When it comes to being an Eco-Starevery home can shine, even an "Oldie but Goodie" like this one in an historic and  sustainable community in Asheville, NC.
Simple  changes at home can add up to real benefits for your family, neighborhood and contribute to a sustainable community.
Here, for example, are at least 10 "re-greens' ( things you can do)  to retrofit an older home that I collected as part of an on-going series I am doing to highlight Active Rain bloggers who have caught my attention with their wit and wisdom(Look for my reBLOGS)

asheville green buyers broker: Can a "Luxury" Home also be "Green"? - 01/07/09 01:24 AM
Can a "Luxury" Home also be "Green"?   If you think that it is possible for a home to be both a "luxury home" and  eco-savvyyou are one person who has given some thought to how the building is to be used.
Flexible design a key feature in green-built homes. Size and function matter when you are talking about environmental impact. In fact, size can be quite a lively, if not controversial subject with our green buyer clients and eco-friendly builders and developers.
Can a "Luxury" home also be "Green"?
As you consider  your answer, you may want to take into account the relationship … (5 comments)

asheville green buyers broker: CSA's across the USA! (Locally Grown in GOOD!) - 01/05/09 10:48 AM
Farm stewards across the USA and CSA Farms here in the Greater Asheville area contributed so much to our holiday season. All across the nation farmer's markets offered sustainable, useful gifts such as honey, molasses, jams, jellies, pickles, salad dressings, and herb vinegars and oils directly from the person who made them.
Did your family, friends and wonderful real estate clients enjoy the small tokens of affection found for them as much as mine did?
I found "non-edible"  gifts such as soaps, salves, lotions, pottery, baskets, quilts, pot holders, bee's wax candles, brooms, and more local wood and fiber crafts.
The excellent thing … (2 comments)

asheville green buyers broker: Asheville's Charm: Weaving the Threads of "Smart Growth" and Cultural Creativity - 01/03/09 02:50 AM
Asheville's Charm: Weaving the  Threads of "Smart Growth" and Cultural Creativity:  Various and charmingly interwoven cultural threads make up the historic and eco-friendly communities in Asheville, NC.
As Green Buyers' Brokershere in Asheville, we feel lucky to be a part of "the design team for the future".  Our small city, Asheville, N.C. can only grow so much until it becomes a large city. As we grow, and judging from the influx of folks (especially Baby Boomers) relocating to Asheville indicate, we will continue grow,  how we grow requires consideration.

asheville green buyers broker: We are Double (maybe triple) Lucky to be "GREEN" Buyers' Brokers here in Asheville, NC. - 01/01/09 10:31 AM
We are Double (maybe triple)  Lucky to be "GREEN" Buyers' Brokers here in Asheville, NC.  I say this for two (or three) reasons.
First-we are lucky because not only are we located in one of the most beautiful places in the world, but, to our great advantage,
Second-our eco-friendly clients recognize this.
Third- (and we are VERY lucky in this regard) it seems that our clients already appreciate how much green features and environmental solutions benefit them.
Most of the folks we get to work with place a very high value their environment (both personal and in general) and on wellness. … (5 comments)

asheville green buyers broker: conservation real estate stories from asheville's Land Brokers - 01/01/09 10:03 AM
We were out looking at land for a client today. The family plans to build three homes on the property they select. The homes will be placed in a portion of the land. The majority of the land will be conserved.
We have been lucky over the past years to be a part of such conservation real estate stories.

I got to wondering today just how much LAND we have brokered. I am going to back into my records and will let you know. But my guestimate is around … (5 comments)

asheville green buyers broker: WHAT Did You Say a "CSA" Is?? And WHAT is "S L O W Food" ?? - 12/31/08 01:47 AM
We are GREEN Buyers' Brokers. We expect to respond to interesting eco-friendly questions. For example, just last weeka "greenie" couple who are looking to establish a conservation development here in the Asheville area, or become a part of an already established eco community asked, "
"WHAT is a CSA??"
We explained that according to Local Harvest, a CSA  (Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for the those of us who do not spend our lives on the land farming to create a relationship with a farm , even if we so choose, to receive a weekly basket of produce.
"Great idea! … (3 comments)

asheville green buyers broker: " ...the next big thing in small [GREEN & Eco-Friendly] living..." - 12/30/08 04:33 AM
Early this week, Charlie Arthur, CCIM out in Port Townsend, WA, a member at the Eco-All-Stars Group  clued us all in to " ...the next big thing in small [GREEN & Eco-Friendly] living..."  He revealed that  this "next big thing" comes from IdeaBox, a company out of Salem, Oregon.  It seems that IdeaBox offers "a lifestyle prefab housing solution."
As a land specialist, I can see some good potential for my conservation real estate buyers who may wish to have green, incredibly energy efficient temporary quarters as they build their family compound on the land they are preserving here in the mountains outside … (2 comments)

Just a few posts back, Jeff asked me to expand on what intrigues me about HickoryNut Forest, and Asheville eco-community with excellent opportunities for people relocating to the mountains who also cherish the idea of sustainability.
I thought about his question last night. One of the answers has to do with context.

asheville green buyers broker: Luxury Real Estate in Asheville this Winter - 12/28/08 04:43 AM
Luxury Real Estate . This phrase brings to the fore a question on the minds of many a "green" buyers' broker here in Asheville of late.
That question is: "Can a luxury home also be GREEN?"
It's a good question and one bound to elicit opposing viewpoints. But here in Asheville we are taking some time tonight just to consider the beauty of a winter's eve.
It is one of those perfect nights. The sky is a canvas of pale blue decorated from east to west with clouds of pink and silver and deepest rose.   From the ridge, facing north, it … (1 comments)

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) from the Pet-Friendly Perspective. Interesting! Could  indoor air quality be of concern for your Pet?
Here in Asheville, we have been looking into that. Both as pet-friendly REALTORS® and pet-lovers, we  realized that this could be an important issue since our own wee dog showed serious symptoms of distress.
At first we couldn't believe that IAQ could be the problem. We hopped on over to Wikipedia to see if there was any pet-friendly information there. Here is what we found on indoor air quality. According to Wikipedia, indoor air quality (IAQ)  " deals with the content of interior air … (3 comments)

asheville green buyers broker: Bodie-the-Mule and 10 Dogs Proclaim Asheville's Pet-Friendly Buyers' Broker - 12/26/08 02:14 PM
I am an avid admirer of furry creatures, the four-legged kind. They seem to like me, too. Mules appear to be especially fond of me. Bodie-the Mule greets me with a huge noise that starts with a whinny, and ends in a hee-haw whenever I round the bend to visit the Jones' at their place, a 30+ acre eco-friendly spread we brokered for them a few years ago.  It is now set aside for organic farming and not to be developed.

For some reason, I also am one Buyers' Broker who also keeps attracting dog lovers. Maybe that's because I … (1 comments)
