la crosse wi: Start snickering now, you smart snow belt agents - 02/02/16 01:28 AM
Ok, you smart California, Texas and Florida agents.  You can start laughing at me now.  In La Crosse, we are expecting about 8 - 10 inches of snow today.  I think we will hit the 10 inch mark at least if it keeps snowing like this all day.
The little black flecks in the picture?  That's the snow falling.  I can't see down the block right now.
I need a beach.  Right now.  If I can get out of my driveway.  Sigh.

la crosse wi: 1st Step in home buying or, Do I REALLY have to do that? - 01/23/16 09:58 AM

In the last blog post, I outlined the steps for buying a home in La Crosse Wisconsin area (buying a home in La Crosse, Kansas might be a different proposition entirely!).  Today, I'll expand on step number 1 - Go to a mortgage lender (or 3) to find out how much you are comfortable spending monthly for your new home and to check out their fees.
You may ask "Joan, why should I do that?  I know how much I spend now.  I can just look at a mortgage calculator online and get that information!"  Well, yes and no.  There are components … (8 comments)

la crosse wi: La Crosse Winter Rec Fest 2016 - 01/14/16 06:53 AM

The La Crosse Winter Rec Fest starts Friday January 15th.  This community event was started by the La Crosse Parks and Rec department as a way to encourage people to get out, have fun and get exercise during the winter, instead of just hibernating.
The Rec Fest Medallion hunt started yesterday with clues that are given out every day until the medallion that was hidden in the city somewhere is found.
Many competitions and activities are scheduled, from the traditional winter activities of snowshoeing, curling contests, ice fishing competitions, ice skating exhibitions, hockey jamborees to non winter sports of outdoor volleyball, broom ball, kickball … (6 comments)

la crosse wi: This is our La Crosse County Landfill - 01/06/16 12:18 PM

Believe it or not, this is our La Crosse County landfill.  The County Solid Waste department works hard on recycling the waste that is brought in.  The methane generated gets used by a clinic nearby to fuel their campus.  Asphalt shingles get chopped up and sold to an local asphalt company for their use in highway construction.  Our local power plant is a garbage burning plant, so as much of the garbage as can be used is sent there, along with any clean wood waste.  Household cleaners, paints and pesticides are collected with the purpose of being given to others for … (4 comments)

la crosse wi: La Crosse Public Library - A community treasure - 01/04/16 12:12 PM

Feeling bored?  Kids wanting something to do?  Got the winter blues?  Go to the library!

We are blessed to have here in La Crosse to have 3 branches of the library.  The library is great, not only because of the stacks and  stacks of books to read, but it has tons of programs available for residents.  From toddler programs, story times, arts and crafts programs for kids to seniors, and computer training programs.  They even have specialty programs where you can learn to make costumes for science fiction conventions.  Not only can you borrow books, you can borrow Legos.

I can't forget movie … (0 comments)

la crosse wi: Dog Parks in the La Crosse Area - 01/02/16 01:05 AM

There are 3 dog parks in the La Crosse area.  Each have advantages and disadvantages.
Houska Park - On the Mississippi River
Houska Park dog park is a spacious area to let your dog play.  The main fenced in area is about 5 acres and has water and play pools for the dogs and plenty of picnic tables for the humans.  People bring tennis balls and leave them for others to play with.  It is about half dirt and half grass.  Last year, the park department added a smaller fenced area targeted for small dogs to play with small dogs.  I like this … (5 comments)

la crosse wi: New Years Eve Festivities in La Crosse WI - 12/31/15 03:59 AM

A New Years Eve Tradition in La Crosse, Wisconsin is the fireworks shot off from Grandad's Bluff.  Here is a little  history from the Skyrockers website.

"The Skyrockers are a non-profit, 100% volunteer organization that performs fireworks and pyrotechnic special effects (SPFX) as a community service in the La Crosse, Wisconsin USA area. Our group has a history going back to the 19th century when we were known informally as the “Fireworks Committee” for many of the Independence Day and New Year’s Eve celebrations in the City.
The group was named the “Grandad Sky Rockers” in 1929 only a few months after the market … (0 comments)
