carlsbad: Thankful for Living in Carlsbad - 11/30/23 05:29 PM
Grateful to Live in Carlsbad

This is my 4th entry for the November Gratitude Challenge hosted by Debe Maxwell, CRS.

We moved to Carlsbad in April 2005 from Boston, and I am very thankful that we did.

It was a tough decision to leave the Boston area after living there for 20+ years in multiple homes and communities. We loved the Boston area, other than the winter cold, snow and ice, and left behind lots of friends and family in New England and the northeast. Photo is from the winter before we moved, in Harvard Square (Cambridge) near where we last lived before relocating.

carlsbad: The Great Kindness Challenge 2018 in Carlsbad and Beyond - 01/22/18 05:12 PM
The Great Kindness Challenge 2018

It's time again for the GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE at Hope Elementary School (Calavera Hills, near where I live) and thousands of schools around the country, as well as in 91 other countries.

Being kind is a pretty good idea anytime for all of us, isn't it?

This year’s Great Kindness Challenge started today and runs all week through January 26th.

Did you know that the Great Kindness Challenge actually started here in Carlsbad?

Carlsbad resident Jill McManigal, co-founder and Executive Director of the non-profit, Kids for Peace, started the Challenge with her 2 kids. Her program was brought to 3 schools … (9 comments)

carlsbad: Speechless Sunday: What are You Looking At?! - 02/05/17 03:47 PM
I was out in our front yard recently and heard a bird song that I didn't recognize.

I finally figured it out that the song was coming from this bird - I believe it's a bluebird - perched at the very top of this cypress tree in our neighbor's front yard. I was able to grab my camera and snap a few shots before it flew off. Haven't seen it since.

carlsbad: The Carlsbad View of Snow - 12/27/16 11:56 AM
A Carlsbad View of Snow

Winter has come to Southern California, which means I can see snow on a number of distant mountains. And I like that just fine.

After all I left New England for Carlsbad to get away from the snow, but seeing it on these mountains that are quite some distance away suits me just fine. If I want to enjoy it in person I can get there in a couple of hours. But for those Carlsbadians who like to ski and snowboard, it's a treat to have it relatively close. You can hit the surf in the morning and … (29 comments)

carlsbad: Kindness Meters in Carlsbad – Kindness Matters - 10/19/16 01:06 AM
Kindness Meters in Carlsbad – Kindness Matters

It started with an idea about how to keep the Carlsbad sign in Carlsbad Village lit all night long but without being paid by Carlsbad taxpayers...although isn't the city supported by the taxpayers?

The end result was 2 Kindness Meters, solar-powered meters adjacent to the sign where residents or visitor can contribute a quarter (for 1 hour of light) or far more via credit card. Money will keep the sign lit during the night.

The kindness idea has spread and there are now 8 Kindness Meters in town. The meters are recognizable by a picture of Darlene … (11 comments)

carlsbad: Fall Comes to Carlsbad CA Today - 09/22/16 12:47 AM
First Day of Fall in Carlsbad

It's hard to believe but today is the first day of fall, and the Fall Equinox. It seems like summer just started and now it's come and gone.

The beaches are quieter now that many tourists have left, and the kids are back in school.

The leaves have been changing - yes, we do have fall colors here in SoCal, it's just not as dramatic as elsehwere in the country. Our temperatures haven't changed much yet, however;  in fact September and October can still offer us some pretty warm weather, and can bring us the Santa Ana winds. … (16 comments)

carlsbad: May Gray, or It Ain’t ALWAYS Sunny in Southern California - 05/27/16 04:52 AM
May Gray in Sunny Southern California

Our area is known for having fabulous weather. We tend to call it living in paradise. And while we do have sun much of the time, if you look at some of the surveys we are NOT the area in the country with the most sunny days.

If you have ever seen Steve Martin in LA Story, you’ll probably recall his role as the wacky meteorologist Harris Telemacher where the weather report, day after day, was sunny. Just a little California humor. Not always the case.

Those who live here in San Diego are in the know, but … (38 comments)

If you need something fun to do the first weekend in May, then this popular arts and crafts fair may be just for you.

San Diego County’s largest street fair, the Carlsbad Village Faire, will take place Sunday, May 1, in downtown Carlsbad Village by the Sea.

The Carlsbad Village Faire, the 43rd this year, is reportedly the nation’s largest 1-day outdoor street fair. As always, the fair will be held along Grand Avenue and will spill over onto adjacent streets including State Street in the heart of the Village.

The Carlsbad Village Faire, one of two each … (20 comments)

carlsbad: Men’s Journal Ranks Carlsbad in Top Ten Places to Live in 2016 - 03/31/16 04:15 AM
Carlsbad in Top Ten Places to Live in 2016 According to Men's Journal

Carlsbad is ranked one of the top ten places to live in the US for 2016 by Men’s Journal, describing it as a “coastal resort city that is an athlete’s playground.”

Runners in the Carlsbad Marathon

There are a host of reasons why this is so, and if you spend any time here, or live here like I do, it becomes pretty obvious.

Great weather allows outdoor activities year-round – biking, hiking, surfing, golf and so much more. Plenty of people ride bikes to work, and you see lots of runners and … (10 comments)

carlsbad: How Active is the Carlsbad Real Estate Market – Numbers Tell the Story - 03/23/16 08:29 AM
Carlsbad Homes Sales Update March 2016
The Numbers Tell Us How Busy It Is

Carlsbad is a busy housing market, as any current buyer will tell you.

Inventory is limited, and homes in general are selling quickly, often with multiple offers.

We have been in a seller’s market for many months, with inventory of single family detached homes under 3 months, and now just a little over 2 months based on the statistics for February 2016. So what do the numbers tell us about how busy the market is in Carlsbad currently?

MARCH 2016
We’ve had 72 new single family detached homes listed since March 1 … (13 comments)

carlsbad: The Look of Tuscany in Carlsbad - 03/12/16 11:00 AM
Some Things in Carlsbad Remind me of Tuscany

Ok, so it's not Tuscany, but there are times the views from our house in Carlsbad remind us of a wonderful stay in Tuscany last fall in Montignana, 45 minutes from Florence.

We've had a fair amount of ground fog in the mornings recently. With the green canyon outside our house and Mediterranean-style homes nearby, we immediately thought of the beautiful views from the condo we stayed in with wonderful views of the Chianti countryside from the patio (see below).

Our views at home are not quite so spectacular as this view in Tuscany but they … (10 comments)

carlsbad: Daylight Savings Time Could End in California - 02/28/16 11:26 PM
Daylight Savings Time Could End in California

A bill being considered in California could end Daylight Savings Time.

Assembly Bill 2496, if approved, would end the practice of springing ahead and falling back which was approved by California voters back in 1949.

There are other states that have been considering similar legislation, including Alaska, Washington, Florida, Idaho and Oregon. Right now only 2 states don’t observe the practice of DST – Arizona and Hawaii.

Those opposed to continuing the practice of Daylight Savings Times can sign and send a from letter to congress on this website.

Stay tuned!

And guess what? You don’t have to be cold or wear mittens and heavy coats to enjoy our winter in Carlsbad AND to go ice skating!

The Carlsbad Winter Festival will offer a 40’ x 80’ “ice” skating rink (no cold ice but plastic polymer! Wonder if … (16 comments)
