With its newest marketing slogan, "Pflugerville: Between a Rock and a Weird Place", my current hometown seems poised for even more growth now that it has been named as one of the "Top 100 Places to Live" according to Relocate America. To briefly explain the saying, Pflugerville is located between Round Rock and Austin, whose city slogan is "Keep Austin Weird". This refers to efforts to support local small businesses as opposed to large chain stores. In Pflugerville, along I-35, just north of Grand Avenue Parkway, sits Austin's Park (formerly Austin's Park and Pizza). Although they still serve pizza, they changed the name awhile back. I have taken our family there on a number of occasions to enjoy miniature golf, bumper boats, video games, and the batting cages. They have two full mini golf courses, and they are suitably challenging and fun. In the upcoming months between now and the spring of 2009, Pflugerville will be adding two large shopping centers. At the southwest corner of 130 and 45, Stone Hill Town Center will be opening with over 1 million square feet of shopping and restaurants (Home Depot opened in May in this location). This area promises a Best Buy, Chili's, several retail clothing stores, a large Cinemark theater, and a 24-Hour Fitness. Most years, I debate over whether to bother with going to watch fireworks, and we typically put off planning until the last minute. Last year, I remember driving my two older kids to see the big fireworks show in Round Rock as dusk was settling over the area. They used to wait until well after dark to begin; as luck would have it, they began much earlier so we saw some of them from a distance. According to the Community Impact newspaper, the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation recently hired an outside consultant to determine which retail businesses would be the "most likely to succeed" in this area.
The results were not surprising to me as a 13-year resident of the area. A number of restaurants made the list, along with some higher-end shopping destinations. When the toll roads opened here about 18 months ago, it made our commute time much easier to all of our favorite places. It also made the area highly desirable for retailers.
