In Florida, and especially areas closer to big cities, horse owners on small acreage are faced with the manure management dilemma of just what to do with all that manure.... Since I visit small farms all day long, I tend to ask owners how they control their horse waste and am sometimes am surprised by their ingenuity. A single 1,000 lb. horse generates around 50 lb. of manure per DAY (9 TONS a year), add to that bedding and shavings if you have them stall-kept and you can see the problem is large. I read my most recent copy of John Lyons' magazine Perfect Horse with the normal level of excitement and enthusiasm. (when I can ignore the ridiculous amount of Wrangler jeans brand placement). Although not trained in natural horsemanship, I am very eager to learn and just LOVE the philosophy of working WITH your horse rather than controlling your horse through fear, control or other punishment. One article especially caught my eye. The SPCA has a young horse named Henry who had a very serious colic and needed an operation to save his life. Henry is a beautiful Paso Fino gelding that is approx 2 years old. He was abandoned and came in as a stallion. Henry has gone from crazed stallion to a sweet and loving gelding in a very short period of time. We have begun to train and ride him and we couldn't think of putting him down after his bout with colic. The cost to save Henry was over $7000.00. Crack! I can still hear the noise like it was yesterday. It sounded just like Barry Bonds hitting a homerun..... I turn and see a small child in a heap on the ground and a horse running wild....
