In 2012 the University of North Carolina did a burglar study.  And they did it right.  They asked 372 burglars in North Carolina, Ohio and Kentucky questions about their "craft."  The questions asked included what motivated them to be burglars, how they targeted houses, what deterred them from particular houses, techniques to get in, and what motivated male and female burglars.
Interesting findings are these:

Door locks are essential.  Too bad, but that's the way it is.  And you get what you pay for.
