asheville aging in place: Family ties are shaping the housing market. (Part 1) - 11/25/14 09:53 PM

Asheville Real Estate Journal

“ It is the baby boomers that right now are shaping many areas of the housing market."

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, I was interested to read an article in which friends and family ties are highlighted.  In an article for Property Observer,    Peter Chittenden takes a look at how “Boomers” retirement plans are impacting the housing market, and points out that the desire to stay connected is a key factor to be considered

As life expectancy among the boomers continues to rise, a more complex housing market is evolving...[and]... the traditional … (3 comments)

asheville aging in place: 3 Steps to Planning a "Forever Home"- Asheville- Style - 07/30/14 03:25 AM

Planning and creating a dwelling place that is designed for life makes sense regardless of one's age. But you may not be aware of a trend. Take a look at these statistics!
Eighty (80) percent of older people today say they prefer live in their own homes. And this holds true here in Asheville where people  tell us they desire to live in a home of their choice. Have you ever thought that this actually may change the way homes are designed?  You may wonder when and where to start moving forward with your plans for the future … (3 comments)

Asheville Real Estate Journal
Post50 Homes- Style Options

When Sage and John, a beautiful couple beginning their Post-50 adventure, decided to create a sanctuary – a wonderful dream dwelling—  it was clear to them that they wanted to build something small.
They had seen an ad in an Asheville journal and were looking at a land and home package for just over $100,000. The interior would be just under 800 sqft. There would be room to add on  an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) as well. At some point in the future the idea of continuing a “family compound” … (1 comments)

Local News from The Trail Blazer Team’s Official “Nose for News” Retriever

Not long ago, The Trailblazer Team's Official Nose for News Retriever (photo above)  found a report about Senior Adults enjoying sharing  life experiences with younger people and students.
The report talked of ways to:: Increase interaction and exchange of information between the younger and older generations; to enrich the community by honoring and preserving wisdom keepers and culture bearers; and to support our youth’s energy and enthusiasm for learning. To be honest, that wasn't news to us, as we have noticed an upswing in clients … (1 comments)

asheville aging in place: Aging-in-place features ... higher profile as baby boomers get older - 03/12/14 11:49 PM
A headline in the real estate section of the Washington Post   caught my eye this morning. It read," ‘Aging-in-place’ features for the home gain higher profile as baby boomers get older.
Real Estate Market Trends- Boomers Aging-in-Place
" According to the article, the new home of a "boomer" couple was " built to accommodate couple as they age" and  included a few features I've been highlighting in the Active Rain series (you can read the entire Active Rain series in the Aging-in-Place Group) - — including an elevator, wide doorways to accommodate a wheelchair and a flat, no-step entryway.

Real estate trends:A kind track to life-course transitions at home- Asheville Style
Life-course transitions happen to everybody. In that regard, as real estate professionals watching trends in  housing, we are especially interested in current predictions  from the home-building industry. According to the National Association of Home Builders, aging will be the second-biggest influence on home design in the next few years [source:NAHB].
It seems unlikely that older adults and "boomers" will choose to move to “retirement homes”- our 55+ colleagues are just too "hip" .
" We no longer are in a 'youth market'- but in one driven … (3 comments)

The Ever-Evolving Home -Asheville Style
We've heard it said so many times!...Asheville, NC is "Boomer-Heaven"- and we believe it's true!  And this is especially true as the economy recovers and mortgage rates begin to rise. Certainly, the time to invest in land and home is now. For those who are lucky to already have invested in a second and/or vacation home, Asheville holds a special promise. Many NOT-All-That-Retiring Post-50-People have a positive equity balance on our homes. We have taken advantage of historically low interest rates and may be more inclined to remain in our homes as we "age in place". … (1 comments)

asheville aging in place: Who's Your Client- 2014? - 11/06/13 09:51 PM

Looking forward to 2014 means doing Research: Who's Your Client- 2014? Three questions:

    1. What does the future hold – not just for  2014,but a little further on down the road?
    2. Who will be your client in 2014?
    3. What does the "boomer" explosion mean in terms of your client-base and to you?

So, at least in Asheville, as the leaves color the day,  this is the time of year many of us scope out market trends, demographics and our potential client base.  But there is more than this discovery … (1 comments)

asheville aging in place: Aging-in-Place- What IS It?? Asheville Style - 10/20/13 01:15 AM
While having tea and scones -- at EDNA'S in North Asheville -- late afternoon-- gorgeous autumn day,  with a "boomer" client, I was asked a Very Interesting Question: " WHAT exactly is 'aging-in-place'???"
"Oh," I replied,  Good Question!"
What is aging in place?

AGING-IN-PLACE is a catch phrase used to describe "The ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level." It refers to a choice by those concerned  to remain in a lifelong home and independent for so long as possible.
I confided that I like to use another term I … (4 comments)

asheville aging in place: Riding the Hands of Time- TRENDS- Asheville Style - 08/19/13 10:40 PM
Think of it as  "ride" and "boomers" come alive. That's a saying one of our clients here in Asheville mentioned to us in a conversation about life after 50. We were intrigued! It's true- it seems that many older adults and "baby boomers" are, right about now, thinking about "The Clock".
TRENDS: Getting Creative: As real estate professionals, working with this huge demographic, are you thinking about that, too- mulling over certain choices in terms of a "Forever Home"- and the potential benefits of aging-in-place?
Much new information is arriving. Advances in the area of positive aging are on the … (4 comments)

asheville aging in place: After You Buy the Land...Barrier-Free Living! Kitchen - 07/14/13 05:38 AM
The future is bright when it comes to interior design for older adults, so after you find the perfect Asheville area land, start to plan for barrier-free living spaces.
According to a recent survey by AARP, eighty percent (or more) of older adults prefer to remain in a lifelong home where universal or accessible design can be a focus. Is this the season where function and aesthetics coexist?  Judging from the demands of our clients, especially those thinking about creating pocket neighborhoods near West Asheville, I'd have to answer , "YES!"
But here is another good question:
