Two consecutive years without major forest fires have left the state’s fire suppression fund fairly healthy, but authorities with state and federal agencies warn: Wildfire season isn’t over yet. Though there have been few fires this summer, several have broken out in the last few weeks, according to InciWeb, a national incident information system. “It certainly isn’t over yet,” Mary Sexton, director of Montana’s Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, said Tuesday. Yellowstone Park Bison with an Old Faithful Backdrop The number of July visitors to Yellowstone National Park topped 900,000 for only the third time in the park's history this year, the National Park Service said Thursday. The park had 906,935 visitors last month, the second-highest monthly total ever recorded. The total is down from July 2010, which set the single-month record at 957,785. Yellowstone recorded 1,848,658 recreational visitors from January to July of this year. That's about 163,000 fewer visitors than the same time period in 2010, which was a record year. (3 comments)
It looks like our big rivers have crested and are on the way back down. We have actually had some great fishing despite the high water. The Gallatin RiverThe Gallatin River is located just west of Bozeman and is known for it's abundance of fish and it's unbelievable scenery. Bozeman Summer Hiking Series - Kirk Hill Loop's Looking North into Bozeman with the Bridger Range in the Distance Sunny Saturday's are made for hiking and with a 4 year old's and 2 year old's social calendar to keep up with, short hikes close to town are perfect for getting a quick fix when birthday parties and play dates are one the daily docket. The Kirk Hill Loops fit the bill to a "T" in this situation. Less than 10 minutes from town, the longest of the loops is under 2 miles and even with a handful of stops to rest (5 comments)

For as much attention in recent years that the mountain lion has garnered, they are exceptionally seclusive animals and very few humans have actually seen a lion in the wild.
