siding problems: A Flawed Gutter Design Can Damage The House - 04/01/16 09:16 PM
Simply put, a flawed gutter design can damage the house.
Remember the axiom -
WATER IS THE KILLER OF HOUSES.
It is self evident.  It is true.  It is and it will always be.  And inside and out.
Notice the arrows.
Problem 1 has a red arrow.
Problem 2 has yellow arrows.
Dealing with Problem 1 first, it looks like the whole roof is sinking to the left.
It is!
What can't be seen from this photo is the siding on the left is rotting above and below the roof.
The roof decking is rotting.
But why?
See the two downspouts above the red arrow?
Together they discharge 100% of the roof's rain water … (9 comments)

siding problems: New Construction - A Roof Flashing Question - Got 'Em! - 03/09/13 08:23 PM
It sounds like some cue cards on a TV set - new construction - a roof flashing question - got 'em!
Often times on new construction the master bedroom has a gas fireplace.  And if they can make it look good, the fireplace will have a flue that exits out the side of the house.
Depending on where it's located on the side of the house, and the surrounding architecture, the flue will have its own little box and roof.
This house has one of those.
During the pre-drywall inspection the structure was done here, but the siding and roof had … (27 comments)

siding problems: On New Construction, Look Under Things! - 01/14/12 10:29 PM
Like a preposition, a home inspector's job -- on new construction, look under things!
In school I learned that a preposition is a word that describes what you can do to a building.  Over, under, inside, betwixt, beside, well you get it.
Hey, that pretty much describes a home inspector's job!
And looking around the house on new construction, even if the sod isn't laid yet, you have to be like a yardbird and look over, under, sideways, and down.
Here is an innocuous looking chimney housing the gas fireplace equipment and flue.
Looks fine to me.
The siding is tight.  … (28 comments)

siding problems: Loosey Goosey - 08/10/11 11:21 PM
From a certain angle things can look good!  As with most things, it pays to view things from different points of view.
All of the service boxes are located together.  This is great!  It makes things convenient.
The AC compressor is right in front, so if you had to work on them a bit of leaning is needed.  But it is not that close, and the boxes are all accessible.
But don't be deceived!
One of these boxes is loosey goosey.
Can you see it from this angle?
The electric meter is very loosely attached to the wall.
This is never … (23 comments)

siding problems: This Is A Holey Post (I Said "Holey", not "Holy") - 11/21/10 12:30 AM
Water is THE killer of houses, inside and out.  The outside of the house comes with an exterior "skin," which is supposed to keep that water OUT of the house.  That skin develops in different forms, shapes and materials, and all combine, ostensibly, to keep the water out.

These are two of four such "skin" features on this new construction.  You have seen this house before!  AND these are two of four similar features, each with EXACTLY the same problem!
Can you see the problem?  Look closely and where that … (29 comments)
