The long, howling cries of wolves broke the silence of a cold morning inside snowy Yellowstone National Park on Monday. A group of people gathered on the side of a park road heard the calls. One of them was Doug Smith, a senior wildlife biologist at the park and leader of its wolf project. “The best way to experience wolves is to hear them,” he said.

Yellowstone Park Bison with an Old Faithful Backdrop The number of July visitors to Yellowstone National Park topped 900,000 for only the third time in the park's history this year, the National Park Service said Thursday. The park had 906,935 visitors last month, the second-highest monthly total ever recorded. The total is down from July 2010, which set the single-month record at 957,785. Yellowstone recorded 1,848,658 recreational visitors from January to July of this year. That's about 163,000 fewer visitors than the same time period in 2010, which was a record year. (3 comments)

Yellowstone National Park Sees Record Traffic in 2010 Yellowstone Falls, Yellowstone National Park Three of the last four years have set an annual visitation record for Yellowstone National Park, and 2010 marks the second year in a row this milestone has been eclipsed. In 2010, over 3,640,000 came through our nation's first National Park, which was over a 10% increase from the previous attendance record set in 2009. The park set record attendance levels in 5 separate months of the year as well, starting in June and lasting through October.
