real estate: Delta's Carbon Offest Program - 04/19/07 11:13 AM
Delta Air Lines recently began a voluntary program to offset their carbon emissions. Their plan is to encourage ticket-buyers to make a donation to The Conservation Fund so more trees can be planted.

Delta is promising that 100% of the donations to Delta's Force for Global Good will be given to the fund.

To me, it seem like a good effort. What do you think?

I’ve been searching the web for sites that will be helpful to my clients who are interested in energy efficiency. Here are a few of my favorite links for your entertainment and edification:
Save money energy by using a tankless water heater or on-demand water heaters.

Compare tankless heaters and read some interesting articles.

Learn about building energy-efficient homes.

This is a really cool way to find out how much you could save on a new refrigerator – you must know the model number of your old fridge … (4 comments)

real estate: Environmentally Friendly Real Estate - 04/09/07 08:28 AM

A recent encounter with a client helped to drive home the fact that much has changed since the 70’s.
This young man has a good education from a top-notch school and a good job with a growing company. Each home that we looked at was examined for site orientation, but that was all! It turns out that his father had built a “passive solar” home many years ago and so, now, southern exposure was important to him.
He decided which of the many homes he looked at would be HIS first home, and at the walk-through we had a few … (6 comments)

real estate: Fluorescent Bulbs and Tankless Heaters - 03/26/07 12:32 PM
janeAnne’s blog, 10+ Simple Retrofits for Older Homes , inspired me to write a little about adding energy efficient features to older homes.
Yes, as janeAnne mentioned, I do have the ancient fluorescent bulb. It’s a “60 watt” screw-in version and works as well today as it did 13 years ago. When we moved  18 months ago a couple other bulbs the same age were left behind. It joins about 12 newer bulbs, both “60 watt” and “100 watt.” I use them wherever I can. My children recently had a laugh at my expense when I installed a new dining … (4 comments)

real estate: All in all, it was a great day! - 01/31/07 01:40 PM
A few months ago, my daughter's boyfriend said he would like to buy a house. The town that he was considering moving to is about 45 min from our house. After some discussion I found that he wanted to move there so he would be able to attend a college  that is located another 45 minutes beyond that town, and still be close to his family and his girlfriend.

real estate: “I Don’t Need a Real Estate Agent” and Other Silly Things Buyers Say - 01/23/07 11:40 AM
#1
“I don’t need a real estate agent who’s going to cost me a bunch of money”
The truth is, not having an agent when you buy a home will probably cost you money. There are some small fees that you will pay even if you don’t have an agent, but you won’t pay any more than that if you DO have an agent. In most all real estate transactions, the agents on both sides are paid by the seller.

That was OK back when gas was 32 cents a gallon, … (1 comments)
