senior housing: Asheville “Boomers” Downsizing & Intergenerational Community - 04/04/14 05:23 AM

Asheville “Boomers”  are keeping that REALLY Nice Kitchen in an Intergenerational Community, Downsizing, and smiling. Of course! Asheville is a progressive place.
There is a strong voice for sustainable excellence here. You may discover a fondness for locally grown and harvested organic produce and sweet kitchens in small spaces, (see photo)
and  living in a way that supports a gentle use of the land and community. As concerned real estate consultants, we are always on the lookout for thoughtful solutions.
Aging-in-Place in a Small Space (It’s Poetic!)

senior housing: The “aging-in-place” trend in place-making- Asheville Style - 05/15/13 05:11 AM

The “aging-in-place” trend in place-making-Asheville Style lifelong homes.

Just as digital outreach in the Boomer Age is responding to human needs-  so is the “aging-in-place” trend in place-making.

That is very clear here  in Asheville where-  more and more- our clients are asking for a neighborhood grocery store, and not far away, an espresso café, and not far from that, the park for use- regardless of age.

You will  see families at Beaverdam park all the time, (see my photo) for example.  If you were to  walk along any of the streets in this “walkable” … (4 comments)

In fact, at our publication, we’ve been taking am Earth Week  poll . We asked
Have you Changed Your Light Bulbs?

So it is always a good idea to check out the wattage on your light bulbs in your house. 100-watt … (8 comments)

Earth Week -Things are NOT the same as they were back in the 50s  when today's Boomers wore poodle skirts.

Hula hoops,   poodle skirts, putting on a “45”  or  cruising Woodward Avenue – Loved those times.  Things were different then. Times are changing! Now  lifelong homes are gaining popularity-and here in Asheville, the community is evolving as is the idea of sustainable excellence.

Not a favorite question for many entering and going beyond “boomerhood”
but, even if it is hard to think about, here is  a serious question to consider:
Wouldn't it be nice
to be able to stay in your own home
rather than in a nursing home?

Trends in Home Design
More and more of our older adult clients here in Asheville, NC are leading the way when it comes to buying/selling/remodeling their homes with "aging-in-place" in mind.
We are looking at trends in home design and a future that holds many new possibilities.

senior housing: Stay-in-Your-Home Ideas - 02/08/13 12:21 AM

Have you looked back at some of your older posts lately? That’s what I have been doing. I came across one that had me smiling this morning –entitled  Stay-in-Your-Home Ideas
The post happened  with collaboration from AR colleagues on the premise that -asMichel de Montaigne, essayist (1533-1592) said-  “It is good to rub and polish your mind against that of others.  Now, four years later, I find myself more concerned with this challenge than ever. After all, Baby Boomers are a huge part of our market and they are retiring at the rate of 10,000 per day! So would … (9 comments)

senior housing: Forward planning can make a home work for tomorrow - 02/07/13 12:00 AM

What makes a home have personal value for you over the years?
THIS is one important question my clients have been asking me of late.

You don't have to be old to live in an accessible home. But with luck you will be old someday. Now what? It's not news. The "Lucky Few" (1929-1945) & "Baby Boomers" (1946-1964) are retiring- at the rate of- get this- 10,000 per day!
With good advice from real estate and real estate-related professionals, older adults also can do so with a new vision of aging. I like to think that this is a perspective that includes lovely … (7 comments)

senior housing: Stunning and functional Asheville homes - 02/04/13 10:16 PM

Stunning and functional Asheville homes are the quest of many boomer home owners who are considering createve retirement.  So I am investigating the relationship between "stunning and functional" and  “aging-in-place” - What's that all about? I’ve been asking boomer-clients- who have planned ahead to live independently in their homes-  to give me a heads-up.
When the objective is "stunning and functional"- what would they recommend?  I heard that it  is a good idea to consult with a real estate Senior Specialist and/or a Certified Aging In-Place Specialist (CAPS) when planning home remodeling projects.
The idea is seamlessly to incorporate accessibility … (6 comments)

senior housing: Re-Inventing Home Choices- Asheville - 02/03/13 11:28 PM

Client Question on Re-Inventing Home Choices here in Asheville : What if we decide to sell our home? Possibly even look for a lot in a "front porch" community on which to build a new home featuring universal design concepts?
My thoughts on this...

Certainly, there is good evidence to show that Baby Boomers are NOT inclined to go the traditional retirement-leisure route. "Baby Boomers fundamentally will reinvent retirement,” James P. Gorman, president of the Merrill Lynch Global Private Client Group told the press
- “the concept of Unretirement is becoming more popular across the generations. But even more than this, it seems … (2 comments)

senior housing: Statistics and Greenliving for the "Elders" - 01/28/13 04:43 AM
Greenliving for the "Elders"- Oh Those Statistics
Over the past few years, I have (have you?)  noticed a "change in the weather" in terms of the way people -of-a certain-age( boomers, especially) are choosing where and how they live and what they need. Is this a trend? Quite possibly so.
Recently,I turned for proof to statistics and  our Mountain MLS System here in Asheville. Although putting numbers on a par with my intuition as a REALTOR® feels a little “dangerous”— (I don't want to lose my intuitive edge) — understanding statistics could be important for everyone involved from our clients to the brokerage business … (2 comments)

Aging-in-Place- The Real Story
So much can grow out of life experiences - especially if they are accentuated by events of the 60s.
Many of us -approximately 90 Million in 2012, now somewhere between the ages of 50-to-80-or so, given those events, are not settling for life after retirement as lived by our parents. Instead, we fearlessly cheer for aging beautifully and well- complementary and alternative medicine, and for innovative trends in our "At Last Homes" that utilize beautiful universal design features, and for multi-generational solutions, and for the economic power we possess- (especially women). . ..( I'm just sayin')...and … (10 comments)
