mouse infestation: This Is A Mouse Highway Into Your House - 03/22/17 03:55 AM
This is a mouse highway into your house.
What is?  A door?  Trees overhanging the house and a roof vent?  A hole beside a window?
It's where the AC lines attach to the house!
Typically these lines are near to the ground, or easily accessed by climbing mice from the unit.
They merely follow the trail into the house.
If they are allowed, that is!
How are they allowed?
When the putty, or whatever sealer, dries up and falls away.  Look at the size of that opening!  It is a magical, always-open door!  They can come and go at will.
A mouse needs only a 1/4" gap or hole … (12 comments)

mouse infestation: Do You Have Mice In The House? - 02/16/17 04:45 AM
Do you have mice in the house?
These folks do.  And they don't know why.
It's a bit of an unusual request to get me to try to determine why there are mice in the house.  Usually that would be left to some pest company, and responding to some ad coupon received in the mail.
So I asked why they called me.
"We asked around our neighborhood, and you have been here many times.
Our neighbors all said the same thing - to call you because you would be fair and not try to sell us something."
Wow!  They get it!
I have been called before to investigate … (16 comments)

mouse infestation: I Hate Meeces To Pieces! - 04/04/14 08:36 PM
I remember watching show after show of the cartoon cat, Mr. Jinx, never getting the upper hand on Pixie and Dixie and screaming, "I hate meeces to pieces!"
Mice can be insidious little invaders, doing damage and leaving their, um, marks.
And when it's cold they are trying to get in!
From a distance I saw that the opening where the AC tubing and electric cable enters the house was missing some of its protective putty.
And getting closer I could see that things looked stressed.
But when I examined it closely it looked like more is going on there.
There … (50 comments)

mouse infestation: Mouse Highway! - 01/23/13 07:07 PM
Some people think that if their house is in "the big city" there is less chance for mice to bother the house.  Not true.  They are around, and when it's cold they will want to get in.  It's best not to provide them a mouse highway!
A mouse only needs a space 1/4" wide to get in!  That's it.  And they are always looking for those spaces.
Electricity needs to get inside the house.
Large service conductors bring it in.
They need a large hole on the side of the house.
And that hole is typically filled with some form of … (73 comments)

mouse infestation: This Doesn't Look Like A Big Deal - 05/18/12 08:13 PM
This doesn't look like a big deal.
It's just a small crack in the putty where the AC line enters the house.
No harm, no foul.  Just seal the gap.
All that is true.
However, that gap is 1/2".
It is large enough to admit mice.
And accept admission they will!  That is a regular mouse highway there!
We had mice in our basement a few years ago.  I did not notice them until they broke into a water jug, which leaked all over.
While investigating the jug I found droppings, and other damage, and more droppings, and more damage, and … (21 comments)

mouse infestation: Loosey Goosey - 08/10/11 11:21 PM
From a certain angle things can look good!  As with most things, it pays to view things from different points of view.
All of the service boxes are located together.  This is great!  It makes things convenient.
The AC compressor is right in front, so if you had to work on them a bit of leaning is needed.  But it is not that close, and the boxes are all accessible.
But don't be deceived!
One of these boxes is loosey goosey.
Can you see it from this angle?
The electric meter is very loosely attached to the wall.
This is never … (23 comments)
