relocation package: Study Suggests the Perfect Retail Stores and Restaurants for Pflugerville, Texas - 06/07/08 02:42 PM

According to the Community Impact newspaper, the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation recently hired an outside consultant to determine which retail businesses would be the "most likely to succeed" in this area.

The results were not surprising to me as a 13-year resident of the area.  A number of restaurants made the list, along with some higher-end shopping destinations.  When the toll roads opened here about 18 months ago, it made our commute time much easier to all of our favorite places.  It also made the area highly desirable for retailers.

relocation package: Our Date Night at the Museum! - 04/05/08 03:28 PM

My wife and I had a date night last night, and we decided to attend "B Scene", which is a soiree held each month at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas campus.  They have a DJ playing tunes from various eras, finger foods, beverages, along with some brief tours of the art itself.

My wife Pam has been there a number of times, while this was only my second visit.  Quite frankly, Pam is probably qualified to conduct the tour herself, as she is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to art.  I enjoyed the tour, but I … (13 comments)

relocation package: Georgetown, Texas is Named # 2 "Best Place to Live and Launch" by FORTUNE Magazine - 03/26/08 08:21 AM

Today, FORTUNE Magazine released its list of the Top 100 places to live and launch a new business.  Coming in at # 2 on the list in a town about 15 minutes from my home, and the location of my alma mater, Southwestern University.  Georgetown, Texas, with a current population of about 38,000 and located about 30 minutes north of downtown Austin, ranked so well on this particular list for several reasons:
Business friendly tax structureEntrepreneurial camaraderieScenic suburb of AustinRelatively low water and electricity ratesProperty taxes are among the lowest in the regionHaving lived in Georgetown for a few years (although it was … (7 comments)

Mount Bonnell - This is one of the highest points in Austin, and it is open to the public.  Since you have to climb a mega-staircase to get to the top, it's great for exercise, has a great view for miles, makes a great romantic picnic spot, and... it's free!  It … (48 comments)

relocation package: Austin Texas Live Music - Look No Further! - 03/21/08 04:02 AM

Austin Texas is known as the "Live Music Capital of the World", and it seems to be well-deserving of this title.  With Sixth Street, the South by Southwest Music Festival, and the popular "Austin City Limits" TV show, our town is definitely at the forefront of the live music scene nationally.
Because of the sheer number of musical venues in and around Austin, ranging in size from amphitheaters to small "hole-in-the-wall" places, it would be difficult to include every single venue in one article.  With that in mind, I want to attempt to give you a cross-section and a taste of what … (15 comments)

relocation package: Downtown Austin Real Estate - What Central Austin Neighborhood Should I Consider? - 03/20/08 06:29 AM

Some of the most consistent appreciation for home prices in Austin has occurred in the central Austin area.  Austin has a bus system through Capital Metro, but no subways or other public transit system, so convenience is critical for many buyers, including many who office downtown or in one of the centrally-located hospitals. At Austin Texas Homes, LLC, we can't tell you where you should live, but we certainly can give you an idea of what the price ranges for a few of the better-known central Austin neighborhoods.
Some of the older, more prestigious neighborhoods in central Austin include Tarrytown, Hyde Park, Enfield, … (22 comments)

With the economic uncertainties facing many areas of the country, I feel blessed to be in Austin, Texas these days.  Over the past several months, Austin seems to have been on the national radar more and more often.  Today, according to a story from ABC News, Austin is #3 for its "Hottest Places to Get a Job" list.  The other top five cities, in order, were Salt Lake City, Wichita, Atlanta, and Fort Worth.
According to Jennifer Merritt, the CareerJournal Editor for the Wall Street Journal, Austin is "a vibrant place to live" (I agree), and our town is "good for young … (13 comments)

Dear Potential Austin Home Buyer,
Austin is a beautiful and eclectic town with an optimistic and youthful spirit.  I can understand why you would like to live here with us.  I was born and raised in Dallas, but I have lived here for over 22 years now.
If you are considering relocating to the Austin, Texas area, I would love the opportunity to help you find the right home.  I don't normally write "look at me" articles in my blog, but I realized that not doing so might actually be a disservice to relocating buyers who are unfamiliar with Austin.

relocation package: Austin Children's Museum - Fun for the Whole Family! - 02/22/08 02:49 PM
The Austin Children's Museum in downtown Austin serves as a great outing for the entire family.  My wife and I have had a membership there previously, and it is well worth the money.  With a recent influx of funds, the museum has completely revamped many of the learning areas, and our kids, ages 9, 6, and nearly 2, had a terrific time on a recent excursion.

Their hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 12pm-5pm (Closed Mondays).  Wednesday nights from 5pm-8pm are "community nights", which means FREE admission for everyone during that window of time.

According to a recent study conducted by bizjournals of the largest 50 metropolitan areas in the country, Austin was named among the least stressful places to live in the United States.  As an Austin-area resident for the past 20 years, I am not surprised to hear this, as I have always described this town as laid-back and optimistic with a youthful spirit.

relocation package: Austin Texas Golf Courses - Private Courses - 02/12/08 10:52 AM
I did some research on private golf courses in the general Austin area, and I honestly had no idea how many courses there were around here, not to mention driving ranges.  There are over 60 courses total in this area (both private and public included), which means that there is one golf course serving every 23,000 people (including children).  Not too shabby.
I haven't had the opportunity to play any of these particular courses, probably because I am not really a spectacular golfer, so I haven't felt compelled to purchase a private club membership.  However, there are MANY great options available in … (23 comments)

relocation package: Austin Texas Named as Top Place to Buy a House by Entrepreneur Magazine - 01/29/08 02:36 AM

Last week, "Entrepreneur Magazine" released its latest list of Best Places to Buy a House.  Not surprisingly, the Austin metro area placed at the top of the list this time around.  In the article, columnist Danielle Babb (who also co-authored a book on finding foreclosures with my friend Bill Nazur) states,
Round Rock and Austin have seen incredible job growth and very stable home prices despite the downturn nationwide. Jobs continue to grow here--a factor for keeping inventory low and prices stable.
Clearly, this is something that I have been preaching to our clients and potential clients for many months, but the … (18 comments)

relocation package: Hutto Real Estate - Fastest Growing City in Texas! - 01/26/08 02:32 PM
Recently, according to the Community Impact newspaper, Hutto, Texas was named the "Fastest Growing City in Texas", posting an incredible 665.7% growth over the years from 2000 - 2006.  Currently, the population is over 17,200.  In 1990, the population was at a mere 650 people, and in 2000, it was approximately 1250.
So, what is responsible for this phenomenal growth?  Having lived in nearby Pflugerville for 13 years now, I have watched this growth firsthand.  The current population growth spike mainly comes from simple geography.
With the advent of the toll road system in late 2006, Hutto is now located mere minutes from … (21 comments)

relocation package: Tukong Moosul Martial Arts, Austin Texas - A great place for kids! - 01/17/08 03:10 PM

My nine-year old son has been training for several years in Tukong Moosul, and I wanted to promote this business as a terrific place for kids to learn and exercise.  Specific skills that I have seen improve for my son include balance, strength, and endurance.  Additionally, there is a mental toughness instilled that impresses me.  In addition to this, the teachers that he has had are all "good with kids", especially Master Ali Brown.  Master Ali is young and personable, and the kids always respond well to him.  In fact, we switched to the headquarters school a couple of years ago … (14 comments)

relocation package: Pflugerville Texas is Coming into its Own - 01/05/08 03:32 PM

As a 13-year resident of Pflugerville, Texas (located immediately adjacent to north Austin), I have seen a lot of growth occur here over the years.  I remember doing a real estate marketing piece in 1997, which was my first year in the business.  That year, they had recently replaced the population sign for our town, which used to read 4,444.  I believe this was for the 1990 census figures.  As I recall, the population then was around 11,000, so I was happy to point to our growth as a sign of things to come.

In 2000, the population was around 16,500, and … (25 comments)

relocation package: Round Rock Restaurant Review - Zorba Greek Restaurant - 12/27/07 09:54 AM

Yesterday, while my mom was still in town, we decided to go do a bit of shopping with the whole family.  We were headed to Lakeline Mall, and we originally considered going to that area to eat.  On the way there, I decided that would be ill-advised, considering it was the day after Christmas and it was exactly "lunchtime" (i.e. around noon).  Instead, we opted to go to Zorba, which is a Greek restaurant located near Dell in Round Rock, just in front of the Wal-Mart.

Although the food was superb, the communication skills of the employees who were placed in … (15 comments)
