montana recreation: Arch or no arch? Second entrance explored to reduce traffic near Yellowstone Park - 07/16/11 07:53 AM
Roosevelt Arch - Yellowstone Park(Photo by Eric Peterson)
Every day at the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park, cars stream under the historic Roosevelt Arch, a stone structure inscribed with a well-known phrase: For the benefit and enjoyment of the people.
It's a popular place to stop for photos, and it's also a place where traffic congests as long lines form to enter the park.
But the park has a plan to abate that traffic. Thursday, the park released a proposal that calls for adding a second entrance so visitors can choose to use a new access road to avoid the … (3 comments)

Current SW Montana Fishing Report

The Gallatin RiverThe Gallatin River is located just west of Bozeman and is known for it's abundance of fish and it's unbelievable scenery.  Starting about 70 miles south of Bozeman and flowing North following U.S. Highway 191 most of its length, the Gallatin has easy access and is a great choice for wade fishing all year long.Current Conditions & Fishing Strategy06/19/2011 With the arrival of warmer temperatures and heavy rain the water levels on the Gallatin have risen substantially. Along with higher flow has come increased turbidity. That's a nice way of saying that the … (3 comments)

Bozeman Summer Hiking Series - Drinking Horse Mountain
Entering Trail from the Bozeman Fish Hatchery
The second installment of my Bozeman Summer Hiking Series is Drinking Horse Mountain, a nice 2.5 mile loop that begins from the parking lot of the Bozeman Fish Hatchery on Bozeman's north side just before entering into Bridger Canyon.  Consequently, the Hatchery has its own interpretive trail that is also worth checking out if you are looking for something fun and interesting for the family to do.

Bozeman Summer Hiking Series - The "M" Trail
Bozeman is surrounded by phenomenal access to some truly wonderful recreational opportunities, hiking being one of them.  One of the most recognizable and popular hikes in the Bozeman area is the "M".  The "M" is so named for the large, white "M" that symbolizes Montana State University and can be seen from nearly everywhere in the Gallatin Valley.
There are two routes to take up to the namesake, one is quite direct and other quite meandering.  On this day, with a 4 year old and a 2 year old in tow, we … (0 comments)

montana recreation: Montana Wildlife - Mule Deer - 03/01/11 08:09 AM
Mule Deer

Mule Deer are named for their resemblance to the domestic mule due to the shape and size of their ears, which can be nine inches long.  Mule deer are a significant part of the major mammal ecosystem in Montana.  Mule deer are distributed throughout the state and are present in nearly all areas from eastern border to western border as well as northern border to southern border.  Mule deer have very acute vision and hearing; however they rely largely on their sense of smell to determine their surroundings.  Although their vision is very acute they can easily overlook stationary objects … (5 comments)

montana recreation: Montana Wildlife - Whitetail Deer by Jason Frey - 02/25/11 09:34 AM

Whitetails get their highly creative name from the underside of their posterior, which they wave like flags when in flight as a visual alarm to other deer in the area.  Exceptionally graceful, built for speed and stealth, whitetails have a tendency to materialize from thin air and disappear again in much the same way; they will attempt to quietly sneak away from danger before being detected or going into full flight.  They are highly alert animals that have a sense of smell coupled with an ability to detect noises that are far superior to those of humans.  Their noses are so … (2 comments)

Montana Wildlife - Shiras Moose

Moose, in my opinion, are so ugly they are almost beautiful and for those of you who have seen this long-legged, gangly creature know exactly what I mean. Although they are not as regal as elk, elusive as deer or nearly as interesting political fodder as wolves or Yellowstone bison, moose are a specific and important portion of the Montana ecosystem.  First noted on the Lewis and Clark Expedition in May of 1805 near the Milk River of Montana, moose are the largest of the deer family and the largest antlered animal in the world.  … (6 comments)

montana recreation: Montana Wildlife - Black Bear - 01/29/11 04:16 PM

Black Bear

Perhaps the most stirring, and documented animal in the history of man, the bear appears in ancient literature, mythology, cave drawings, and folklore.  Unfortunately, many stories surrounding the ferocity of bears do not make the distinction between the grizzly, and its more docile cousin the black bear.   Although they prefer higher elevation forests, droppings indicate heavy use of thorn-apple and other fruiting shrubs at lower elevations.
Black bears are very diverse animals, populating much of North America.  Their native habitat, although much has been developed, consists of mountainous and wooded ecosystems that stretch from Alaska to Florida, Canada … (5 comments)

montana recreation: Top 6 Places to Visit in the Bozeman, MT Area - 01/15/11 03:19 PM
Top 6 Places to Visit in the Bozeman, MT Area

When discussing the Bozeman area with people who are visiting for the first time or are bringing children/grandchildren to the area, the conversation invariably turns to where should we go, and what should we do.  Entire books have been written on area activities in and around Bozeman, winter or summer, rugged or refined, entry level to extreme, there really is something for everyone and everyone in the family.
My suggestions to places you should visit when in the Bozeman area are:
1. Yellowstone National Park - Our Nation's first National … (4 comments)

Yellowstone National Park Sees Record Traffic in 2010
Yellowstone Falls, Yellowstone National Park
Three of the last four years have set an annual visitation record for Yellowstone National Park, and 2010 marks the second year in a row this milestone has been eclipsed.
In 2010, over 3,640,000 came through our nation's first National Park, which was over a 10% increase from the previous attendance record set in 2009.
The park set record attendance levels in 5 separate months of the year as well, starting in June and lasting through October. Double digit percentage increases were recorded in Gardiner, MT, the park's north … (9 comments)

montana recreation: I'm not the guy.....but I know a guy/girl. - 01/02/11 05:57 PM
As Realtors, and professionals associated with the business of buying, selling, investing in and financing real estate, we know the importance of relationships.  Not only relationships with our clients, but relationships with other professionals in our markets....and even though they are important, I don't mean other realtors.
In my market of SW Montana, it is not only important to know banking professionals, independant mortgage lenders, appraisers, inspectors, general contractors, architects and government officials.  It is also important to know fishing guides who can get onto tightly held private spring creeks to cast for trophy trout, skiing instructors that can cater to all ages and … (6 comments)

montana recreation: Family Hike to History Rock near Bozeman, MT - 12/17/10 07:28 AM

I had the opportunity this past weekend to take a morning and enjoy it with my family, which is something we do not get to do as often as I would like.  My wife and I currently have two children, our son is almost 4, our daughter is 18 months, and we are expecting #3 in December.  We are not crazy but, if the family continues to expand at this rate, we may be soon.  Spare time is at a premium and enjoying it all together is rarer still. So when the opportunity arose for a family hike we were … (0 comments)

montana recreation: Fairy Lake Outing near Bozeman, MT - 12/17/10 07:26 AM

Southwestern Montana is dotted with a plethora of clear mountain stream and crystal lakes, and many of them are located a short distance the recreation centers ofBozeman and Big Sky.  The trouble lies not in the decision to visit these natural wonders but in which one to choose as the days destination.  A couple weeks back, my wife and I loaded up kids, car seats, stroller and camera and headed to Fairy Lake which is located in a mountain cirque in the Bridger Range north of Bozeman.  After exiting the asphalt we followed the Forest Service road approximately 7 miles to the campground, trailhead … (0 comments)
