hamedia group: Jon & Inna Hardison...Welcome to the Summit Home Consultants Team! - 01/18/12 04:25 PM
No, I'm not reblogging this because it's a kudos from a client, but because I am truly humbled at the sentiments voiced. Most of the time when I am on the phone giving advice of various kinds, I feel like a schmucky parent who has to say "no" to their kids far too many times...  I wonder if the person on the other end is tuning out, and will cut me off with "I just want leads" sentiments.  The ones who delve a bit deeper into how they want to do business, the ones who are in the RE space for … (9 comments)

hamedia group: Building relationships that matter & why I may not #follow you - 09/29/11 12:34 PM
Few people who know me well would describe me as overly social. I am, in my non virtual life, an introvert of sorts. I tend not to enjoy small talk, in fact, it drives me crazy. I will rarely start a conversation with a stranger or even with people I know, and I wear a defensive armor of sorts whenever I am on an airplane, train or bus – a book of some kind that I may have no interest in reading, but I carry it with me as a signal that I am un-approachable.
It’s not that I am shy … (73 comments)

hamedia group: Do consumers think Real Estate is a Relationship business? - one consumer's perspective... - 09/16/11 06:50 AM
Fireworks broke out these last few weeks with Chris Smith (Inman News Evangelist) publishing his Real Estate is no longer a relationship business piece.  As expected, not only did it start a conversation, but resulted in a few rebuttal posts, (which are linked to at the end of this blog), and a few comments that were downright nasty.  I was paying attention to the conversation as it developed, from the sidelines, mostly, and here are my takeaways, as a consumer of any good or service, not just real estate.
What Chris was saying, in essence, was that he, as a consumer, doesn’t … (30 comments)

hamedia group: I am an iPad. Before that - I was a doodler. Et toi? - 09/01/11 06:49 AM
What was your life like before there were blogs, and tweets and klout scores? How did you spend your days and evenings pre-FaceBook and Google Plus, and is there anything about the old you that you miss?
I’ve been thinking about mine, lately. There was a time I was very much anti-computers, even if used only for typing. It took me years to learn to compose something on a keyboard instead of a notepad.
Cleaning out my garage the other day gave some clues as to why I was always much more comfortable with pen and paper than a gadget of … (5 comments)

hamedia group: My Anti-Social Resume - 08/04/11 03:55 PM
With so much talk on how all of us should be engaging on various social platforms, I figured it's time to introduce the social and anti-social me.  Your thoughts are alway appreciated.:-)
Introduction Inna Hardison #Eav(cHAMEDIA) trades for 28.65 a share, with 22 shareholders.  Her Klout is 58. (ok, it was 58 when she started writing this post).  She can be found on FourSquare, Yelp, Trulia, AR, Branchout, Twitter @innahamedia, FaceBook, Stik, Triberr, Spotify, Google Plus and quite possibly a few dozen other places on the net she’s forgotten about.
Combining all these influences, her reach should extend to some 20K … (24 comments)

hamedia group: Disconnecting for the weekends - for the circles that truly matter - 07/22/11 04:08 PM
I’ve been rather hip and popular lately. I got the G+ circles with folks whose names or faces I don’t recognize sharing stuff with me on Google Plus, I’ve got FB friends and fans, twitter followers (although I hardly ever tweet), LinkedIn invites and all sorts of other nifty things that ought to make one feel popular, liked, admired or whatever the emotion of the moment we are supposed to feel. Just a few years ago, the only distractions from my work and my life came in via my Outlook, and if I didn’t have it opened, I could spend all … (15 comments)

hamedia group: I am begging you, when it comes to Content – please Don’t JUST DO IT! - 06/15/11 11:59 AM
No matter how many gurus, coaches, fellow bloggers or real estate agents tell you that you must. The recent featured post by Jermey Blanton prompted this post (and one of only two dissenting comments), so for those of you who missed it – go read it.  The gist, if I may, amounts to advice to just jump in and start outputting content, the more crap you write, the better you’ll get, and someone human or bot is bound to find you eventually.  The only bad content is content that doesn’t get written, and so forth.  Yes, I am over-simplifying, hence, read … (35 comments)

hamedia group: A Before and After Case Study - WordPress real estate sites... - 06/04/11 09:56 AM
WordPress, by virtue of being a pretty nifty platform, contains almost a promise of magic. If you go with a WordPress real estate site – everything in the world will be just fine, so they say. I love WordPress for many reasons, and yes we do build real estate websites almost exclusively in WordPress, but the moment at which the platform (any platform) is looked at as a panacea for all ills, is the moment I become wary. See, WordPress cannot teach one sound design practices, anymore than any other combination of zeros and ones can. Nor can WordPress be relied … (21 comments)

hamedia group: Chasing your competition - a position of weakness - 05/03/11 03:11 AM
No matter what business you run, chances are you watch for what your competition is doing.  You want to know what they charge, how they advertise, what their clients think of them and you want to better them.  You believe, not unjustifiably, that if you stop paying attention to the Joneses, they’ll beat you at your game…
There is definitely value in knowing and paying attention.  That’s how we determine what to charge and what we can do better.  But what if we looked at our business as if we had absolutely no competition, only a great product or service that … (13 comments)

hamedia group: New shiny objects vs great neighbors… - 04/28/11 03:42 PM
My parents had a guest this Easter – a woman who was our neighbor for many years when we were kids.  There was no such thing as a babysitter where I grew up, so after daycare or school my brother and I were on our own until our parents got home from work.  This woman, whom I now call Tasha, was our safety blanket of sorts… She lived one short flight of stairs up from us, and if anyone needed to call an ambulance or put out a fire, she was the one we were supposed to run to for help, … (14 comments)

hamedia group: Do Something - 04/24/11 04:18 AM
It’s Saturday.  Two dozen eggs waiting to be painted old school, with onion skins, by our ten year-old remind me that tomorrow is Easter.  Not being a religious sort, for me, Easter has always been the beginning of Spring.  There is shiny new-ness to the brand new leaves on my few garden dwellers.  There are bugs of all kinds climbing out of the ground and making babies.  The whippoorwills sing louder than they did just a week ago, and my giant live oak tree in the front yard has been hosting more and more bright red cardinals as the days go by.

hamedia group: Website Design For Real Estate - What to look for first, an intro... - 04/19/11 02:50 AM

Real estate web design seems all the rage now.  You hit Google and hundreds of pages show up with various real estate web design firms that that weren’t there a year or even six months ago, and new ones coming daily.  With so much stuff out there, what should you be looking for in your real estate website design and service provider?
Here is a very short list that should make it easier for you to narrow the very long list down some:
real estate website platforms and hosting: Ownership: This should be the very first thing you look at.  There are essentially two categories … (6 comments)

hamedia group: Your seo might be great, but are they staying beyond the first click? - 04/11/11 01:51 AM

With all the articles on the subject of how to rank at the top of Google for your real estate website, it’s hard not to pay attention and harder still not to engage in this bit of competitive climb to the top.  For some, it becomes an addiction of sorts that they are able to feed all on their own, others spend thousands of dollars for an SEO Blogging Coach to get them there.
Let’s say whatever SEO tactics you’ve employed are actually working and you come up.  Are you able to keep your buyers on your site for longer than a few seconds?  Do … (59 comments)

hamedia group: If you steal from me, you will be exposed, & I’ll spread the word! - 01/05/11 07:49 AM
There has been quite a bit of discussion lately, yet again, on plagiarism and content theft and the like.  People tend to handle this sort of thing differently, if and when it happens to them.  I’d like to let you all know how I will handle it, should I find our work or content in places where it does not belong.
Some of you are aware of a recent incident of this type, which has been since resolved to our satisfaction.  I had then stated publically that I will not sit silent, or go through the trouble of contacting the guilty … (13 comments)

hamedia group: Happy Birthday Papa Jon!!! - 01/01/11 11:15 AM

Note: today is Jon Zolsky's birthday.  He happens to be my dad.  This small tribute is one of the few ways I have of saying Thank You.
When I was little, I thought that trees made the wind that made them sway just so, and when the black silhouettes of birds, outlined sharply against the red of the setting sun, were dipped in wispy fog of clouds, it was but a secret communion of the birds and the trees foreshadowing some magic occurrence, like thunder and lightning, or the kind of rain that would make for the most fantastic bounty … (54 comments)

hamedia group: Do You OWN the Back End? 7 questions to ask your Web Provider - 12/29/10 04:55 AM

Seven questions you NEED to ask your provider, before you purchase your new real estate website:
In comments to one of my recent posts, the discussion took off in the direction of control and ownership of design and web materials, so I thought I’d address the issue of ownership as well as a few other things I believe are important when it comes to purchasing a web design service.  Most compare features on the basis of the number of plugins, design styles and inherent SEO capabilities, but don’t delve in beyond that, when making their purchasing decisions.  I think it’s … (10 comments)

hamedia group: Before and after. Introducing a few new web projects - shameless self promotion post. - 11/20/10 03:03 AM
Wanted to share a few recent projects we did with my Active Rain peeps.  Feedback, of course, is appreciated.

Charlotte-eba.com for Julie Tuggle.  She’s had her old site since the early 90s or thereabouts, and while it was loaded with content, it was a difficult to navigate, outside of it being somewhat of a pain for Julie to maintain.  The original was built in Dreamweaver, which means FTP uploads and HTML knowledge were required to make even the slightest changes.  We designed a fully custom WordPress site that we think is pretty simple to figure out for a consumer, and … (28 comments)

hamedia group: Ten easy fixes for your broken business. Just DO it. - 09/07/10 09:24 AM
[POST UPDATED]
This post is inspired by Broker Bryant.
My apologies for the title.  I don’t know if your business is broken or if you perceive it as such, but since you are now reading it, I’ll assume that it could be better.
This post is my experiment in keeping things simple for once, as I am told most of you don’t have the time or the patience to wade through dissecting so many words to glean one or two nuggets of wisdom.  So here goes my ten-step program for anyone who is either ballsy enough or desperate enough to … (72 comments)

hamedia group: Save some money on your next direct mail campaign - for my Active Rain Friends Only. - 06/22/10 05:40 AM
Judging by lots of comments on Barbara Todaro’s featured post on direct mail, a lot of you at the very least are toying with the idea of this back to basics prospecting method.  Barbara has been doing this for many years, and is consistently generating results, and the statistics quoted in her post are enviable.  Of course, the dedication and commitment of capital to those monthly mailings is something to contend with as well.

The biggest stumbling block nowadays with this sort of marketing is the expense associated with it, whether factual or perceived.  I’d like to give you … (37 comments)
