farmers markets: Mega Squash at the Vista Farmers Market - 09/17/16 06:02 AM
Mega Squash

As has become a regular habit, we stopped at the Vista Farmers Market for breakfast and then stocking up with fruits and vegetables for the week. There is always a wide selection of offerings but you do have to watch since prices can vary widely for the same product.

There was a hill of green beans on display, at $4/lb., but 2 other nearby displays, one at $3/lb. and one at $2.50. We came past the hill of beans (it was easily 18" high) and it looked the same. Wonder why?!

One stand was offering these mega squash. Some of these … (25 comments)

farmers markets: Wordless Wednesday: Buddha's Hand for Sale - 09/07/16 01:57 AM
Buddha's Hand for Sale

The Temescal Farmers Market in Oakland was a fun place to visit on Saturdays, with some interesting produce, and people, and a guarantee you'd find something tasty to eat. We used to go with our daughter and her family when they lived there every time we got the chance on our visits.

This Buddha's Hand was particularly intriguing. I had no clue what it was when I first saw it but it was certainly photo-worthy. Buddha's Hand is actually a type of citron, not a lemon.

farmers markets: Contrasts at the Vista Farmers Market - 08/20/16 04:19 AM
Contrasts at the Farmers Market

The Vista Farmers market, held every Saturday morning at the Courthouse Complex parking lot, is one of the best in my area, and a feast for the eyes and stomach.

We often go Saturday mornings after having coffee to enjoy breakfast and do the shopping for fresh produce, plants, flowers or whatever else appeals to us.

The contrasts in colors, shapes and size are always intriguing as are the names of some of the fruits and veggies. Today we bought a mix of microgreens for salads (the spicy blend, with arugula and radish plus other stuff I can't recall, from … (20 comments)

farmers markets: Have You Ever Had a Donut Peach? Vista Farmers Market Find - 06/11/16 08:31 AM
Vista Farmers Market Donut Peaches

and Other Finds

We went to the Vista Farmers Market this morning for breakfast and for some fresh fruits and vegetables.

I noticed these donut peaches, which, in doing some research, I learned are a natural genetic mutation which causes them to be flat and resemble donuts. No, they don't taste like that at all.

As always there was a wide array of fruits, vegetables (we bought some wonderfil heirloom tomatoes for salads), flowers and a host of foods and places to eat (Mexican, Polish perogi, French, Italian, Brazilian, West African), rather a mini mall which included all sorts … (34 comments)

farmers markets: Carlsbad Farmers’ Market Gets Ready for Spring - 03/08/14 04:21 AM

Carlsbad Farmers’ Market Gets Ready for Spring
The Carlsbad Farmers’ Market is getting ready for spring, which as you may remember starts in just 2 more weeks on Thursday March 20.
Now held only on Wednesdays on State Street in the heart of the Village (instead of the former location on Wednesdays and Saturdays where it moved from in June 2013), the current hours for the Carlsbad Farmers’ Market of 3 – 6 pm will be expanded after Daylight Saving Time begins (yes that starts tomorrow, remember? Spring Ahead = lose 1 hour of sleep).

New hours … (6 comments)

farmers markets: Father’s Day Mega-Lettuce - 06/17/12 01:20 PM
Father’s Day Mega-Lettuce
Bet THAT title got you!

We spent a rare few free hours today in Solana Beach in the Cedros Design District, starting with a late lunch as a favorite place, the Wild Note Café (attached to the famed Belly-Up) followed by a stroll around this area which caters to those who are seeking furnishings for a home and/or are remodeling inside and out. Lots of galleries and clothing stores, too…all in all a VERY cool place to spend a few hours.

The Farmer’s Market in Solana Beach is one of the best I … (10 comments)

farmers markets: Carlsbad Farmers Market in Carlsbad Village, Carlsbad CA - 07/03/10 11:22 AM
A Visit to the Carlsbad Farmers Market in Carlsbad Village The Carlsbad Farmers Market in Carlsbad Village is a terrific place to visit for fresh produce, flowers and food.
We stopped in today to buy much of what we needed for the small dinner party we are having tonight, and we were not disappointed with the selection - getting there when they first open works best.
The Carlsbad Farmers Market is smaller than some other towns but offers a pretty good selection from local growers, along with other vendors - honey, seafood, fudge, tamales, and more.
One advantage is that they are … (26 comments)
