.  Your home is overpriced
2.  Your home doesn't "show" well
3.  You're in a bad location
4.  You have a lousy listing agent (I thought this one was a little harsh but really Laughed!)
5.  You are battling competition or market conditions
6.  You have ineffective marketing
All sellers should be looking at this article, … (22 comments)

miami shores: Rick & Ines - kicking off Project Blogger - 04/11/07 08:46 AM
I will kick off Project Blogger week doing something we are not supposed to do.  I hope Paul Chaney doesn't come knocking on my door screaming "ARE YOU NUTS....HAVEN'T YOU LEARNED ANYTHING???"  (For those of you that don't know him....he is truly a Southern Gentleman and would never do that).
Your posts should never be about YOU, YOU, YOU!  They should engage the reader.  Because a lot of people don't know us, I thought it would be appropriate to introduce ourselves in order to make this trip down Project Blogger a little easier to comprehend and digest.
Truth be told, Rick does … (55 comments)

miami shores: Miami Shores family sends Girl Scout Cookies to our Military - UPDATED - 03/25/07 02:52 AM
A lot of us may not agree with the war, others are very enthusiastic (I have not met the first).  But the truth is that whether or not we agree, it doesn't change the fact that our military, our friends, our neighbors...... are risking their lives for our country.  We need to show our support in every way we can and I wanted to share with you what some dear friends have done.
This year we thought we were receiving the customary "girl scout cookie plea" from some Miami Shores real estate clients and friends, but it was very different.  This was … (21 comments)
