Any number of our “Baby Boomer” clients tell me they are considering what appears to some to be a “radical aging-in-place” option.

"What? Radical?" I say.  Coming at this notion from the perspective of  a  one-time “Flower Child” I am smiling all the way  from Today to the way back when radical 60s! Radical DEFINED Today:  a) Affordable options. b) Neighborly living in Asheville. c) Both comfortable and practical.
For the past many years as you know, I’ve been a big proponent of lifelong homes with premium functionality. If you read my blog, you’ll know that I’m excited … (2 comments)

green building: What's On YOUR Lucky Green Roof? Part 2. An Irish Lad in Boston's Southie. - 03/17/10 01:01 AM
In Part 1 of this series,  we admitted that after visiting Asheville NC's LEED Certified Blue Ridge Parkway Center and the Green Roof we became  Roof Nuts,  intrigued with the concept and  possibilities today's roofs offer . Features such as  roof color, stormwater runoff systems, skylights improve sustainability and quality of life. But the most fascinating of all for us is The "Lucky" Green Roof.
According to Wikipedia, "A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as … (7 comments)

The American Institute of Architects (AIA)  recently instituted a "GreenSteps" initiative with a series of instructive videos available for architects, other professionals and the public.
"There's been a lot of talk about changes in our climate lately. CO2 emissions, dwindling resources, and energy usage are growing concerns in every walk of life, " a spokesperson for the organization reported.
" AIA Architects, in particular, want to address those concerns. We strongly believe that the time for talk has passed, and now it is time to walk the walk. "

green building: Due Diligence: A Party on the LAND - 06/26/08 03:23 AM
We've been doing lots of "due diligence"  on acreage and eco-community building sites this year.
We actually love this time period. It's a "party" where we get together with everyone and enjoy a project of the land-kind.
Here follows a series of posts on the typical  steps involved as we coordinate with land experts and professionals  the new land stewards and those who have been taking good care of the land for many years (or maybe for just a few years)..and  all of us aim toward a happy and  successful adventure.
Step One: new land steward goes out onto the building site … (6 comments)

The parade commenced. The cry went out.  It was heard in the neighborhood, It was heard on downtown streets. You could even see it plastered on local bulletin boards.

green building: PUDs & E-PUDS Under a Green Umbrella- The Trend Toward Mixed-Use Development - 11/28/06 03:01 PM
In a recent rambling, Bryant  had  PUDs on his mind. His "condition" must be contagious! I've been sitting under a green umbrellaever since with PUDs on my mind, too. . . E-PUDsthat is!       Bryant did a great job of explaining all about PUDs so I'll  not tarry there, but instead shall sally forth from into the realm of green building  in communities with renewable energy systems that have both creature comforts and quality of life components.
I can see it right now...a green umbrella,a café, a neighborhood organic market, a local artisans' shop, a bakery, office and live-work spacejust off the road, and further … (13 comments)
