carlsbad beaches: Reasons to Love Living in Carlsbad CA – The Beaches - 09/26/23 08:03 PM
Reasons to Love Living in Carlsbad CA
~ Beaches ~

There are plenty of reasons to love living in, or visiting, Carlsbad CA. That includes our beaches, the arts, dining, shopping, recreational opportunities, tourist stuff, housing, sports and our weather.

In this article the focus is on the Carlsbad beaches.

Carlsbad has about 7 miles of beach, from the Oceanside border at Point Malo and the mouth of the Buena Vista Lagoon to the north, and south along the Coast Road/Historic Route 101 to the Leucadia area of Encinitas.

There are lots of different beaches by name (e.g., Terramar, Warm Waters, Hole in the Fence, South … (19 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Grateful for our Carlsbad Beaches - 11/29/22 01:24 PM
I’m so Thankful for our Beaches

The November 2022 Gratitude Challenge has all been about being thankful. We’ve had the entire month to share up to 4 posts about what we are grateful for, which no doubt is pretty easy to do.  It’s been fun to participate, but even better to read so many wonderful posts about gratitude and being thankful!

For my last post, I wanted to share my gratitude for our Carlsbad beaches. I am thankful in so many ways! I have spent the majority of my life near beaches, or within an hour or so, on both the east … (14 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Carlsbad Seagulls Need Fresh Water, Too! - 10/09/22 08:05 PM
Carlsbad Seagulls
\We spent an hour at the beach today on a rather cloudy, gray day, but it was still beautiful . How can time at the beach not be enjoyable?!
Carlsbad is such a thoughtful city, providing drinking fountains along the concrete boardwalk for those in need.
That includes the seagulls, who also enjoy a drink of fresh water now and then, too.

carlsbad beaches: A Picture-Perfect Day at the Beach in Carlsbad - 02/07/22 10:11 AM
Yesterday was a picture-perfect day at the beach.  So we decided to take a picnic lunch and sit on the bluff at a favorite spot to enjoy the views and just relax.

I can't complain about 70 degrees at the beach in February, and this week is supposed to be sunny and warm (up to 75 or so) every day. A far cry from what we used to experience in February in New England.

It seemed like everyone was out yesterday - not a surprise - and parking was a challenge. We were hoping to see some whales that tend to migrate at … (26 comments)

carlsbad beaches: I’m Thankful for our Carlsbad Beaches - 11/21/21 07:59 PM
I’m Grateful for Carlsbad Beaches

I’ve spent much of my life near ocean beaches, and it would be hard to be far away from them. I don’t necessarily want to live right on the beach for a host of reasons but the lifestyle nearby is something I am grateful for.

Carlsbad has around 7 miles of beaches for us to enjoy, year-round because of our temperate weather. I appreciate them all and the lifestyle they afford. And with the crowds we see clearly many others enjoy them as well.

I really appreciate the accessibility to the Carlsbad beaches. Other than pay lots at … (27 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Summer Returns to Carlsbad October 20, 2019 - 10/22/19 02:33 PM
Summer Returns to Carlsbad October 20, 2019

You might think the title a bit odd, but it's true...at least in terms of summer weather being back in Carlsbad.

It was 84 both yesterday and again today, and significantly hotter inland, and absolutely gorgeous days to be at the beach. Indeed, many were yesterday when I was out taking some photos and running errands, and as in the summer months the parking was pretty limited. Despite that there were plenty of areas on the beach without a soul in sight!

Those of you who have already experienced cold weather, frost, or even snow might think … (16 comments)

carlsbad beaches: I was Out in Carlsbad Memorial Weekend and So Was Everyone Else - 05/27/18 08:25 AM
I had some errands to run in Carlsbad Village late yesterday afternoon, mostly personal stuff, and it was immediately obvious that the holiday crowds were out and about as we head into the summer season. And it was great weather for a 2-mile walk along the beach.

The beach was more crowded, even on a chilly, breezy but sunny day, than I've seen it since last summer.

The life guard trucks and life guard stations were back in position on the beaches and porta-potties were placed strategically to handle the crowds.

And the volley ball players were out.

Traffic was heavier and the parking … (20 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Stone Sculpture at the Beach in Carlsbad - First Day of 2018 - 01/01/18 12:09 PM
Stone Sculpture at the Beach in Carlsbad

Artistry can show its face in many ways, and in interesting places, sometimes when least expected.

We took a long walk along the beach on the boardwalk in Carlsbad this morning to start off the new year. There were lots of people out, many with dogs, enjoying our beautiful weather...a balmy 58 degrees and partially sunny!!

Along the path we came across this gentleman who was creating some stone sculptures. This cluster of 3 was done, but he was still workingon another so I left him alone. No doubt they will be there for a few days, … (12 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Last Day of Fall at Terramar Beach in Carlsbad - 12/29/17 03:35 PM
Terramar Beach Walk  - Last Day of Fall in Carlsbad

I was out looking at property and running errands on the last day of fall in Carlsbad. It was an absolutely gorgeous fall day, in the high 60s, and I decided to take a few minutes for myself and enjoy a short walk at Terramar Beach. And it was the perfect day for a few photos!

This has become my favorite beach for a number of reasons; my younger daughter got married here 5 years ago, but it's also a particularly beautiful, and rather private, beach pretty much year-round. It's always changing, due … (23 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Stuffed French Toast and a Morning Beach Walk in Carlsbad - 09/23/17 01:19 PM
Stuffed French Toast and a Beach Walk in Carlsbad

It was a gorgeous fall morning, and Cafe Elysa's coconut custard stuffed French Toast was calling my name.  There was nothing at home that appealed to me, and while I was originally going to the French Bakery Cafe for a croissant, my stomach and taste buds won out. Plus I needed that extra energy for the 2 1/2 mile beach walk I planned to take afterwards from the Village almost to the power plant and back.

I could have opted for yoga on the beach (they were perilously close to the incoming tide, I … (18 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Photography Contest - Real Life Places - 11/21/16 07:50 AM
Photography Contest - Real Life Places

Dick Greenberg has inspired us to share our best photos for his November 2016 Photography Contest.

This is my entry for the Real Life category in the travel/places subcategory.

Terramar Beach is one of the more beautiful beaches in Carlsbad where I live. Indeed it ranks right up for the many beaches I've been to in Southern California.

In addition to the beauty of this beach with the spectacular cliffs, it holds a special meaning for my wife and I as it's where our younger daughter got married about 3 years ago. It was a small wedding, with about … (25 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Wordless Wednesday: A Stone Sculpture Exhibit in Carlsbad - 09/28/16 05:40 AM
Stone Sculptures in Carlsbad

I wrote a post back in May about creating your own rock sculptures in Carlsbad. These artistic endeavors have been common at Cardiff State Beach but I hadn't seen any until a few months ago in Carlsbad. At the time I stopped by for some photos while out walking.

But since that time clearly many more beach-goers have gotten inspired as there is now quite an exhibit of rock scultpures in place (well more than 20). Perhaps some folks even saw my post!

I didn't have time to add my own but might just have to do that. It's nice to see that … (35 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Summertime in Carlsbad with Beach Fun for Everyone - 06/27/16 07:11 AM
Beach Fun for Everyone in the Carlsbad Summertime

There is so much to enjoy about being in Carlsbad in the summertime, whether you live here or are just visiting. It’s impossible to pick one favorite thing, given the diversity of recreation, dining, shopping, and so much more.

It goes without saying the 7 miles of Carlsbad beaches at the edge of the continent are a popular draw for Carlsbadians and visitors alike, but especially so in the summer months. While you might think the beach is only good for sitting around, baking in the sun, and staring at the ocean, while that’s ONE … (24 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Carlsbad Village Lifestyle – Whales, Dolphins, Seagulls & Pelicans - 02/16/16 07:02 AM
Carlsbad Village Lifestyle
Whales, Dolphins, Seagulls and Pelicans
Free Entertainment on the Beach

The Carlsbad Village beach is the northern-most beach of our 7 miles of coastline, and the crowds were out on Presidents’ Day to enjoy our gorgeous weather!

We’ve been enjoying spectacular weather for the last week, more spring and summer-like than normal, and the long weekend meant long hours at the beaches for lots of Carlsbad residents.

The beaches, of course, are a big draw for those of us living in Carlsbad and any time we can spend some quality time is a blessing, and when the weather is particular nice you … (20 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Terramar Beach in Carlsbad in Late Fall - 12/17/15 01:41 AM
Terramar Beach in Carlsbad in Late Fall

The beaches in Carlsbad are beautiful at any time of the year, IMO.

Terramar Beach in central Carlsbad just south of the power plant is a particularly beautiful, and somewhat remote beach. It's particularly nice at this time of year, even though it can get pretty chilly, since there often is no one there.

The bluffs are the most dramatic along our Carlsbad coast and great for photos. And some of the most expensive Carlsbad real estate sits atop the bluff to the north.

I was there the other day to see what the beach looked like given … (0 comments)

carlsbad beaches: At the Edge of the Continent on a Summer's Day in Carlsbad CA - 07/10/15 09:38 AM
At the Edge of the Continent on a Summer's Day in Carlsbad CA

I was out running errands and took the coast road north to the Village to stop for dinner at our favorite fish market. The drive along the coast was spectatular today, with great ocean breezes, temps in the mid 70s and not a cloud to be soon (other than inland).

I stopped by Terramar Beach to snap a few photos of this very striking coastline in Carlsbad.

I always marvel at the beauty at this western edge of the continent. Imagine living here!!

carlsbad beaches: Beach Sand Replenishing in Carlsbad California 2015 - 03/29/15 02:23 AM

Beach Sand Replenishing in Carlsbad California 2015

Despite humankind’s best efforts, Mother Nature, the ocean, and the tides tend to do what they want to do. That means shifting sands on the Carlsbad beaches.

Replenishing the sand on the Carlsbad beaches is a regular project taken on by the City of Carlsbad in conjunction with Cabrillo Power 1 LLC, owner of the nearby Agua Hedionda lagoon.

The current replenishment project in north Carlsbad began in November of 2014 and part of the regular dredging of the nearby Agua Hedionda Lagoon by the Encina … (11 comments)

carlsbad beaches: Carlsbad State Beach Named to List of Top 25 Beaches in the US - 02/19/15 07:53 AM

Carlsbad State Beach Named to List of Top 25 Beaches in the US

Carlsbad State Beach in Carlsbad was just named on the 2015 list of America’s 25 favorites in a poll by TripAdvisor.

You can read my recent article about things to do at the beach in Carlsbad!

I’m not surprised, as it’s a favorite of mine, and joins a list of other beaches I know well – La Jolla Cove in La Jolla, CA; Ogunquit Beach in Ogunquit ME (spent many summers there); Race Point Beach in Provincetown, CA (at the … (14 comments)

carlsbad beaches: A Picture Perfect Day in Carlsbad - 01/30/15 12:03 AM

A Picture Perfect Day in Carlsbad

No, it’s not today, nor was it yesterday.

But it was a picture perfect day last Saturday in Carlsbad. In the mid 70s and not a cloud in the sky. Pretty wonderful for a late January winter day. It felt almost like summer. No wonder so many want to live in Carlsbad.

And everyone was out enjoying it, as tends to happen when the weather is like that, especially in the winter. Traffic was heavy, beaches were crowded, the Village was busy, there was little parking along … (11 comments)

carlsbad beaches: The Carlsbad Jetties at Carlsbad State Beach - 01/21/15 12:07 PM

The Carlsbad Jetties at Carlsbad State Beach

The Carlsbad Jetties are an iconic landmark, a short hop off the Coast Road/Route 101, on Carlsbad State Beach south of Carlsbad Village and Tamarack Avenue. There are actually 2 sets of jetties along the beach.

Two jetties serve as the mouth of the Agua Hedionda lagoon as it flows into and out of the ocean, an interesting place to watch the waves and the tide moving in and out.

The Carlsbad jetties are a great landmark – you’ll hear people telling others to meet us on the beach … (7 comments)
