As a mountain resort town, Jackson Hole has a high cost of living. It's expensive to live here, primarily because housing is (or was) so expensive, and because you can't actually grow food here. We do brew really good beer though. But I digress. My last blog rambled a bit about hitting cats with a dead Realtor® and about how easy that was here, because there are so many of us. Cut your own Christmas Tree! For $5, you can get a Forest Service permit to cut down a 12' tree. With Jackson surrounded by literally millions of acres of National Forest, getting a Christmas tree is a family event here in snow country. This year, by early December, the snow was already too deep to go to our usual stomping grounds to look for a Christmas tree. This historic Jackson Hole building, formerly known as The Roundup, was sold on February 11, and the new owner has wasted no time renovating the building. The interior has been completely gutted, and with a lucky break in the weather, the roof was completely torn off yesterday. Everyone hopes the clear weather holds, since the new roof trusses don't arrive til next week. If not, they'll be shoveling snow off of those hardwood floors! Here's another tidbit of Jackson real estate history. This building is located on the corner of Willow and East Hansen in east Jackson, but it started life as a schoolhouse on West Broadway where New York Subs (another Jackson Hole favorite!) is now located. After the schoolhouse was moved, the building was home to Wind River Herb Factory, and then was the home to The Yoga Room, operated by Margot Snowden. At our Rotary lunch meeting today, our guest speaker started out by saying "It's cool to be noticed." That struck me as such an innocent and revealing comment, and such a true one as well. The speaker was a high school girl being recognized for her hard work in overcoming a difficult family situation and doing well in school. Teton County commissioners intend to extend a moratorium on new housing developments in the county. The moratorium was enacted in May 2008 and is set to expire at the end of December, but will now likely be renewed until July 1, 2009 or when the new Jackson Hole/Teton County Comprehensive Plan is updated, whichever is sooner. The debate over whether to allow/encourage new development or close the door on increased population has long been contentious in Jackson Hole. Here's another project idea for your Rotary club. Every year our club mans the Salvation Army buckets at Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Salvation Army provides the buckets and bells, and club members sign up for one hour shifts to ring the bell. We ring the bell on Saturday and Sunday afternoons/evenings on the most popular shopping weekend days of the holidays. This season especially, the Salvation Army needs the help and funds. The Town of Jackson and surrounding county (Teton) have been struggling with growth issues for years. The raw beauty and recreational opportunities of our valley continue to attract more and more people, where housing is limited by the geography and the fact that 97% of the land in the county is owned by federal, state, or local government. Demand for housing far exceeds supply, and prices long ago became unaffordable for those living paycheck to paycheck. This afternoon I was nominated to be the president-elect of our Rotary lunch club. Which got me thinking about all the benefits that Rotary brings me. Besides the satisfaction and good feeling that comes from participating in our many community/world benefit projects (trash pick up, fund raising for scholarships, polio eradication campaign, donating ambulances to villages in Mexico...), there is a very obvious professional benefit to me as well - networking.
