toilet installation: Biff, "Should We Screw It Or Glue It?" Boff, "Aw, ... - 06/08/13 08:42 PM
I love looking in a bathroom, seeing a creative toilet installation, and imagining the contractor's conversation - Biff, "Should we screw it or glue it?" Boff, "Aw, screw it.  Just glue it!"
When you go into a bathroom adorned with new vinyl flooring, and see the toilet set up on shims, with the cap stuck up with a really long screw and the toilet wobbles dramatically, you know you are dealing with creativity!
There's simply no other word for it.
Imagine people using this toilet for a while!
In no time it will be cracked, or leaking, or whatever.

toilet installation: How It Is That A Newly-Installed Toilet Can Wobble - 04/11/13 07:52 PM
Home inspection after home inspection I wonder how it is that a newly-installed toilet can wobble.
Reading the verbose and full-of-flair features list, it mentions new toilets throughout.
And going into the powder room I noticed that the toilet wobbles pretty dramatically.
Toilets wobble because their support has worked loose or because the flange is not properly seated.
Toilet installation is simple, but it HAS to be done right.
It's a bit of hip bone to the thigh bone to the knee bone kind of thing.
The toilet base has a hole which is fitted with a wax ring - "donut" … (20 comments)

toilet installation: Gluing Down Toilets To Make Sure They NEVER Move! - 02/06/13 06:55 PM
You have to love consistency and you have to admire somebody who loves his job so much he wants permanence in what he does!  And this consistent, permanent fellow likes gluing down toilets to make sure they NEVER move!
In fact, the buyer and I were admiring one of these when the wife of the duo, who actually found the house and wrote a contract without his husband seeing it, screamed about an oddity she had just found!
Certainly these are glued down so well that those silly, extraneous bolt things are absolutely not necessary!
Flanges - don't need them!  Bolts … (61 comments)

toilet installation: Tipping The Toilet - 04/08/12 07:32 PM
I know it sounds alliterative, but on a home inspection one of the tests I do is tipping the toilet.
It is important that a toilet be secured properly to the floor and that the tank secured to the bowl.
Especially important, when I see new flooring, I want to know if the flange, which seats and anchors the toilet to the floor, is still in place and the toilet is bolted to it.
This bathroom has a new vinyl floor.  I could see that the bolt under the one cap is very loose.
Difficult to see perhaps is the huge … (56 comments)

toilet installation: Go Sit In The Corner, And Think About What You Have Done - 04/03/11 12:25 AM
As a child I spent a lot of time in the corner.  That is not surprising to most who know me.  Not a bad kid, I pulled a lot of pranks and was pretty sarcastic, talking back a lot.  In those days that was unacceptable.  It got me into trouble!  And I was sent to "the corner" a lot.
My corner was beside the piano in my grandmother's "parlor."  Different from the living room, it was the less visited room, quiet, and perfect for punishment.  In the corner I was supposed to sit on my little chair and "think" about what … (27 comments)
