kick out flashing: If You Invite Water In, It Will Come And Stay - 06/19/16 08:30 PM
If you invite water in, it will come and stay.
Water must be controlled.  Water can be THE KILLER of houses.
The damage happens slowly and insidiously.  And if changes are not made the damage will become extensive.
Flashing is present here but insufficiently applied.
A special form of flashing is missing.
Called "kick-out flashing," or "diverter flashing," there should be an angled member of flashing just at the bottom of this roof to divert water away from the stone and into the gutter.

Perhaps the installer did not know how to do it because kick-out flashing should have been installed here by code.
A second mistake is … (11 comments)

kick out flashing: It's Called Kick OUT Flashing For A Reason - 06/30/15 07:49 PM
It's called kick OUT flashing for a reason.  It is supposed to divert, or kick, the water out!
One of the most important things installed on a house - siding and roof - is flashing.  It keeps water out!
AND WATER IS THE KILLER OF HOUSES.
This house has James Hardie siding.  JH siding has specific installation needs.  And their website has dozens of pages and diagrams to show how installation in every instance should be done.  The product is very good when installed right.  But like most things, when it is installed wrongly it becomes a big problem, and fast.
This is a variation … (12 comments)

kick out flashing: Eaves Of Destruction - 04/12/15 08:36 PM
Different wording, maybe, than the original song, but this roof's got Eaves of Destruction.
Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say
Can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today?
But I'll tell you, over and over and over again, my friend,
Ah, you don't believe that roof's got eaves of destruction?
Actually there were three eaves of destruction.
The one circled, the other slightly visible on the right, and another on the right side of that window penetration.
Impossible to see in the photo, but there is an issue here.
Against the wall, individually along with the shingles, is step flashing.
That's good!
There needs to be step flashing.
Without step … (29 comments)

kick out flashing: If You Don't Keep Water Out With Kick-Out Flashing, You Kick It In - 04/29/14 07:34 PM
The same principle has held forever - if you don't keep water out with kick-out flashing, you kick it in.
Proper flashing is always a Best Practice.
Flashing is simple, but has to be done right.
Skipping any part of it will admit water.
Water does what water does - it is dynamically fluid!
Flashing diverts, pure and simple.
Flashing consists, as seen here, of step flashing, under each shingle, stepping, as it were, up the roof.
Counter flashing - which is a second flashing, covering the step flashing.
And then sometimes a form of siding.  If the counter flashing … (7 comments)

kick out flashing: When Historic Home Siding Installation Does Not Follow Best Practices - 02/16/14 07:37 PM
What do you do when historic home siding installation does not follow Best Practices?
What do you do when those Best Practices are demanded by the product manufacturer?
What do you do when diagrams describing installation Best Practices are available for anyone to see?  That link above is to a page with 14 diagrams for flashing installation alone.

Obviously neither of these crews employed by this contractor have seen any of those diagrams.
You should know, this project is only about 6 weeks old.
The kick-out flashing seen on the left has four diagrams to see, each advising that the … (21 comments)

kick out flashing: Kick Out Flashing - Always Best Practices - 10/27/11 10:30 PM
Some roofers recently went through our neighborhood telling everyone they had hail damage on their houses and that this "company" would make the case for them with their insurance company and they would only pay a deductible for their roof.
It worked.  A lot of people had their roofs replaced.  I won't go into all the negative ramifications of companies that do stuff like that, or the people who fall for it.
But I knew I did not have any hail damage.  But my roof is 14 years old.
So I had a good friend and roofer, Steve Gotschi, look at … (53 comments)
